Sunny Design 2.2 What's New? The selection list of the inverter types is generated according to country. Only the inverters that are approved for the country in which the system is located are listed. This function can also be switched off. The location display for the printout of results can be changed as defined by the user. The Chinese language feature has been added to Sunny Design. 2.3 Scope of Delivery Sunny Design can be downloaded from the SMA web server or ordered as a CD. 2.4 Accessories A range of weather databases are available for download on the SMA web server. They can be installed retrospectively to check the design of PV systems for other countries. 2.5 Identification The window shown at right can be opened using the [Help] menu and the [Info] menu item. The following information can be seen in the three windows: 1. Program information Program version and supporting institutes 2. Database information Type and version of the modules installed, e. g. inverter, weather data etc. 3. Location data List of the locations/regions of all installed weather databases currently available on the PC User Manual SDesign-BEN082215 6

Installation 3 Installation To install Sunny Design, start the setup file and follow the instructions on the screen. You can install additional weather databases retrospectively. The SMA web site in the internet contains additional weather databases and updates. To do so, click [Database] > [Retrieve download page] after installation. 3.1 System Requirements Sunny Design requires the following for installation. Supported Operating Systems Windows 98SE Windows ME Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6.0a) Windows 2000 Windows XP Minimum Processor Speed and Resources Pentium III 800 Mhz or comparable processor 128 MB RAM 250 MB free hard disk space 1024 x 768 pixels resolution with 256 colors Internet Explorer 5.01 7 SDesign-BEN082215 User Manual

Operation 4 Operation The welcome screen is displayed after you start Sunny Design. You can either: open a saved project; older Sunny Design projects, from version 1.02 on, can also be opened, start a new project, or close the program. The Program Interface 5 1 2 3 4 1. Menu bar 2. Operation 4.1 PV system This page contains data specifications for the PV generator. The location, module type and number of modules are minimum required entries. 4.1.1 Location Please enter the location of the PV system. Sunny Design calculates all other values based on the location and the weather data. PV Module Temperatures This allows you to make detailed entries on the module temperature. Sunny Design suggests values based on the weather data. 4.1.2 Modules Select the manufacturer and module type to be used in this project. In generator size, you can enter either the number of PV modules or the required peak output. Modules entered manually are identified with *User* as an ending after the manufacturer's name. Modules entered manually and modules provided by SMA which have the same names in the database after an update are identified with * as the ending. New Module You can enter modules which are not in the Sunny Design database manually. To do so, click <New module> and enter all required technical specifications of the module. Sunny Design requires all values marked with * to work with the modules. If you do not have all values required, please contact the manufacturer of the module. Edit Module This button is only displayed when you select a module you created yourself. You can change the module data or delete the module on the page which opens. 4.1.3 Tilt Angle The Sunny Design sets the ideal tilt angle automatically after you select the location. If the actual angle is different, click the checkbox before <optimized> to remove the tick. You can then set the tilt angle manually. 9 SDesign-BEN082215 User Manual

Operation 4.1.4 Azimuth The Sunny Design sets the ideal azimuth automatically after you select the location. If the actual angle is different, you can set the azimuth manually. If the PV modules track the sun, click the checkbox before <Tracking>, so that a tick is displayed there. 4.2 Inverter This page allows you to select the inverter for the PV generator set and enter details on wiring. 4.2.1 Select Inverters Select an inverter from the list. The selection list of the inverters is country-specific. Only the inverters that are approved for the country in which the system is located are listed. You can restrict the list of inverters displayed by including or excluding certain types of inverters using the <Category selection> button. If you place a checkmark in front of <Ignore country selection> inverters that are not approved for the country in which the system is located are also listed. Sunny Design rounds the number of modules to a range compatible for the inverter. This is not necessarily the best solution. 4.2.2 System Configuration This shows the current system configuration. This allows you to increase the number of inverters and change the grid voltage. User Manual SDesign-BEN082215 10

Operation 4.2.3 PV/Inverter Check List The Sunny Design software indicates via a colored bar whether the combination is permitted in accordance with the PV generator and inverter selected. Green The system is designed well. The combination is permitted. Yellow The inverter is too large for the PV generator, or vice versa. This can cause yield losses. The combination is permitted. Red The PV generator or inverter exceeds critical limit values. Sunny Design marks the values on the check list with four different symbols. Green the value is OK. Blue the value was adjusted by Sunny Design. Yellow the value is too low or too high, yield will be lost. Red the value endangers the inverter or the PV generator. Switch from the system overview (top right) to the Help view for specific solutions for the warnings. 4.2.4 Multi-String Inverter If you have selected a Multi-String inverter, you can configure the strings individually. You can also set different PV generators and the alignment for individual strings separately on the Multi-String entry page. 4.2.5 Cabling If the <Automatically recalculate> checkbox is activated, Sunny Design automatically suggests the cable length and the cable cross-section. If this is the case, manual entries are overwritten. The checkbox is deactivated automatically if entries are made manually and the changes are retained. 11 SDesign-BEN082215 User Manual

Operation Change the cable length and cross-section such that losses and the cable resistance are minimized and not within the critical range. Please note the VDE instructions for cable properties. 4.3 Result Yield calculations are estimates based on mathematical models. The real energy yield will differ from these calculations. This page shows a summary of all settings made to date. You can also create individual result reports using the <Preview>, <Layout> and <Print> buttons. 4.3.1 PV Generator This shows the details on the PV generator. 4.3.2 Inverter This shows the details on the inverter. 4.3.3 Compatibility Check If the compatibility check displays a yellow curve, return to the inverter page and correct the corresponding data if necessary. See section 4.2.3 "PV/Inverter Check List" (Page 11). 4.3.4 Estimated System Performance This provides an overview of the estimated system performance. User Manual SDesign-BEN082215 12

Operation 4.3.5 Preview This provides a print preview of the current layout settings. 4.3.6 Layout This allows you to compile or edit information for the printout. All texts which are clearly visible in this window fit on the printout. You can also save the result and the check list as a pdf. 4.3.7 Print Click this button to print the results page. 13 SDesign-BEN082215 User Manual
