Fusion F2 Setup Connect Fusion F2 to esata Host Controller and Power Source 1. Connect either pair of the supplied esata data cables between Fusion F2 and the SATA host controller in your computer, or between the F2 and your Sonnet Qio universal media reader & writer; verify the connectors are plugged in securely (Figure 3). Please note that if you are connecting Fusion F2 to an ExpressCard adapter for a notebook computer, connect the esata cables to the adapter before inserting the adapter into the computer s ExpressCard slot. 2. Connect a power source using any of the following methods; verify the cable is plugged in securely: power cable Figure 3 esata data cable a. Connect the supplied 1-meter power cable between the Fusion F2 and a FireWire 400 connector on your computer or powered FireWire hub, or a FireWire 800 connector on your computer using the included adapter. b. Connect the supplied.15-meter power cable between the F2 and the Sonnet Qio. c. Connect the optional Fusion World Travel Power Adapter (part # PWR-UAC-12V). 3. If you are using a Mac and it is powered on, two Disk Insertion windows will appear onscreen; click Initialize to launch Disk Utility so you may format the Fusion F2 drives; proceed to Mac OS Drive Formatting & Configuration below. If you are using Windows, you will need to reformat the drives in order to use them; skip to Windows Drive Formatting & Configuration on the next page. Mac OS Drive Formatting & Configuration This section describes the process of creating a RAID set using Disk Utility under Mac OS X Version 10.5; steps for formatting under Mac OS X Version 10.6 are nearly identical. If you are using Fusion F2 with a computer running Windows, go to the next page for drive formatting information. Support Note: The drives included with Fusion F2 have been formatted using either the GUID partition table (for use with Intel-based Mac computers) or Apple Partition Map. If you need to change the configuration, click the Options button with the Partition Tab selected in Disk Utility. 1. If it is not already open, launch Disk Utility and click the Partition tab (Figure 4). 2. Select one of the Fusion F2 s drives, choose 1 Partition from the Volume Scheme pop-up menu, choose the partition table type by clicking the Options button, and then click Apply (Figure 4). Repeat with the remaining Fusion F2 drive. Figure 4 3

Fusion F2 Setup Mac OS Drive Formatting & Configuration (continued) 3. Click the RAID tab in the Disk Utility window, select the Fusion F2 drives and drag them into the disk field (Figure 5). Be careful NOT to accidentally drag in a drive you don t want included in the RAID. 4. From the pop-up menus, select the volume format and the RAID scheme, and then type in the name for your RAID volume (Figure 5). Click the Create button. Figure 5 5. When the Creating RAID window appears, click the Create button; the selected drives will be formatted and the RAID volume created (Figure 6). Close Disk Utility; your drives are now ready for use and your installation is complete. Windows Drive Formatting & Configuration This section describes the process of formatting and configuring Fusion F2 s drives under Windows Vista; steps for formatting under Windows 7 and XP Professional are nearly identical. Figure 6 1. Start Windows, and then click Start > Control Panel. 2. In the Control Panel window, double-click Administrative Tools. If you are using Vista and have not disabled User Account Control (UAC), a UAC window will appear; click Continue. 3. In the Administrative Tools window, click the Disk Management link to launch the Disk Management application. 4. If an Initialize Disk window appears, skip to step 12 (Figure 7). Otherwise, close the Disk Management application, and then proceed to the next step. Figure 7 Support Note: The drives included with your Fusion F2 may have been formatted using the GUID partition table for use with Intel-based Mac computers. If this is the case, you must clean the drives following steps 5 10 before you can format the drives for use with your Windows computer. 5. Click the Start button, type command window in the Start Search field, and then click the command prompt link to launch the Command Prompt application (Figure 8). 6. Type clean and then press Enter to erase all the information on the drive and prepare it for formatting by Windows (Figure 9). 10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for the other Fusion F2 drive, and then close both the DISKPART and Command windows. Figure 9 11. In the Administrative Tools window, click the Disk Management link to launch the Disk Management application. 12. When the Initialize Disk window appears, select a partition style, and then click OK; both Fusion F2 drives will be initialized (Figure 10). Figure 10 13. Right click the name field of one of the Fusion F2 drives and select the formatting type you wish to use for the Fusion F2 s drives (Figure 11). 14. Depending on the formatting type you chose, a Wizard may appear; follow the onscreen instructions to complete formatting of the drive(s). Once the drives are finished being formatted, they are ready to use. Figure 11 5

Tips and Additional Information Tips Hot-plugging drives: Fusion F2 supports drive hot-plugging* for Mac users, and for Windows users using a notebook computer with an ExpressCard adapter, enabling you to connect or disconnect Fusion F2 without having to shut down your computer. This does not mean you can simply unplug a cable at any time; you must follow the procedures below or you may lose data in the process. Before disconnecting your Fusion F2, you must put away (eject, unmount, dismount) the drive volume. For Mac OS users, simply drag the drive icon associated with the drive(s) you wish to remove to the eject icon on the dock. Windows users using the F2 with a notebook computer may left-click the eject icon in the taskbar for the drive they wish to eject. * Windows and Linux do not provide hot swap support for drives (drive enclosures) connected to a SATA host controller card installed in a desktop PC or server. Connections: If you experience issues where a drive or volume does not appear on your computer, or you see an error message stating a drive is missing when you have the drives configured as a RAID set, the cause may be as simple as a loose connector. Disconnect the data cables and reconnect them, making sure they click in place.
