Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror to Tape User s Guide 5 Chapter 1: INTRODUCING QUEST NETVAULT BACKUP PLUG-IN FOR SNAPMIRROR TO TAPE Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror To Tape At a Glance Feature Summary SM2T Backups and NDMP Dump Backups Target Audience Recommended Additional Reading About Quest Software Contacting Quest Software Quest Support 1.1.0 Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror To Tape At a Glance NetApp's SnapMirror Software provides many benefits to system administrators, including reduced backup and recovery windows, instant access to mission-critical data, and file system replication at a local or remote site. Working in conjunction with the SnapMirror technology, Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror to Tape (Plug-in for SnapMirror to Tape or Plug-in for SM2T) extends these benefits by enabling full volumes on NetApp Filers to be mirrored and backed up to tape. Tape mirror copies can be used as an alternative transport mechanism and provide long term, off-site archival storage for mirrored volumes. The plug-in's benefits are further extended when combined with the NetApp Snapshot Technology. Snapshots provide a backup function that allow user and application data stored on a Filer to be quickly and efficiently backed up with virtually no service disruption. Snapshots are stored on volumes residing on the same filer as the data being protected and provide a fast method of data recovery under normal circumstances. SnapMirror to Tape can be used to backup filer volumes containing snapshots on a periodic basis for disaster recovery purposes. In a disaster scenario where the entire filer is lost, snapshots can be recovered quickly and efficiently from the tape to ensure minimal interruption to operations.

6 Chapter 1 Introducing Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for SnapMirror To Tape 1.2.0 Feature Summary Move mirrors to tape and save disk space on NetApp Filers Relocate mirrored data to alternate NetApp Filers Centralized management of SnapMirror schedules from Quest NetVault Backup (NetVault Backup or NVBU) Console Point-in-time volume recovery from mirrors stored on tape Integrated with NVBU's NDMP related functions Disk-based backups to Quest NetVault SmartDisk (NVSD), including the ability to deduplicate data 1.3.0 SM2T Backups and NDMP Dump Backups The SM2T Backups are faster than the NDMP Dump Backups. The other differences between these two types of backups are detailed in the table below: Snap Mirror to Tape Backup Backs up blocks of data to tape Only supports Level 0 Backups Does not provide File Level Restores Capable of backing up multiple Snapshot Copies in a volume Preserves native Deduplication while backing up and restoring data NDMP Dump Backup Backs up files and directories Supports Level 0, Incremental, and Differential Backups Provides File Level Restores Capable of only backing up the base Snapshot Copy Does not preserve native Deduplication while backing up data 1.4.0 Target Audience This guide is intended for Backup Administrators and other technical personnel who are responsible for designing and implementing a backup strategy for NAS Filers. A good understanding of the NAS, NDMP and the operating systems under which the NetVault Backup Server and Clients are running is assumed. 1.5.0 Recommended Additional Reading NVBU Documentation Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for NDMP User s Guide This guide provides information on the available Data Transfer Models, and describes the procedures for installing and configuring the Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for NDMP.
