User test reports for SETT project on assistive technology Eneso enpathia (virtual head mouse ) and Eneso encore (USB switch interface) supplied by Alpha-Active Ltd March 2015 These assistive technology products were evaluated by people with a disability working on the Services for Enabling Technology (SETT) project. The project is a partnership between National Star and Beaumont specialist colleges, funded by JISC (www.jisc.ac.uk), working with developers of assistive technologies to review products, providing feedback to companies and potential users. The test reports are provided as received without editing by the manufacturer (Eneso) or the supplier and project participant (Alpha-Active Ltd). Please visit the SETT project web site at: www.producttesting.org.uk where videos may be seen. National Star College (www.natstar.ac.uk) and Beaumont College (http://www.scope.org.uk/support/services/education/beaumont-college) are Ofsted Grade 1 specialist colleges providing Further Education, supported living and services for people with disabilities and training for professionals. They support people to maximise opportunities for living, occupation and employment and have expertise with assistive technologies for IT Access, communication and independent living. Further information on the Eneso enpathia (virtual head mouse ) and the Eneso encore (USB switch interface) supplied in the UK by Alpha-Active Ltd may be found at: www.alpha-active.com/at.html. Rating Scale: Please tick the relevant box. 1 Poor 2 Ok 3 good 4 v. good Functionality Tester Comments Supervisor comments Quite sensitive to movements, and accurate Needed some supervision once calibrated correctly. Had to slow down to get the Velcro the sensitivity. attached before plugging The Options tab is hard to select, a further in the USB. Option isn t always displayed. I found it hard to find the Keyboard. The introduction would have been useful on the plugging in of the USB. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Ease of setup The setup was quite simple, after attaching the wire to the USB plug and placing the head strap in a comfortable position. I was unsure which slot to plug the wire into as I hadn t read the instructions completely before I tried it. Needed some prompting from the supervisor to try the end of the USB. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Ease of learning I felt I was able to learn how to direct the mouse on my screen quite easily. I did feel the calibration was quite quick and could have benefited from and option to have an Audio prompt. Liam picked up quite quickly to tilt his head rather than to turn Left or Right. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Initial Setup Support The Programme had already been installed on the Testing Laptop. I would have been able to install it on my own laptop using the disk provided in the pack. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Ongoing Setup Support I didn t need any. I just started to use it and find out for myself how to find the bits I needed. If I was less patient I might have struggled to find the Menu and keyboard options. It took me a while to find these. It would be easier if there was a one click option for the Liam wanted to try the Head Mouse out without any further assistance. keyboard. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Sensory & It feels comfortable to wear, nice and soft Tactile aspects to touch and not irritating. I was able to adjust it to fit my head and move it around to find a good position. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Physical considerations (e.g. positioning) I had to recalibrate when I moved in my chair after a short period of time meaning my resting position wasn t consistent. Sensitivity changed with support. 3

Finding my resting position was difficult as there wasn t an obvious area to focus my head position back into. The mouse never seemed to stop moving, even when I had. I m not sure if I had the sensitivity too high? Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Aesthetic Appeal The device looks really smart in the well packaged box. The information provided with the device is printed on nice paper, it may need to be able in larger text or as an option on screen for a user to read. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Robustness It looks well made, and fairly robust. I would be worried the connecting wire may be susceptible to breakage due to its thickness. I did feel comfortable wearing it that I might have accidentally stood up wearing it and walked off. Would a Bluetooth option be available? 4

Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Possible risks (i.e. health and wellbeing considerations) Leaving the computer whilst wearing the device might prove dangerous. I played with the wire as it was dangling down at the side of the laptop, so I might have made the connection loose over time. Prompts were given to ensure Liam stayed at the desk with the Head Mouse on. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Compatibility see developers notes (Devices? Software?) It was compatible with the laptop I tested it on. I think it would have been fine on my own laptop as I run the same version of Windows as the College. May need to be tested from an install? Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Conformance to Standards It appeared to have been checked and well packaged by Eneso. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Training None really needed. Just time to practice enabled me to get used to the device. Having a supervisor was useful. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Quality and range of available support materials I had the Black and White user guide and the Quick start paper guides. On the screen I had the Help tab. I didn t spend much time reading the user guide as there was a lot of paperwork. I flicked through the Quick Start user guide because it was in colour and looked interesting. Liam would have required some support to have read through the whole user guide. Some of the terminology was un-clear and didn t follow the order of setup on screen. 5

