The IRC 1100 can be adjusted to temperature values between 400 and 1100 C (for short time 1200 C) and is used for the calibration or verification of the correct temperature-indication of pyrometers, thermal imaging systems, heatflux measurement systems or spectrographic analysis systems. 2.2 Scope of delivery Calibration source, inspection sheet, user manual.

3 Safety 3.1 General Each person working with the instrument must have read and understood the user manual before operation. Also this has to be done if the person already used similar instruments or was already trained by the manufacturer. The calibration source has only to be used for the purpose described in the manual. 3.2 Electrical connection Follow common safety regulations for mains voltage (230 V AC) connecting the IRC 1100. Touching mains voltage can be lethal. Non expert connection and mounting can cause serious health or material damage. Only qualified personnel are allowed to connect such devices to the mains voltage. 3.3 Risk of burns The temperatures generated by the calibration source may be hot enough to burn when touched. Never touch the hot calibration source. 3.4 Risk of fire Sufficient distance between the radiation surface and inflammable materials is absolutely necessary (> 30 cm). Do not touch the hot surface with materials, devices or liquids. 4 Commissioning 4.1 Electrical connection The calibration source is supplied by a supply of 220... 240 V AC. Connect the controller unit only with the provided power supply cable. The calibration source unit is controlled via the 2 supply lines. 4.2 Switching on Use the main on/off switch on the front side of the controller unit to turn on the source. Initially the controller starts with a short self test followed by starting the heating procedure. Up to 400 C this procedure proceeds with reduced speed to prevent the heating elements from damage. The display shows SOFTSTART during this time. Note: The controller unit is equipped with a fan which must be run continuously when the instrument is switched on. Afterwards the IRC 1100 automatically heats up to the last set temperature value (see 4.5 Switching off the instrument) of max. 600 C (or in works setting 400 C).

4.3 Change setpoint / controller display The required setpoint temperature can be adjusted via the arrow keys directly after the softstart procedure has finished. The display shows the following information: Calibration source temperature: Shows the current temperature of the calibration source. Working temperature or setpoint: Shows the respective setpoint temperature when changing the setpoint temperature via the arrow keys. If the input is complete the display shows the current workingtemperature. This always indicates the current temperature step that is controlled until the calibration source temperature is achieved. The maximum heat rate has been factory set to 25 C/min Calibration source temperature Working-temperature or setpoint Display for power output to the heating elements Change setpoint Display for power output to the heating elements: This display indicates the power consumption that is used to control the heating elements. Change setpoints: The required setpoint temperature is set via the arrow keys. Press the up /down buttons as required to raise or lower the temperature setpoint in 1/10 C steps. To change the setpoint faster, hold the up or down button in. Other buttons: Do not alter these keys, they are used to configure the controller. Attention: Do not alter the controller parameters set ex works. Incorrect set parameters can cause overheating and damage the instrument. 4.4 Handling the calibration source unit Do not move the calibration source unit if the temperature has exceeded 600 C. The cavity is very sensitive to vibrations and can break if subject to shock above this temperature. 4.5 Switching off Do not switch off the IRC 1100 until the calibration source has achieved a minimum temperature of 600 C. If the calibration source is switched off above this temperature it cools down too fast, compared to the 25 C per minute if cooling down is controlled. The cavity can be damaged in this case. Before switching off the instrument a maximum setpoint temperature of 600 C has to be set. After this temperature is achieved the instrument can be switched off via the main on/off switch on the front side of the controller unit. Attention: The internal temperature of the calibration source unit is controlled by fans. The fans will cycle as they are under thermostat control, also if the instrument is switched off. Do not disconnect the power cable before the fans have stopped completely and the temperature of the calibration source is near by ambient temperature.

4.6 Operating the Eurotherm controller via interface Normally only the arrow keys of the controller are used to set the required temperature. Additionally the controller can be connected via interface to a PC. In this case the setpoint temperature can be set via a Eurotherm software and PC keyboard. Be careful when using the software, the controller configuration can also be altered. Attention: Do not alter the preset controller configuration. Incorrect controller parameters can destroy the instrument due to overheating. The warranty is void if the preset controller parameters are altered. An RS232 interface cable is required to connect controller and PC. On the Eurotherm homepage the required software I-Tool is available for free download. 5 Calibrating / Verifying with the calibration source Radiation-calibration method: The calibration source is calibrated pyrometrically ex works. This means the emitted radiated temperature of the calibration source is measured with a highly accurate non contact transfer-standard-pyrometer using an emissivity ε = 100%. The temperature indication of the calibration source is then adjusted to the measured temperature of this pyrometer. This results in an effective emissivity of the calibration source in a defined spectral range of e eff = 1 in the spectral range between 1.45 and 1.8 µm. For a correct temperature measurement of an infrared thermometer the spectral range should be between 1.45 and 1.8 µm and the emissivity set to 100%. Aperture: The aperture is defined as the maximum usable diameter of the radiation source opening for calibration, that is 20 mm for the IRC 1100. The spot size of the infrared measuring instrument should not exceed this value. Note: The information contained in VDI/VDE (German Electrical Engineering Association) Directive 3511, Sheet 4 and supplementary sheet 4.4 must be observed when calibrated pyrometers and when correctly carrying out temperature measurements.

6 Maintenance 6.1 Visual check Regularly check that the connection cables and the cavity are not damaged. Before start up any damage must be rectified. In case of a problem contact IMPAC Service Department.. 6.2 Cavity The cavity is secured with retaining clamps in the calibration source unit. At regular intervals the cavity retaining clamps should be checked. Retighten the clamps if required. 6.3 Cleaning / Servicing Remove the power cable before cleaning or servicing the instrument. Clean the outside of the cabinet with a damp cloth only if necessary. Vacuum the inside occasionally to remove dust or use a soft brush. 6.4 System Integrity The life expectancy of the cavity depends on the time and temperature of operation. In particular the surface conditions of the cavity will alter with time. We recommend an occasional thermal check be made to ensure maximum system integrity. This can be done either with a highly accurate transfer standard pyrometer or the calibration source can be sent to IMPAC at regular intervals. 6.5 Transport, packaging, storage The instrument can be damaged or destroyed if shipped incorrectly. To transport or store the instrument, please use the original box or a box padded with sufficient shock-absorbing material. For storage in humid areas or shipment overseas, the device should be placed in welded foil (ideally along with silica gel) to protect it from humidity. The source is designed for a storage temperature of -10 70 C with non-condensing conditions. Other kind of storage can damage or malfunction the source.
