Describe your problem and gather background information. Then see Submit the problem to IBM Software Support on page xii for information on contacting IBM Software Support. x IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer Installation and User s Guide

Setting up a software maintenance contract Set up a software maintenance contract. The type of contract that you need depends on the type of product you hae. For IBM distributed software products (including, but not limited to, Tioli, Lotus, and Rational products, as well as IBM DB2 and IBM WebSphere products that run on Microsoft Windows or UNIX operating systems), enroll in IBM Passport Adantage in one of the following ways: Online: Go to the Passport Adantage Web page at http://www.ibm.com/ software/lotus/passportadantage/, click How to enroll, and follow the instructions. By Phone: For the phone number to call in your country, go to the IBM Software Support Handbook Web page at http://www14.software.ibm.com/ webapp/set2/sas/f/handbook/home.html and click Contacts. For serer software products, you can purchase a software maintenance agreement by working directly with an IBM sales representatie or an IBM Business Partner. For more information about support for serer software products, go to the IBM Technical support adantage Web page at http://www.ibm.com/serers/. If you are not sure what type of software maintenance contract you need, call 1-800-IBMSERV (1-800-426-7378) in the United States. For a list of telephone numbers of people who proide support for your location, go to the Software Support Handbook page at http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/ handbook/home.html. Determine the business impact When you report a problem to IBM, you are asked to supply a seerity leel. Therefore, you need to understand and assess the business impact of the problem you are reporting. Seerity 1 Seerity 2 Seerity 3 Seerity 4 Critical business impact: You are unable to use the program, resulting in a critical impact on operations. This condition requires an immediate solution. Significant business impact: The program is usable but is seerely limited. Some business impact: The program is usable with less significant features (not critical to operations) unaailable. Minimal business impact: The problem causes little impact on operations, or a reasonable circumention to the problem has been implemented. Describe the problem and gather background information When explaining a problem to IBM, it is helpful to be as specific as possible. Include all releant background information so that IBM Software Support specialists can help you sole the problem efficiently. To sae time, know the answers to these questions: What software ersions were you running when the problem occurred? Do you hae logs, traces, and messages that are related to the problem symptoms? IBM Software Support is likely to ask for this information. Can the problem be recreated? If so, what steps led to the failure? Hae any changes been made to the system? For example, hardware, operating system, networking software, and so on. Preface xi

Are you currently using a workaround for this problem? If so, be prepared to explain it when you report the problem. Submit the problem to IBM Software Support You can submit the problem to IBM Software Support online or by phone. Online Go to the IBM Software Support Web site at http://www.ibm.com/ software/support/probsub.html. Enter your information into the appropriate problem submission tool. By phone For the phone number to call in your country, go to the contacts page of the IBM Software Support Handbook at http://www14.software.ibm.com/ webapp/set2/sas/f/handbook/home.html. If the problem that you submit is for a software defect or for missing or inaccurate documentation, IBM Software Support creates an Authorized Program Analysis Report (APAR). The APAR describes the problem in detail. If a workaround is possible, IBM Software Support proides one for you to implement until the APAR is resoled and a fix is deliered. IBM publishes resoled APARs on the Tioli Storage Manager product support Web site at http://www.ibm.com/software/ sysmgmt/products/support/ibmtiolistoragemanager.html, so that users who experience the same problem can benefit from the same resolutions. What to do when you encounter a problem You can resole some problems by yourself that you may encounter during Data Protection for Exchange processing. If you encounter a problem during Data Protection for Exchange processing, follow these steps as your first attempt to resole the problem: 1. Retry the operation that failed. 2. If the problem occurred during an incremental, differential, or database copy backup, run a full backup. If the full backup completes successfully, retry the operation that failed. 3. If the problem still exists, close other applications, especially those applications that interact with Exchange (antiirus applications, for example). Retry the operation that failed. 4. If the problem still exists: a. Shut down the Exchange serer. b. Start the Exchange serer again. c. Run the operation that failed. 5. If the problem still exists: a. Shut down the entire machine. b. Start the machine again. c. Run the operation that failed. 6. If the problem still exists, determine if it is occurring on other Exchange serers. xii IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer Installation and User s Guide

