Checking the status of Sophos for Windows You can tell if Sophos has successfully installed by seeing if there is a blue and white shield system tray, (usually located in the bottom right of the screen, near the clock). in the You may need to restart your computer to see this. It is best to restart your computer, even if you can see the shield straight away, as Sophos frequently needs the computer to reboot before enabling all features. To view the shield, probably hidden on Windows 7 systems, you will need to click on the up-arrow near the clock. Sophos should be working correctly so long as the shield is blue and white. However, to protect yourself against malware discovered since building of the installation package, you still need to update it as described below. Sophos generally pops up status messages from the shield to alert you to problems, as well as to confirm that Sophos is running properly. For example, when your computer starts up you may see a message telling you that it s enabling all protection. Updating Sophos for Windows for the first time Although the shield shows that Sophos is installed and running properly you still need to update it immediately so that it can identify the most recent viruses. Make sure that your computer has Internet connection available before you update Sophos for Windows.
Right click on the Sophos icon in the task bar and a small pop-up box will appear, click on Update now. Sophos will begin to download files and will show you a downloading screen, as shown below. Ignore the reference to Windows 2000+ as this is a Sophos term. Sophos will automatically install these files onto your system, once all the necessary files have downloaded.
The installation screen will automatically close once the files have installed successfully. The Sophos icon in the task bar should be visible and blue, and any progress boxes will close indicating that the update is complete. Sophos updates automatically every hour from this point on. You won't see the downloading screen during these automatic updates. Once installed Sophos should automatically check files that you open for viruses. To find out when the program last updated itself, hover your mouse over the Sophos icon in the task bar and you should see a small pop-up window showing the date and time of the last update: When the program is in the process of updating itself you the pop-up window will look a little different. If Sophos finds new updates it will automatically download and install them.
If you see a red circle with a white cross superimposed on the blue and white shield (see below), the most recent update failed. This will always happen (and is normal) if Sophos tries to update while your computer is disconnected from the Internet. Support and further information As mentioned above ACU is unable to provide technical support for employees regarding the installation of Sophos Home Use editions. However, Sophos provide some user guides which you may wish to consult to assist with any troubleshooting.
