RESPONDUS 4.0 2 OF 13 Installing Respondus You can download Respondus 4.0 for free from the UIC webstore. Respondus is only compatible with Windows. 1. Open the Webstore Go to the UIC webstore at webstore.illinois.edu Click on Personal Purchases or Unit Purchases 2. Log into UIC Shibboleth Click Login link on the left hand menu Enter your user information to log in 3. Search for Respondus Type Respondus into the Product Search field Click Go

Accept End User License Agreement Please read and accept the EULA to properly use the Respondus software under UIC s license. Click I agree to continue 6. Complete Checkout Click the Checkout button to continue 7. Download Respondus Click the download icon to download Respondus 8. Note Important Information Take note of this information which you will paste exactly into Respondus during installation Note: Be careful of spaces before or after the text when you copy and paste this information.

Install Respondus Click the downloaded file to install Respondus Click Run and then advance through the prompts by clicking Next Finally, click Finish to complete the installation 10. RESPONDUS 4.0 5 OF 13 Creating Tests in Respondus You can use Respondus to create exams and surveys with many question types to assess your students. Edit Overview When you click on the Edit tab, you will see a list of questions and a place to add new questions. There are multiple options to create the perfect questions for your course, as well as customizable funtions that allow you maximal control over each question. Below is an overview of the editing interface. The following pages contain basic steps to create questions and get you started. A AB F C D G E A. Copy from another file Copy questions from another Respondus file D. Test Bank Network Copy questions from a previously registered publisher test bank to this Respondus file E. Question List Lists the questions in the file Use the drop-down context menu to edit a question F. Question Template The question template allows you to enter question wording and content G. Preview Displays the question as it will appear to students in an online assessment
CREATING TESTS IN RESPONDUS 6 OF 13 1. Choose Blackboard LMS From the Start tab, choose the correct Learning Management System Personality Choose Blackboard 7.x - 9.x 2. Create a new test Click Create to create a new test 3. Name the test Type in the name of the test Choose between Exam or Survey: Surveys are like Exams however surveys do not contain correct answers, assign point values, or give feedback Click OK 4. Create questions From the Edit tab, click a question type from the left hand menu, and fill out the various fields. 1. Title the question to easily identify it 2. Type out the question in Question Wording 3. Enter answers 4. Select the correct answer 5. Assign point value 6. Click Insert to add question to Question List

RESPONDUS 4.0 8 OF 13 Formatting Guide for Import to Respondus Questions created in plain text, rich text, or MS Word can be imported into Respondus using the formatting below. 1. Format Questions for Import Basic Formatting syntax Fill in the title (optional) Fill in the number of points. You can use decimals. (optional) Each question requires a number, followed by a parentheses and then the question text Add feedback to correct answers with a ~ followed by your text A @ will provide feedback for wrong answers Example 1: Multiple Choice formatting Title: Insert title here Points: # #) Who determined the exact speed of light? ~ Correct answer feedback @ Incorrect answer feedback Each answer requires a letter from a up to t, followed by a parentheses. Mark the correct answers with *. a) Albert Einstein b) Albert Michelson *c) Thomas Edison 2. Format True/False Questions Formatting syntax Each question needs the answers True and False. True must be the first answer to import properly. Mark the correct answer with *. Example 2: True/False formatting *a) True b) False 3. Format Essay Questions Formatting syntax The first line must read Type: E There can only be one answer, a) and it should be followed by any required text. Do not mark the answer with *. RESPONDUS 4.0 9 OF 13 Importing Tests from Word to Respondus Respondus allows you to import questions from other file formats to be published to your Blackboard course. BEFORE YOU IMPORT Make sure that your file is in one of the following file formats: 0 MS Word, Plain Text, Rich Text, or CSV Check that your questions are written in the Standard Format for each file type as outlined by Respondus 0 You can use the standard formatting syntax in the previous section: Formatting Guide for Import to Respondus 0 For a complete list of question types and their formats, please visit: 0 https://www.respondus.com/products/respondus/guides.shtml, and choose Blackboard Learn Personality. 1. Open the Import menu From the main menu, click Import 2. Import your file Select the file type from the dropdown menu: 0 Plain Text 0 Rich Text 0 Microsoft Word Click Browse to find and select your document Note: Respondus automatically imports embedded images when you import an MS Word file. If you are importing a different file such as.txt,.rtf, or.csv, you will have to also browse for the Image Folder where your images are located.

Choose where to add new Questions Choose to Append questions or Create a new test If you are creating a new document, choose the type of file you would like to create: 0 Exam or Survey Mark the checkbox Use stem... to create title if you would like to add a prefix to each question number. This optional feature allows you to label the question that you import. Note: All questions must have a title and will be default be numbers and part of the question wording. A stem prefix helps identify questions more easily. 4. Preview your imported file Click the Preview button to check for any errors Read any warning messages with a description of the errors. If you have incorrect formatting, an error will show up here, telling you to fix it. If there are errors, or you would like to make any changes, go back and edit your file, then proceed to Step 5 5. Complete the import Click Finish A Respondus file will be created from your import and you will be able to access it in the Edit menu
RESPONDUS 4.0 11 OF 13 Publishing in Respondus In the Preview & Publish tab of Respondus, you can Preview, Publish, and Print the exams or surveys you have created. Preview content before publishing, publish directly to Blackboard, and print directly from Respondus. 1. Preview your exam or survey Preview shows you the questions and answers as they would appread to students taking the exam. Before you publish an exam, you may want to review your questions to check for any errors. Go to the Preview & Publish tab Click the Preview the File button Review your questions in the Preview window Click Close when you done reviewing Note: This Preview window is similar to the preview window in the Edit tab. Unlike the preview option in the Edit tab, you can scroll quickly between questions with the preview option in the Preview and Publish tab. 2. Edit a question in the preview If you notice an error or need to make a change to the questions in the preview, you can edit it. Click the Modify Item button to open an edit window where you can make changes in the normal editor Click Save Changes in the edit window when you are finished editing the question 3. Publish to Blackboard Click Publish to Blackboard Then click the Publish Wizard button to begin the process to publish Respondus exams and surveys to your Blackboard site
PUBLISHING IN RESPONDUS 12 OF 13 4. Set up the Publish Wizard Select Publish to a single course Choose Add a new server from the menu Click Next 5. Connect to your Blackboard Server If you are using a computer on campus or are using a VPN, you might see a window stating there are preconfigured settings for UIC Click Yes, check for preconfigured server settings Click Next You must have an active Blackboard login. 6. Enter your Blackboard information Type in a name for the server, ex. My Bb Courses Enter your UIC netid and password Check Save my UserName and Password if you are using a private computer and would like to skip this step in the future Select Run connection test Click Next 7. Confirm Connection Test View the status window: If your connection test completed successfully, click Next and then Finish If your connection test indicates an error, doublecheck your login information and that you are using the latest version of Respondus

Choose Course and Exam to Publish Choose a Course to publish to from the dropdown menu - Respondus should automatically list the courses in which you are an instructor and display them here Choose whether you want to Create or Replace an Exam/Survey or Pool Check any desired options Click Next 9. Select Content Area to Publish to Choose the content area folder where you would like to publish the exam/survey 0 You can expand content area folders to access any subfolders. The folders should match the folder layout in your course. 0 Note: You cannot publish anything to a content area that does not already exist. If you would like to publish to a new content area, first create the area in your Blackboard course, then return to Step 9. Click Next 10.
