Current NREN Network and activities Prashant Manandhar Nepal Research & Education Network (NREN). South Asia Regional Interest Group Meeting Fall 2008 Internet2 Meeting, 14th Oct New Orleans, USA
Nepal Research and Education Network Facilitator of advanced research and education Member of Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) Develop national computational grid for R&E Establish Knowledge-Center to support ICT initiatives, supported and helping to SANOG expand to the R&E sector Collaboration with Local ISP for NREN National link. Promote and Support APAN, TIEN3, Internet2, AI3/WIDE R&E Human Resource Development, Technical and Equipments to build National NREN Supporting by NSRC, University of Oregon.
Current NREN Activity Field Server, climate change monitoring: Current Research Work between NREN, ICIMOD, DNPW, Keio University, NARC/NARO Japan and APAN-JP in Imja- Glacial lake, 10km south of Mt. Everest IPVC for telemedicine and teleteaching IPv6 Testbed network Rural network Distance Education Wireless Networking National network and human resource development for R&E.
NREN Activity in last August 2008 Hosted TEIN3 2 nd SAFS meeting, SAREN/SA-SIG conjunction with SANOG 12 in Kathmandu. SA-SIG meeting chaired by Jim Williams@Indiana University. NREN concerned - National R&E network for human resource development. NSRC as one of our development partners, Recently Dale Smith, Steve Huter, Hervey Allen@NSRC/University of Oregon provided Technical Training of Campus Network Tutorial to Universities and Colleges, augmented by networking equipment and book donations for all NREN member institutions to help build R&E network, and will be assisted again for fiber technology and network design in next training session on coming 2009 as well. http://nsrc.org/tutorials/2008/sanog12/
Chaired by Jim Williams@Indiana University and SA NREN s in SA-SIG Meeting August 2008, Kathmandu.
Technical Training Campus Networking Best Practices in SAREN/SANOG Meeting Kathmandu, Dale Smith@NSRC University of Oregon.
Lesson Learned from last SAREN/SA-SIG meeting, Kathmandu August 2008. Nepal NREN is not so behind than other South Asian NRENs still needs extensive work for establishment period. Nepal NREN ongoing activities for establishment of NREN in Nepal seem on track reference to other s experience. Great value of global and national NREN to NGOs/INGOs working in development issues such as poverty, environment, disaster management, etc. Awareness campaign of such infrastructure to them could help in funding and lobbying government and other donor agencies. Need to analysis to identify most potential stakeholders for establishing our NREN do a workshop for advocating the concept of NREN and participating in this network, our academic institutions only are not sufficient. Proposed SA-SIG and South Asian Research and Education Network meetings at least once a year in the South Asian (SA) Regions conjunction with SANOG most appropriated, might be with TEIN3 meetings. Concerned more in application areas and human resource development of R&E networks. At least once a year R&E advanced campus network training for all SA NREN in the SA regions with help of Global NREN such as NSRC.
Connectivity NRENs 80% of networks is within the Capital city, some in Central, Mid Eastern, Western and Southern Region. Testing WIDE/AI3 network through VSAT to the Global R&E networks, bandwidth 13Mbps sharing with IOE/TU. Local connectivity 2 ~ 10 Mbps International Bandwidth 512 kbps
NREN Network IP Resource IPv4 Address Space - 202.52.0.0/23 AS45170 IPV6 Address Space 2001:0d30:001d::/48 Hardware (Mostly, donated by NSRC) Routers - Cisco 7200 VXR NPE 400, 7200 (Donated by NSRC, University of Oregon) 2600s (Donated by NpIX). Switches - HP4000X Series (Donated by NSRC, University of Oregon), Cisco 2960. About 60 HP4000 will be shipping soon by NSRC, UOregon) Access Network - Cisco 1700s and Soekris routers Wireless (2.4 and 5.8 GHz) Radios
Health Applications Collaborating with National Health Research Center and Health Ministry for connecting all Nepalese Medical Institutes soon. Video and Audio communications via NREN Network to Model Hospital, Healthnet networks, Nepal Wireless Network and Rural Areas. Soon in Institute of Medicine/Tibhuwan University Nepal Medical College/Kathmandu University. Narrow the gap between rural health-posts and well-equipped urban hospitals Diagnosis and consultation with specialists at urban hospitals staying in the rural area for distance-learning Using mix of wireless and other available medium to connect remote area with NREN partners
Model Hospital General hospital in Kathmandu Run by non-profit PHECT Telemedicine Partner Hub for Wireless Networking Connected to NREN backbone through Fiber, Bandwidth of 10 ~ 20 mbps to Gaurishankar Community Hospital, Dolakha Connected over Wireless Consultation with Specialists
Current NREN Activity, IPVC H.323 in Model Hospital KTM to Dolka Hospital - ~100Km from KTM, 2008
Climate Change /Glacial Lake Monitoring: Field Server sensors network implemented in Glacial Lake, Himalaya. This research project done is as follows: Connect downstream villages with networking facilities for early warning system GLOF monitoring and enhance networking Install field server near high camp of island peak and ridge of the lake, Monitor environment: Temp, Co2, Humidity GPS and Water level measurement Field Server made by Prof. Hirafuji and Team @NARO/NARC, Tsukuba, Japan. Remote Sensor, equipped with environmental sensors, photographic camera and wireless radio. 5 Field Servers deployed in Everest region: 2 near Imja lake (5400m & 5100m) 2 in Namche Bazaar (3450m) 1 in SNP Headquarters (3500m) 2 in Kathmandu for testing and training purpose.(1355m), A Field Server is observing traffic condition in Kathmandu, equipped with High-resolution network camera
Recent Updates on Glacial Lake Monitoring Research: Optical Fibre 6 Core Single Mode- Namche to SNP laid, about 1Km for redundancy of connectivity. Altitude: 3400mtr~3700mtr and some Mesh Wireless devices deployed. Downtown Kathmandu live view and whether through FS.

Our Next Plan for Climate Changes Deploy more wireless enabled field stations Weather stations, sensor network, field servers. Build a network from Everest region to Dhaulagiri /Annapurna region to monitor changes happening between the six 8000m+ and several 7000m+ mountains in the region.
Mount Everest to Arnapurna Region, Dhaulagiri ~ 370 KM
