DATASHEET JUNOS SPACE Product Overview Juniper Networks Junos Space is an open software platform designed for deploying and creating Juniperdeveloped, partner, and third-party applications. It consists of: A scalable runtime environment to host applications Embedded network infrastructure automation functionality A hot-pluggable, multi-tenant environment to enable applications and devices to be dynamically added and upgraded A simple Web 2.0 user interface to speed user productivity A complete rapid application development framework for developing simple and smart applications Product Description Juniper Networks Junos Space is an open, extensible network platform for developing and hosting applications that simplify network operations, scale services, automate support, and open your network to new business opportunities. The Junos Space platform is based on service-oriented architecture (SOA) and consists of multilayered network abstractions and workflows that allow users to automate network operations and increase operator efficiency. It has been architected to be an open, pluggable application platform that uses industry-standard technologies to achieve massive scale and resilience that is transparent to applications. Junos Space uses a highly innovative approach to its pluggable application environment. The design objective is to enable applications that are lightweight and can be separately managed to maximize efficiency and performance. Junos Space applications manage their own data model and interactions between applications are via public APIs. Junos Space enables programmability at the network application layer, and an application developed and hosted on the Junos Space platform can be upgraded independently. Junos Space is a multipurpose application platform designed to be simple, smart, and open: Smart the core platform provides network abstractions and automation to enable smart applications, and includes best practices to automate repetitive tasks, minimize user input, and scale services. Simple the platform interface is business-intent oriented, not technology-centric, with the system guiding the user rather than the other way around. Open the platform architecture is open and explicitly designed to enable partners, developers, independent software vendors, customers, and third parties to build and deploy smart, simple, and easy-to-use applications. 1

Customizable Application Environment: Junos Space provides a full featured development environment for fast development and monetization of network-aware applications. The Junos Space development platform provides a complete rapid application development framework that includes a common infrastructure, a software development kit (SDK) with prebuilt core services and widgets to allow easy user interface prototyping, and standardsbased APIs for third-party application integration. Using the Juniper Networks Junos Space SDK, users have the option of developing different classes of applications. These include mashups, customized business process workflows, or native applications. Figure 1: Network Activate Junos Space Environment Junos Space is underpinned by a powerful runtime environment and a programmable application environment. Scalable and Resilient Runtime Environment: Junos Space is implemented as a scalable fabric of physical or virtual appliances that work collaboratively to help you optimize network resiliency, availability, and resource utilization. You can expand or contract the fabric by simply adding or deleting nodes, and the system automatically starts applications and services on active nodes. Each node is fully utilized and the nodes work together to provide automated resource management and service availability. The Junos Space runtime platform is multi-tenant and enables hot-pluggable application deployment and upgrades. Juniper or third-party applications can be added by downloading them onto the platform, and the system automatically deploys the applications throughout the fabric, including deploying code to clients. Using the platform s Device Management Interface (DMI), you can also do hot-pluggable device additions and on device software upgrades. Figure 3: Junos Space platform Easy User Experience: Junos Space provides a Web 2.0 GUI and is designed to simplify the way you interact with the system. It is based on a task-oriented paradigm and uses persona-based workflows to help you do your administrative tasks quickly and efficiently. Embedded Network Infrastructure Automation The Junos Space platform allows for total management of your Juniper resources and assets. These include comprehensive inventory management; full configuration of devices and interfaces through device templates that allow an administrator to design configuration templates and push configuration to a device or a group of devices; configuration editing to enable users to edit, add, or delete portions of the configuration; configuration file management to allow users to back up, restore, view, and edit the configuration file for devices under management; and automated management and deployment of software images. These platform functions are embedded within the core platform. In conjunction with multiple add-on applications, users can control any part of their network environment with Junos Space. Junos Space supports a full portfolio of applications developed by Juniper for automating network infrastructure and operations. These include: Figure 2: Junos Space applications Junos Space Network Activate for rapid service scaling Automated management of MPLS resources Point-and-click interface for rapid Ethernet/MPLS service creation and provisioning Out-of-box service catalog for common services 2

Ability to scan network devices for exposure to proactive bug notifications Targeted EOL/EOS notifications to minimize risk of running unsupported hardware Automated impact analysis for EOL/EOS notifications saving tens of hours Figure 4: Network Activate Junos Space QoS Design to manage and customize quality of service for Ethernet services. Centralized MPLS QoS domain discovery Customizable QoS profiler and scheduler Automated profiler validation Junos Space Route Insight to simplify network operations Network-wide IP network visualization and monitoring Real-time monitoring and alerting Full forensic event history, record/rewind, and analysis Highly accurate modeling and simulation Junos Space Ethernet Design for fast enterprise infrastructure deployment Rapid deployment of campus and data center switch and router networks End system management Switch port management Bulk application of best practice configurations Junos Space Virtual Control for unified management of physical and virtual networks Errors minimized with end-to-end visibility of the virtual and physical network infrastructure Simplified data center manageability by allowing network administrators to discover, configure, provision, and monitor virtual switches An open architecture that allows easy integration of hypervisors from leading virtualization vendors Figure 5: Route Insight Junos Space Service Now for fault monitoring and incident management Automatic fault detection and diagnostics data collection via embedded Junos OS automation capabilities Automated incident management and inventory management Automated case creation with Juniper Networks Technical Assistance Center (JTAC) Tens to hundreds of hours saved per incident in troubleshooting and diagnosis Junos Space Service Insight to target network intelligence for proactive maintenance Preemptive maintenance enabled by targeted proactive bug notifications Figure 6: Virtual Junos Control Junos Space Security Design rapid deployment of security infrastructure Enables security architects to design, validate, and deploy security policies Topology-based policy and IPsec VPN definitions Fully automated visualization and configuration of security devices Centralized configuration ready to push to thousands of devices when they connect Security domains allowing security restrictions to be applied to distributed network resources 3
