WRITING TEXT ON A HEART (for a Gearbubble Necklace) Hale Pringle 11/29/17 Version 1 This is a rough version of the steps involved. It goes along with a video where I walked through all the steps shown here. GETTING A SHAPE TO WORK WITH In this case, we are working to get a heart shape. The technique shown here will work with any Print On Demand Mock-up. We need a shape, but we only need to get it once. After that we can use it over and over. NOTE: I am providing a file for you that works with the Gearbubble Heart Shaped Necklaces. You won t even need to go through these steps. I am showing them so you can get your own shape if you are working on something other than the Gearbubble necklace. http://halepringle.com/black-heart STEP 1 CREATE A PRODUCT WITH A BLACK BACKGROUND AND SAVE IT. You will deactivate this product as soon as you have the shape. I didn t show it, but I got this by dragging a black square on top of the mock-up and saving the design. http://halepringle.com/black-heart You can use this for the Gearbubble Square necklaces too. Note; There is an article on HalePringle.com about uploading the cricle shape or the heart shape and then uploading a design on top of the black background. That doesn t get text around the edge, but it does allow you to take many existing designs and turn them into necklaces very quicly. Here is the cirlce http://halepringle.com/balck-circle

On the Sales page - Right click and save the image

Click on Save Image as Now we need to get rid of everything except the black inside of the heart. Open the image we saved in Photoshop Elements Either navigate to the file in the Windows File Explorer and right click on the image and use OPEN WITH Phtoshop Element 2018 or Click on FILE Open and navigate to the file, highlight it and click OPEN. Click on the CROP tool

#1 Set the Width to 3,000 pixels #2 Set the Height to 3,000 pixels. #3 - get the grid around just the heart area.

#1 move the crop area around (drag with mouse or use the cursor keys) Center the middle line right in the middle of the clasp. #2 Click the GREEN OK icon

The new Photoshop Element 2018 has a new tool called Background Eraser. #1 Click on the Eraser Tool. #2 - Click on the Background Eraser Version of the Tool #3 Make sure the CONTIGUOUS Button is clicked #4 Click on the area you want to get rid of.

#1 Change to the regular Eraser Tool Erase everything EXCEPT the black center area On the way. I noticed that the image is NOT uniformly total black. There is an area in the upper left corner that is black, just not completely black. We can use the paint bucket tool and drop black into the inner area and make sure all of it is total black.

#1 Choose the Paint Bucket or the Dropper Tool #2 Click on the small box that means Foreground color #3 - Enter 000000 (or just 0) into the color number #4 You can see the color we are going to get in this box #5 Click OK #1 Click on the paint bucket tool. #2 Click on the area you want your color to fill (in this case, the whole center of the heart) ADD A BACKGROUND LAYER SO WE CAN SEE.

White on Transparent is VERY hard to see and it is easy to leave some small spots that should have been erased. A way to make things much easier to see is to put a background color temporarily behind the area we are erasing. #1 Click on LAYER Menu option (above the screen shot) #2 Click on New Fill Layer #3 Click on SOLID COLOR A small pup-up allows you to change the name of the new layer. I usually don t bother. Then a pop-up appears that lets you pick a color.

#1 Click on the color area you want in the slider #2 Click on the large box the color you want #3 Check in the small box that this is the color you actually want #3 Click on OK #1 Often the new layer will be in front of you existing layers totally blocking them from view.

#2 You can see this in the Layer Panel. The solid red box is at the top of the list indicating that it is in front #3 We want to use the mouse and drag the layer down. If you look closely you can see where that drag is in process. (You can also right click and chose to move a layer Backward or To the Back ) #4 You want the fill layer at the bottom of the layer stack. #1 The color layer is now at the bottom. #2 You can see that the red fill layer is behind the heart and you can see the small areas that still need to be erase. NOTE: If you try and erase right now, we would be erasing the background red fill layer. We need to click on the heart layer or the heart to make the heart layer the one we are working on. Now the erasing would erase the pieces of the heart image we don t want. FINAL PRODUCT

Save this file somewhere safe. You can use it over and over.

STEP 2 - WRITING TEXT AROUND THE AREA #1 Start with the Magic Selection Tool #2 I just moved the mouse around the heart. Close to it, but not trying to carefully and exactly outline the heart. The Magic Tool will see that there is an edge close by and will move to that edge. #3 We can see what we call the Crawling Ants a dash line that appears to be moving around the heart #4 We also have crawling ants around the whole frame. This means that the area selected is the area outside the heart. We want the area INSIDE the heart.

#1 click on the SELECTION Menu option (off the screen) #2 Click on INVERSE Now the Crawling Ants will only be around the heart

Now the ants are crawling around the heart. We could put our text around the selected area right now. We DO NOT want to do that. The letter protruding above and beside the heart change its basic shape and it won t fit into the POD Company s mock-up. We need the letter INSIDE our shape.

#1 Click on the SELECTION Menu option (off the screenshot) #2 Click on Modify #3 Click on Contract

#1 Tell it how many pixels to contract #2 Click on OK

I went in 160 pixels and got this screen. You can see that the Crawling Ants are now inside the heart.

#1 Click on the TEXT Tool #2 Click on the TEXT ON SELECTION TOOL

Usually you select an area with the Text tool. #1 If we click inside the Selected Area we tell the Text Tool that this is the Selection Area we want to work with. #2 Click on the GREEN OK icon Click where you want to start typing text. You will need to fiddle with text size and color.

Fiddle with it. You can see that the T in Totally is around the corner from the rest of the letters. NOTE: I ve found that if you want to add a second line of text, you need to go to the layer panel and HIDE the existing line. Things tend to SNAP to the existing selection area or text area if you don t. NOTE: my text should probably have been bigger on this sample.

Open a second image #1 - Open the Image Tray at the bottom of the screen. (there is a box on the extreme left bottom corner. Click on it.) #2 Drag the second image into the current image and resize and position it. SAVE AS A PHOTOSHOP FILE - CLICK ON FILE SAVE and save your design as a PSD file. This will preserve the layers. You can come back and edit the file later. SAVE AS A PNG FILE - Click on FILE Save As

#1 FILE Menu option (off the screenshot) #2 SAVE AS

#1 click on File Type drop-down menu #2 Choose PNG #3 Click SAVE

#1 Click on Smallest/Slow this will be the most compressed version of the file Since PNG file compress without losing any information, this will save a little slower, but every pixel in our editing image is saved perfectly. The SAVE FOR WEB converts the file from 300 DPI to 72 DPI and does its best to make the file as small as possible without losing too much information. It is possible that what it comes up with would result in a pixilated design on a large shirt. #2 Click on NONE #3 Click on OK We have a design Let s check what it looks like

I launched a new campaign in Gearbubble and uploaded the design to the Necklace product. #1 You may need to turn off the Snap to Center option. #2 Enlarge and move and it should fit perfectly. There you have it, a heart shaped necklace with text around the edges.