I felt I was better to just try the device and refer to the guide if I needed some support or had a query. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 General Usability Summary It s the first time I have used something like this as I have use of my Left arm. I found it really interesting to use and experiment with. It s not something I would use personally but I can see the benefits to those who don t have use of their Arms. Tester Rating 1 2 3 4 Which features I really liked the on screen Keyboard once I are had found it. I liked being able to test a liked/disliked? new product and one that I could recommend to some of my friends. I liked the visual display at the beginning of the calibration. The cartoon moving itself to demonstrate what was being asked. This ideally needs to be slowed down to allow for users to complete the task. Being able to setup my own profile was useful and I think each time I used the device I would get better and better at using it. I liked the ability to change the keyboard size and the Quick start guide for reference. There wasn t anything I disliked about the product. It is a good piece of kit for the right user. 6

Recommendati ons for use (e.g. contexts; environments) It would be good for use within a Classroom environment with a PC or a laptop. I could see this being used on a personal device at home or in work. Any additional comments: Tester Supervisor Overall Rating 1 2 3 4 7

The other functions weren t as easy to use and I m not sure why I d use it? Initial Setup Support The programme was installed by the IT Tech dept. It worked well. The tester was encouraged to have a go with the product and see what happens- no instructions or product submission completed. Ongoing Setup None Support 14

Test Report 4: encore Tester Ref: Product Ref: 007 Date: 26.01.2015 Company Name: National Star Product Name: EnCore USB Switch Interface Product Description (See product Switch Adapter with eight inputs. Software included to customise input settings including button configuration (mouse, keyboard or joystick) and speed settings. Connects with USB cable (included) and has required software on rectangular CD. Rating Scale: Please cross the relevant box. Tester Comments Supervisor comments Functionality Works well as switch adapter, no noticeable problems. Flexible and could be used for a large combination of personalised controls to allow access Ease of setup Not particularly clear initially what was needed, but once the software was located on the CD it was easy to set up. Could have simple instructions on back of case. Tester Rating Very good Good OK Poor Ease of learning Straightforward if already familiar with switches; might be too advanced for some learners. Initial Setup Support Software installation required, manual connection of switches and assigning keys using software. Fairly complex but not considering the end purpose Ongoing Setup Support On second running simply needed to be plugged in and logged onto machine. Software ran automatically. Sensory & Tactile aspects Dependant on switch system chosen, so useful to adapt for different tactile needs. Physical considerations (e.g. positioning) Unusual to have the default left switch input to the right of the right switch input but otherwise no difficulties. The switch adapter appeared to be robust enough for day to day use. Aesthetic Appeal Hardware: Clearly laid out with symbols made easy to refer to. Software: Is easy to navigate with the same clear symbols. 19

Robustness No difficulties when testing, cables all remained in place. Possible risks (i.e. health and Only the ones inherent to using so many switches cabling is difficult to keep clear. wellbeing considerations) Compatibility Tested on Windows 8.1 Enterprise see developers notes (Devices? Software?) Training Could use training in switch use and how to assign keys. Quality and range of available support Quick Start Guide did not run with text. Guide on mini-cd was clear and helpful could do with accessing this from the software. materials Summary 20

General Usability Would be useful to have an option to hit a switch combination that would bring up the options then the user could operate and modify without assistance. Overall the product was clear to use and worked without problems Which features are Liked: customisability, ease of use, size, aesthetics and interface. liked/disliked? Disliked: lack of mouse speed slider, lack of indicator on software that button has been pressed. Recommendati ons for use (e.g. contexts; environments) Any additional comments: Would have to be high functioning to make use of eight switches, probably in an office environment where shortcuts are useful. Tester Could have a removable clip on back of it to help set-up. Supervisor Overall Rating Very good Good OK Poor 21
