Product Overview The NEC Express5800/140Hb server is ideal for mission-critical and e-commerce applications, including large database, on-line transaction processing and intensive messaging. It is intended for growing companies that need high performance, high availability and easy expandability at an affordable price. The Express5800/140Hb takes advantage of advanced Pentium III Xeon processors, with 1 or 2MB of L2 cache. Built on a 100Mhz front-side bus, its four-way processor and triple-bus PCI architecture provide superior performance and I/O throughput. The Express5800/140Hb server provides easy expandability, with a maximum of 16GB ECCprotected SDRAM memory (16 DIMM sockets), a maximum of 10 hot-swap disk drives and 8 PCI slots (including 6 x 64-bit). The embedded Ultra160 SCSI controller, Ultra160 disk drives and highperformance Ultra2 RAID boards provide outstanding throughput and top levels of performance, with transfer rates up to 160MBps. The Express5800/140Hb offers many high-availability features, such as redundant hot-swap power supplies and fans, hot-swap disk drives and hot-swap PCI slots 1. It is available in either a tower or a rack-mount (7U) form factor. Designed for easy installation and manageability, the Express5800/140Hb comes standard with ExpressBuilder setup and configuration software, updated for seamless O/S installation and ESMPRO management software. It also incorporates unique integrated remote-management capabilities to help lower the Total Cost of Ownership. Our Build-to-Order capability (BTO) allows the Express5800/140Hb to be ready for immediate installation, right up to the optional pre-loading of Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 or Windows 2000. Key Features and Benefits Intel Pentium III Xeon Processor The Express5800/140Hb server can support up to 4 Pentium III Xeon processors, for robust system performance. The advanced Pentium III Xeon processors feature 1MB or 2MB of ECC on-die L2 cache. Enhanced System Architecture The Express5800/140Hb uses the ServerSet III HE chipset from ServerWorks, offering enhanced processor speeds for multiprocessor server environments and expandability for future Pentium III Xeon processors. This chipset is a proven technology that increases the flexibility of system design for processor, memory and PCI configurations. It allows increased throughput and overall performance through the 100MHz front-side bus. The Express5800/140Hb uses the ServerSet III HE chipset from ServerWorks, offering enhanced processor speeds for multiprocessor server environments and expandability for future Pentium III Xeon processors. This chipset is a proven technology that increases the flexibility of system design for processor, memory and PCI configurations. It allows increased throughput and overall performance through the 100MHz front-side bus. The Express5800/140Hb server offers 16 DIMM sockets for industry-standard 64MB 1, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB SDRAM DIMMs with a 4-way interleaved memory organization. The server allows easy expansion for memory-intensive environments, with scalability up to 16GB. High-Performance Disks and Flexible Storage Configurations The Express5800/140Hb offers up to two cages (one standard, one optional), each housing 5 x 1" front-accessible hot-swap disk drives, for a total internal capacity of 360GB 1. Each HDD cage comes with its own SCSI backplane. The Express5800/140Hb support the latest disk drives with Ultra160 SCSI technology (7,200rpm or 10Krpm), giving data rates of up to 160MBps for maximum throughput. The Express5800/140Hb server also offers 4 media bays: one 3.5 bay occupied by a floppy drive, one 5.25 bay occupied by a 40X maximum variable speed EIDE CD-ROM drive, and 2 x 5.25 bays free for other media devices. Integrated Controllers The Express5800/140Hb system board features an integrated dual-channel SCSI controller, providing Ultra160 SCSI interfaces for the support of Ultra160 hard-disk drives, and an integrated single-channel Wide Ultra SCSI for the support of media SCSI devices (DAT and DLT). It also provides an integrated Enhanced IDE channel for the connection of the 40X maximum variable speed CD-ROM. The Express5800/140Hb system board includes a 10/100Mbps network controller (based on the Intel 82559 Fast Ethernet PCI bus controller), to optimize server performance and provide near immediate network readiness. As a 32-bit PCI bus master, the controller can burst data at up to 132Mbps. The controller contains two receive and transmit FIFO buffers designed to prevent data overruns or underruns while waiting for access to the PCI bus. It can also auto-detect and auto-switch for 10 or 100Mbps network speeds and supports Wake-on-LAN. The Express5800/140Hb supports the auto-sensing Intel PRO/100+ server adapter. The server also supports a Gigabit Ethernet board as an option, to boost network performance to 1,000Mbps. The Express5800/140Hb has an integrated ATI Rage IIC 64-bit, high-performance SVGA subsystem that supports 4MB of 10ns onboard SGRAM (Synchronous Graphics Memory) and resolutions up to 1280 x 1024, allowing high-quality image display. The system comes standard with two 450W power supplies. A third power supply is optional for redundancy. Each power supply supports PFC (power factor correction), and comes with its own AC cord for better reliability. ESMPRO Software and Integrated Remote Management The Express5800/140Hb includes the ESMPRO Management Suite, which allows network administrators to monitor, control and manage Express5800 servers and desktops across a network from a management console or any PC with an Internet browser. The ESMPRO Management Suite enables local or remote management (via your network or the Web) comprehensive real-time fault management performance and load monitoring broad configuration and asset management It allows system administrators to optimize server operations through an easy-to-use Windows -based graphical user interface. ESMPRO comes with SNMP agents for Microsoft Windows and Novell NetWare environments accommodating all Express5800 servers. Plug-in applications are also available to integrate Express5800 systems with leading enterprise and network managers, such as HP OpenView NNM for Windows, Tivoli Enterprise, CA Unicenter TNG or Bull OpenMaster (AIX). ESMPRO Alert Manager comes with traps for APC s UPS management software (PowerChute Plus), providing a single management console view of the server and the AC power system. The Express5800/140Hb features hardware-integrated remote-management capabilities implemented through the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) and RomPilot (extended BIOS). This built-in solution provides remote emergency access and control of server resources (via LAN or standard modem connection) from a Management Workstation Application (MWA), allowing critical actions such as remote power control, remote event log access or remote console redirection, regardless of the state of the operating system or the network.
