2 INSTALLATION Chapter 2 Installation 2.1 Site Selection The following are guidelines for site selection. These guidelines must be followed to ensure proper installation. If the Loop-IP 6100 EIU is to be rack mounted, location of the Rack Cage should be part of the central office equipment layout design. Considerations should be given to entrance cable routing and direct current power cable routing, if needed. The installation site should have the appropriate power feed (22 to 72 Vdc). Similar considerations should be given for mounting on a desktop. The unit is stackable, using available protective rubber feet for each unit. Relatively humidity should stay between 0 and 95%. Do not operate the unit at an altitude greater than 5000m (15,000 feet). 2.2 Mechanical Installation, Electrical Installation and Self Test 2.2.1 Mechanical Installation The Loop-IP 6100 EIU can be installed as a desk top unit or mounted in a 19 or 23-inch rack by purchasing an additional tray. 2.2.2 Electrical Installation DC power (24 to 60 Vdc) will be used. Power connection is at the front of the unit. Power is inserted via a 3- pin terminal block. Table 2-1 lists the pin definition for the power connector. Table 2-1 Power Connector Pin Definition Pin Number Signal Description 1 V DC 22 to 72 Volts 2 Ground Ground 3 NC No Connection The Ethernet port can be accessed via an Ethernet 100Base-T interface. Chapter 2 Installation 2.2.3 Installation and Self Test Instructions 1. In order to properly install your Loop-IP 6100 EIU you will need:! 75 ohm coaxial cable! Crossover 100Base-T Cat 5 Cable Note This crossover cable will be required if the pinout at the network port you are connecting to is identical to the pinout at the Loop-IP 6100 data port.! Straight 100Base-T cable 2. Prepare the Loop-IP 6100 EIU for a self-test. First connect the coaxial and crossover cables to the unit as shown in Figure 2-1 below. Do NOT connect to the DS3 or E3 network yet. Note: EIU operates in FULL duplex only. The Self Test does not indicate improper configuration of the 100Base T connection. Figure 2-1 Self Test Connections 3. Apply power to the Loop-IP 6100 EIU. It will sense that the cables are connected and will run in Self Test Mode. Compare the LEDs to the Self Test LED colors in Table 2-3. below After verifying that the LED lights show correct states, shut the power off and remove the cables. 2-2

Chapter 2 Installation Table 2-4 Self Test LED States The Loop-IP 6100 Self Test runs automatically after startup when configured as shown above. When in this configuration, PROPER FUNCTION is indicated by the following LED states. LED NAME COLOR 1 PWR Green 2 TRIB Green 3 TEST Link Green 4 TEST Activity Yellow 5 DATA Link Green 6 DATA Activity Yellow Any other LED states indicate unit failure and the unit should be returned for repair. 4. Install the unit in the shelf (either single or dual rack mount) if rack mounting. Use a minimum of 14 gauge wire (1.5 mm) and suitable ground lugs to terminate ground between the IP 6100 ground post and a nearby grounding point. Verify the ground continuity with an ohmeter. 5. Install the coaxial cables between the unit and the DS3 or E3 network. 6. Use a proper Ethernet 100Base-T cable to connect the unit s RJ45 Data Port to your network equipment. 7. Apply power to the unit. 2-3

3 OPERATION Chapter 3 Operation This chapter describes the Loop-IP 6100 operational functions. 3.1 Starting the Loop-IP 6100 EIU After properly completing the installation process, apply power (22 to 72 Vdc) to the Loop-IP 6100 EIU. 3.2 LED States There are two LEDs on the left-hand side of the front panel. One is labeled PWR and one is labeled TRIB. The DATA port on the RHS of the front panel also has two LEDs. The operating states of LEDS are shown in Figure 3-1 below.