Determining if the problem resides on Tioli Storage Manager or Exchange You can help determine whether a problem is a Data Protection for Exchange issue or an Exchange serer issue. Legacy operations and VSS operations hae different sets of steps to follow to help determine the source of the problem. For Legacy operations, perform the following steps to help identify the source of the problem: Try recreating the problem with the Microsoft NTBACKUP utility. This utility uses a call sequence similar to Data Protection for Exchange to run an online backup. If the problem is recreatable with NTBACKUP then the problem most likely exists within the Exchange serer. Try recreating the problem with the Microsoft BACKREST application. This application can run backups using the Microsoft Exchange APIs. If the problem is recreatable with BACKREST, then the problem most likely exists within the Exchange serer. Microsoft includes BACKREST with the Exchange Software Deeloper s Kit (SDK). IBM Serice can proide a copy of BACKREST if you encounter problems obtaining or building this application. Check whether the error message ACN5350E An unknown Exchange API error has occurred is displayed. If this message is displayed, the Exchange serer encountered an unexpected situation. Microsoft assistance may be needed if the problem continues. Data Protection for Exchange error messages occasionally contain an HRESULT code. Use this code to search Microsoft documentation and the Microsoft Knowledge Base for resolution information. The Exchange SDK file ESEBKMSG.H contain these messages. For VSS operations, perform the following steps to help identify the source of the problem: Try recreating the problem with the Microsoft VSHADOW application. This application can run backups using the Microsoft Exchange VSS APIs. If the problem is recreatable with VSHADOW, then the problem most likely exists within the VSS proider or the Exchange serer. Microsoft includes VSHADOW with the Volume Shadow Copy Serices (VSS) Software Deeloper s Kit (SDK). IBM Serice can proide a copy of VSHADOW if you encounter problems obtaining or building this application. You can also search the IBM Tioli Storage Manager: Problem Determination Guide for helpful diagnostic information at this Web site: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/ infocenter/tsminfo/6/index.jsp Installation Problems: Creating an installation-log file In the eent of an installation failure, gather the installation information details to assist IBM Software Support when ealuating your situation. Chapter 1. Data Protection for Exchange oeriew Mailbox restore feature This section proides introductory information about Data Protection for Exchange. Data Protection for Exchange performs online backups and restores of Microsoft Exchange Serer storage groups to Tioli Storage Manager storage and local shadow olumes. You can perform backups and restores using a command-line or graphical user interface (GUI) on Windows Serer 2003 and Windows Serer 2008. Refer to your Exchange Serer documentation for complete, detailed information regarding the backup and restore of Microsoft Exchange Serers. Data Protection for Exchange operations use the Tioli Storage Manager application program interface (API) to communicate with the Tioli Storage Manager serer and use the Exchange API to communicate with the Exchange Serer. In addition to using these APIs, Data Protection for Exchange VSS operations also use the Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client and Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Serice technology to produce an online snapshot (point-in-time consistent copy) of Exchange data that can be stored on local shadow olumes or on Tioli Storage Manager serer storage. You must install Data Protection for Exchange on the same machine as the Exchange Serer. Data Protection for Exchange must be able to connect to a Tioli Storage Manager serer running on any supported operating system. See Software and operating system requirements on page 29 for the required leel of Tioli Storage Manager serer. Optionally, the Tioli Storage Manager serer can be on the same machine as the Exchange Serer. Data Protection for Exchange also supports operations in a Microsoft Cluster Serer (MSCS) or Veritas Cluster Serer (VCS) enironment. Data Protection for Exchange 6.1 proides the new mailbox restore feature. With the Data Protection for Exchange 6.1 mailbox restore feature, you can perform indiidual mailbox recoery and item-leel recoery operations in Microsoft Exchange Serer 2003 or Microsoft Exchange Serer 2007 enironments using Data Protection for Exchange backups. Tip: Mailbox restore tracks and stores mailbox location history, which is used to automate mailbox restore operations. This causes a slight delay before each backup. Mailbox restore applies to backups that are taken with Data Protection for Exchange: For Exchange Serer 2003 enironments, mailbox restore applies to Data Protection for Exchange Legacy backups only. For Exchange Serer 2003, mailbox restore operations cannot be performed using VSS Backups. For Exchange Serer 2007 enironments, mailbox restore applies to any Data Protection for Exchange Legacy backups or VSS Backups. Data Protection for Exchange 6.1 (and later) maintains mailbox location history. No mailbox location history is aailable for backups taken with prior ersions. If you are using the Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client Version 6.1 (or later), the Hardware Deices Snapshot Integration Module is automatically installed with the Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client. As a result, you do not need to manually install this module. The term local shadow olumes is used throughout this document to describe data that is stored on shadow olumes localized to a disk storage subsystem. Data Protection for Exchange helps protect and manage Exchange Serer data by making it easy to perform the following actions: Back up Exchange Serer storage groups and transaction logs Maintain multiple ersions of Exchange Serer storage group and transaction log backups Restore storage group and transaction log backups and replay the transaction log files Automatically inactiate preious backups when performing a full backup Automate scheduled backups (see Chapter 6, Using the Tioli Storage Manager scheduler, on page 175) Chapter 1. A backup performed by Data Protection for Exchange creates a copy of an Exchange Serer storage group on Tioli Storage Manager serer storage. The backup includes any associated transaction logs. Tip: Data Protection for Exchange 6.1 (and later) tracks and stores mailbox location history, which is used to automate mailbox restore operations. This causes a slight delay before each backup. When a Legacy backup operation is initiated, Data Protection for Exchange performs the following actions: 1. Begins a session with a Tioli Storage Manager serer. 2. Informs the Exchange Serer that a backup is ready to begin. 3. Forwards data from the Exchange Serer to the Tioli Storage Manager serer. 4. Informs the Exchange Serer that the backup is complete. 5. Ends the Tioli Storage Manager serer session. Data Protection for Exchange proides backup and restore functions for the Exchange storage groups and associated transaction logs. Data Protection for Exchange does not proide a complete disaster recoery solution for an Exchange Serer. In a disaster recoery situation, Data Protection for Exchange only restores storage groups. Other files need to be restored in a disaster recoery situation. Refer to your Microsoft Exchange Serer documentation for disaster recoery considerations. Personal folders and personal address books that are stored on Microsoft Outlook clients are not protected by Data Protection for Exchange. The Tioli Storage 4 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer Installation and User s Guide

