CHAPTER 1 Windows XP More Skills 12 Move Data Between Windows You can open several application windows at the same time; they do not need to be files created by the same program. Having more than one window open on a screen at the same time enables you to move information between the windows, even between different applications. To complete this activity, you will need the following files: x01_job_fair (Word file) x01_statistics (Excel file) You will save your document as: x01_job_fair_your_name 1. Turn on your computer and follow the logon instructions. If you are saving your work on a USB flash drive, be sure that it is inserted into your computer. Follow the website instructions to download the x01_job_fair and x01_statistics files from the website to your USB flash drive folder. 2. On the desktop, double-click the My Computer icon. In the toolbar, click the Folders button. In the Folders pane, navigate to the files for this activity. Locate and double-click the x01_job_fair file to open the Microsoft Word document. 3. In the taskbar, click the My Computer button. Locate and double-click the x01_statistics file to open the spreadsheet. 4. In the taskbar, right-click the My Computer button, and then click Close. Notice that only two windows are open, as shown in Figure 1. Click near the border of the Job Fair Attendance Growth chart to select it. The chart is selected if a light blue border with sets of dots displays around the edge of the chart. 6. Near the upper left corner of the window, click the Home tab. On the left end of the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click the Copy button. 7. In the taskbar, click the Microsoft Word button. Locate the paragraph that begins I am working. There are three blank lines between this paragraph and the next paragraph. 8. Move the pointer to the middle of the space below the paragraph, and then click one time to position the insertion point at the beginning of the middle blank line. On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click the Paste button. In an open area of the taskbar, right-click, and then from the shortcut menu, click Tile Windows Horizontally. Both open windows display on the screen. 10. In the document, scroll up as necessary to see the title Job Fair Attendance. Move the pointer to the title, click and hold down the left mouse button, and then drag down and to the right to select all of the table through the total for 2010, 25,892. 11. On the Home tab the one in the Ribbon in the bottom half of the screen in the Clipboard group, click the Copy button. Compare your screen with Figure 3. In the Microsoft Word title bar, click the Maximize button. Notice that the Microsoft Word Maximize button is different from the Windows XP Maximize button. 13. Use the vertical scroll bar to scroll down in the document until the paragraph that begins I think the following is near the top of the window. Just below this paragraph, click to position the insertion point at the beginning of the middle line of the three blank lines. 14. On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click the Paste button to paste the selected data into the document. Use the vertical scroll bar to display both the chart and the table, and then compare your screen with Figure 4. Figure 4 15. Scroll to the top of the document. In the FROM paragraph, click at the end of Name and then press B four times to delete the word. Type your name. 16. In the upper left corner of the screen, click the Office button, and then click Save As. Under Save in, click My Computer. Navigate to your XP Chapter 1 folder. In the File name box, change the file name to x01_job_fair_your_name and then at the bottom of the Save As dialog box, click Save. 17. Submit the document as directed. Exit Word.
