QUICK INSTALL GUIDE Billion 8500/8520/8501 VPN Firewall Bridge/Router Installation 1.1 Starting out: Before you can establish an Internet connection through your Billion 8500 VPN Firewall Bridge/Router make sure you have the following: 1. A Computer or Notebook with an installed Network Adaptor (sometimes called an Ethernet Adaptor, Network Card or NIC) 2. An SHDSL (sometimes called SDSL) service account and configuration information provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). You should need only a User Name and Password, but you can check with your ISP to see if you require any of the other following configuration parameters to connect your Billion 8500 VPN Firewall Bridge/Router to the Internet : 1.2 Steps for Connection: a. ISP User Name and Password b. VPI/VCI parameters c. Multiplexing Method d. Host and Domain Names e. ISP Domain Name Server ( DNS ) Address f. Fixed or Static IP Address. The following are the steps to properly connect your Billion 8500 VPN Firewall Bridge/Router: 1. Turn off your computer. 2. Connect the supplied ADSL RJ-11 cable from your master SDSL socket or SDSL enabled telephone socket to the LINE Port of your Billion 8500 VPN Firewall Bridge/Router. 3. Connect the Ethernet cable (RJ-45) from one of the Ethernet ports of your Billion 8500 VPN Firewall Bridge/Router to the Network Adaptor in your computer. 4. Connect the Power adaptor to the Billion 8500 VPN Firewall Bridge/Router and plug the other end into a Power outlet. Power up the unit. 5. Turn on your computer. Please allow up to 45 seconds for your Network Adaptor to locate the Router. 6. Now you are ready to configure the Billion 8500 VPN Firewall Bridge/Router. 7. Please note that your router should be pre-configured for the UK*. All you need to do is to follow the instructions that follow and enter your user name and password 3
as supplied by your Service Provider. No other changes should be necessary. * Standard UK settings are VPI 0, VCI 38, Encapsulation PPPoA, and Annex B for SHDSL. If the modem is not pre-configured for the UK, you will have to make changes to the VPI and VCI settings and check the Encapsulation. This can be done at Step 4 on the next page, and under Configuration. Please contact your Service Provider to confirm their configuration parameters. Screen shots in this QIG may vary slightly from the actual Router. 2.1 Configuration: 1. Open Internet Explorer or your default web browser and type http://192.168.1.254 on the address bar (where you would normally enter the web site address) as per the illustration below. 2. You will be presented with a user name and password prompt. Simply enter user name as admin, password as admin and click OK. This will take you to the modem s Status Page.* If the user name and password prompt box does not appear make sure that any firewall or anti-virus such as Zone Alarm or Norton is disabled. Also ensure that your Internet settings are correct. (In Internet Explorer go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections and make sure Never dial a Connection is checked. Then Click on the LAN settings and ensure Automatically detect settings is checked and all other fields are blank. Then go to Tools/Internet Options/Security and return your Security settings to default. ) 4
3. From the Menu on the left select Quick Start. 4. Under PPP add your user name and password as provided by your ISP (only change VPI and VCI settings and Encapsulation if necessary) and click Apply. 5
5. Click OK. 6. Now click the blue Save Config button. 6
7. Confirm by clicking Apply. 8. Click OK. 7
9. Now restart the router by clicking the blue Restart button 10. Confirm restart of the router by clicking Restart. 8
11. Wait for the router to finish the restart process. 12. Go to the Status Page which should now show a WAN IP address and your connection status under WAN. 9
13. This completes the initial configuration of the router and you can close down your browser or Logout. You should now be connected to your Service Provider.
