CP2102 Serial to USB Converter Board Introduction: It is the smallest USB - serial module. This module is designed according to Users' convenience. It helps User to interface the UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter) supporting devices/modules with the PCs or laptops through serial or USB port. This module has standard USB type-b connector to minimize the size of the module. It is ideal for new development purposes as well as a platform for adding a USB or serial interface to existing product designs. MAX232 IC acts as transition stage between RS232 (Recommended Standard 232) and TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) / CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) voltage levels. One of the pin of MAX232 called receivers (Rx) convert from RS-232 to TTL voltage levels and driver pin (Tx) converts from TTL logic to RS-232 voltage levels. The MAX232 supports RTS/CTS hardware handshaking. Similarly, FT232 acts as transition stage between USB and TTL/CMOS voltage levels thus allowing data to be read/write through USB port. Features: Linear separate pin-out for Transmit data pin (TxD) and Receive data pin (RxD) Onboard Serial port (DB9 Female Connector) and USB type-b port Helps to interface USB or Serial port device with module supporting UART Four LED showing status of TxD, RxD, SPD (bar) pins and Power LED Technical Specification: Power supply : 5V DC (either from USB or from VCC pin) Dimensional Size : 66mm x 40mm x 12mm (l x b x h) PTemperature Range : Typical Application: Interface PCs or Laptop with UART (TTL/CMOS logic) supporting module/devices like Microcontroller Bluetooth / ZigBee / Wi-Fi Module GPS (Global Positioning System) module GSM (Global System for Mobiles) module RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and Finger Print Scanner Module Smart Card Reader Module 0 C to +70 C Warning: please make sure that potential difference between any two points in this system should not be exceed than +5V DC.
Hardware Description: Power LED FT232 IC GND USB type-b Connector Serial Port / DB9 Connector for RS232 RXD and TXD Indicator LEDs FT232 IC: FT232 IC is the one which converts TTL logic to USB logic so that devices works on TTL logic can share the data with devices connected through USB cables. To know about pinout of this IC please download datasheet from our website. TXD RXD GND MAX232 IC: The MAX232 is an integrated circuit that converts signals from an RS-232 serial port to signals suitable for use in TTL compatible digital logic circuits, so that devices works on TTL logic can share the data with devices connected through Serial port (DB9 Connector). USB type-b connector: USB connector provides connection between FT232 Serial to USB converter board and USB port of Computer System. This USB is type-b Female connector, its pinout is as shown in figure. Serial port / DB9 connector: User just needs to attach RS232 cable here so that it can be connected to devices which has Serial port / DB9 Connector.
Indicator LEDs: Indicator LEDs just used to indicate status accordingly. These are three LEDs represents Power Status, RxD and TxD respectively. Power LED will keep on until the power supply is enable to FT232 IC. When data is received by this module RxD LED will blink. When data is transmitted by this module TxD LED will blink. GND, RXD and TXD pins: These pins will be used connect external connections to devices. VCC pin should be connected to regulated +5V DC only from any of source, if USB cable is connected to device then no need to give external +5V DC supply to this pin. GND should be connected to 0V DC supply of device so that both devices has same ground. RXD pin should be connected to TXD pin of connected device whereas TXD pin should be connected to RXD pin of connected device. FT232 Expansion Pins: These pins lets User to have ease access of FT232 IC s pins externally. These pins are expanded by using Straight Single Berg Strip Connector. User can directly connect these pins for external use through Single Berg Wire or Relimate connector. To know more details about these pins please go through Datasheets.
FT232 Driver Installation: This guide will help user step by step installation of FT232 Serial to USB converter Driver. Following are illustrated steps for installation of FT232 driver in Windows 7 (x64) operating System. Step 1: Connect USB s one end to USB port of Desktop or Laptop Computer system. Connect another end to FT232 Module s USB connector. Step 2: When User connected FT232 module with USB port of Desktop or Laptop, it will prompt User one message Device driver software was not successfully installed Step 3: Go to Start menu > Right click on Computer option > Click on Manage
Step 4: Computer Management window will open. Click on Device Manager option on left side list. Step 5: User will see FT232R USB UART option with yellow icon. Right click on option and select Update Driver Software...
Step 6: New window will appear with two options, click on second option Browse my computer for driver software Step 7: Click on Browse... button to locate driver folder path.
Step 8: Locate Driver folder and then select folder according to operating system (either 64 bit or 32 bit). Click on OK. Step 9: Click on Next.
Step 10: Let the installation be completed. Once installation completed, message will be appear as Windows has successfully updated your driver software. Click on Close.
Step 11: New window will appear to ask user about restart your computer, click on Yes as it is necessary to update driver. Step 12: Once system restarted, User may get this message window. If not then go to Device Manager again and click on update driver once again. Step 13: Go to Device Manager and expand Ports (COM & LPT). Check COM port number of USB Serial Port.