Manager Backup-Archie client can be used on the Outlook client platform to back up and restore these files. Because the Outlook client normally keeps these files locked when running, you should stop the Outlook client before backing up or restoring these files. Because Tioli Storage Manager Backup-Archie client proides open file support, you might be able to back up and restore these files while the Outlook client is running. VSS Backup processing: Oeriew Data Protection for Exchange VSS Backup operations are implemented through the Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client. The Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client seres as the VSS Requestor that communicates with VSS to access the Exchange data to create shadow copies of Exchange storage groups. Thus, Data Protection for Exchange seres as a front end for VSS Backup operations and performs the following actions when a VSS Backup operation is initiated: 1. Data Protection for Exchange alidates the state of Exchange serer objects. 2. It begins a session with a Tioli Storage Manager serer. 3. It erifies that the VSS serice is running and that the Exchange writer is aailable. 4. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS Requestor lists the backup components through the VSS Writer. 5. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS Requestor performs the VSS snapshot backup preparation stage. 6. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS Requestor performs the actual VSS Backup. 7. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS Requestor performs an integrity check on the VSS Backup. 8. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS Requestor backs up the data (and metadata) to a Tioli Storage Manager serer. Optionally, the moement of data to a Tioli Storage Manager serer can be offloaded to an alternate machine that has the Tioli Storage Manager VSS Requestor installed and configured. 9. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS Requestor marks the backup as complete in VSS. 10. Data Protection for Exchange ends the Tioli Storage Manager serer session. Because of the role that the backup-archie client performs as the VSS Requestor, features such as LAN-free backup, database encryption, and data compression require that options related to these features be specified in the backup-archie client options file (and not the Data Protection for Exchange options file) for VSS operations. The Tioli Storage Manager for Copy Serices Exchange VSS Integration Module enables the backup-archie client to sere as the VSS Requestor. VSS Serice The VSS Serice manages and directs VSS software applications. These are the VSS software applications that the VSS Serice manages and directs: VSS writer The VSS writer is the Microsoft Exchange Serer. It is installed with the Exchange Serer software and requires no configuration. VSS requestor The VSS requestor is the Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client. Chapter 1. Data Protection for Exchange oeriew 5

VSS proider The VSS proider manages the olumes where the Exchange data resides. Configuration requirements are based upon the type of VSS proider used in your enironment. For example: If you are using the Windows VSS System Proider, no configuration is required. If your Exchange storage is configured on a disk storage subsystem and you plan to perform offloaded backups or full-copy snapshot backups (ersus copy-on-write (COW) snapshot backups as described in VSS Backup on page 8), you must install a VSS hardware proider. If you plan to perform VSS Instant Restores, be aware that IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller, DS6000, and DS8000 are the only storage subsystems that support VSS Instant Restores and require a VSS proider. Therefore, you must install and configure IBM System Storage Support for Microsoft Virtual Disk and Volume Shadow Copy Serices as your VSS hardware proider in order to perform VSS Instant Restores. VSS proider support and documentation for IBM System Storage disk storage subsystems is aailable at the following Web site: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/dociew.wss?uid=ssg1s4000342&rs=555 If you are using a VSS software proider, consult the documentation proided with your VSS software proider. For more information about VSS technology, see the Microsoft Technical Reference document How Volume Shadow Copy Serice Works at the following Web site: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserer/en/library/2b0d2457-b7d8-42c3- b6c9-59c145b7765f1033.mspx?mfr=true Backup types Data Protection for Exchange proides fie types of backup. The full backup and copy backup types can be performed with legacy and VSS operations. The incremental backup, differential backup, and database copy backup types can be performed with legacy operations only. Data Protection for Exchange backup types hae the following characteristics: Full Backup (Legacy and VSS) A full backup backs up the specified storage group, as well as associated transaction logs. The Exchange Serer deletes the committed log files after the storage group and logs are successfully checked for integrity and backed up. The log files are not deleted if storage groups are not mounted. Incremental Backup (Legacy only) An incremental backup backs up only transaction logs. The Exchange Serer deletes the committed log files after they are successfully backed up. These log files are not deleted if the backup fails. Restoration of an Exchange Serer storage group from an incremental backup requires the following tasks: Restore of the last full backup Restore of any other incremental backups performed between the full backup and this incremental backup Restore of this incremental backup The log files are not deleted if storage groups are not mounted. Differential Backup (Legacy only) A differential backup only backs up transaction logs, but does not delete 6 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer Installation and User s Guide
