PCI Express to 6Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Host Bus Adapters User Guide Chapter 1: Introduction Overview Chapter 1 Introduction This chapter describes the LSI PCI Express to 6Gb/s SAS host bus adapters. 1.1 Overview The LSI PCIe to SAS host bus adapters provide four, eight, or sixteen serial ports for connection to SAS/SATA (Serial ATA) devices. Each port is capable of 6Gb/s SAS link rates and 1.5Gb/s or 3Gb/s SATA link rates. The PCI Express transmission and reception data rate is 5Gb/s in each direction, yielding a total bandwidth of 10Gb/s for each full-duplex lane. The LSI PCIe to SAS host bus adapters use four, eight, or sixteen PCI Express PHYs, which provide possible host-side maximum transmission and reception rates of up to 4GB/s. The LSISAS9211-4i, LSISAS9210-8i, LSISAS9211-8i, LSISAS9200-8e, LSISAS9212-4i4e, and LSISAS9200-16e PCIe to SAS host bus adapters contain Flash ROM for storing the BIOS and firmware, and NVSRAM for storing nonvolatile RAID information. The LEDs on the host bus adapters report a heartbeat. Fusion-MPT firmware operates the host bus adapter. The PCI Express interface is compliant with the PCI Express Specification, revision 2.0. All PCI software is backward compliant with previous versions of the PCI/PCI-X specifications. The LSI PCIe to SAS products implement the PCI Express interface as a x8 interface. The LSI PCIe to SAS host bus adapters use either a standard PCI or a low-profile, PCI-bracket type. The LSI PCIe to SAS host bus adapter SAS interface is compatible with the ANSI Serial Attached SCSI Specification, revision 2.0 and the Serial ATA Specification, revision 2.6. The functionality of LSI PCIe to SAS host bus adapters comes from either the LSISAS2004 controller chip, the LSISAS2008 controller chip, or the LSISAS2116 controller chips. The LSISAS2004 integrates four high-performance SAS/SATA PHYs, the LSISAS2008 integrates eight high-performance SAS/SATA PHYs, and the LSISAS2116 integrates sixteen high-performance SAS/SATA PHYs. The design of LSI PCIe to SAS host bus adapters makes it easy to add SAS interfaces to any computer, workstation, or server with a PCI Express bus. The LSI PCIe to SAS host bus adapters use either the LSISAS2004 controller, the LSISAS2008 controller, or the LSISAS2116 controller. The LSISAS2004 controller connects up to four SAS/SATA devices to a computer system through the PCI Express interface. The LSISAS2008 controller connects up to eight SAS/SATA devices to a computer system through the PCI Express interface. The LSISAS2116 controller connects up to sixteen SAS/SATA devices to a computer system through the PCI Express interface. The LSI controllers use either a x4 or x8 PCI Express connector. The LSISAS2004, the LSISAS2008, and the LSISAS2116 controller chips contain the PCI Express functionality for the LSI PCIe to SAS host bus adapters. The controller chip connects directly to the PCI Express bus and generates timing and protocol in compliance with the PCI Express specification. LSI Corporation Confidential March 2010 Page 5
