Short term market opportunities in Italy Focus on smart metering Mass market volumes 22M 15M 37M TBD Gas Water Electricity Other (e.g. district heating) Italian regulatory AEEGSI has planned a rollout of 11M gas meters by end 2018 Smart meters should be remote read and managed using two-way radio communication between the meter and the Utilities central system. Currently TIM is providing 2G M2M SIM and running pilot projects based on WMBus 169MHz communication AEEGSI is going to regulate also other smart metering use cases Several consultations have been carried out 4

NB-IoT is suitable not only for smart meters Other possible use cases: Smart Waste Smart Light Smart Green (city parks) City Environment Quality Mobile Crowdsensing System Smart Parking (loading/unloading bays) Asset Tracking Data rate it paves the wave towards 5G xmbb xmbb - Extreme Mobile Broadband mmtc - Massive Machine-Type Communication umtc - Ultra-reliable MTC 5G services umtc mmtc Latency/Reliability Number of devices 11
Takeaway NB-IoT enables the LTE cellular networks to offer IoT solutions in a reliable and secure way, reusing existing network asset based on global 3GPP standard NB-IoT is suitable for a subset of IoT use cases (low bandwidth, non delay sensitive, small packet, deep coverage, low power, low cost) There are short term market opportunities (e.g. smart metering) Collective effort (operators, vendors, developers, regulators, ) is important in order to enlarge the ecosystem NB-IoT paves the wave towards 5G (mmtc - Massive Machine-Type Communication) 12
