Homework #1: SSH Due WEEK 3 at the BEGINNING of lab CSE 3, Spring 2018 A. The program Some students had trouble using this program in the past. It isn t too bad if you just take a few minutes to read and understand what you are doing. From the start button (lower left hand corner) type Secure. Then click on the Secure Shell File Transfer Client. B. The window. You ve seen this before in Lab1. You ll mainly be dealing with just the Quick Connect button as shown in class The left hand side window labeled Local to your Computer is basically all the files that is on the computer that you are working on right now. (Be it your laptop or the school lab computer) You ll notice that if you click on Libraries Documents in this window pane, you ll get the same files and folders when you click on Start Documents. This is what we mean by local to your computer. C. Connecting to your Server Click quick connect and a window will pop up asking for some info. Leave the port number alone and type in the host name shown below and your UCSD email login.
Step 2: Click on connect or hit enter to pop up a password box and type in your password then hit enter or click OK. Step 3: You should see that the right side now has the folder public_html from lab 1.
D. Dealing with files. Create a new folder on your local computer in Documents named CSE3 with ALL CAPS and NO SPACES!! There are two ways to do this: 1) Click on the new folder button at the top that is local to your computer. 2) Right click the mouse and select New => Folder Step 2: Double click on the Libraries folder from the SSH window pane that s Local to your computer then click on Documents. You should see the newly created folder CSE3 as well as your index.html file. Now you should have something that looks like this. (You may have additional files if you saved some from other classes.)
E. Transfering files. We re pretty much setup already to transfer some files now. This is pretty important, so hopefully you ll remember to do this every time. Double click on public_html on the right side of SSH which is, On the server or Internet You should see another copy of your index.html. o This is the index.html you can see on your website as shown in Lab 1. o http://acsweb.ucsd.edu/~ Step 2: Click and drag the CSE3 Folder into the white space (indicated below) of the right window pane. (Notice no spaces. If you put spaces you ll have to rename it without the space just right-click on the CSE3 folder then click on rename) You should see something like this. (Without that White Space!! text below of course)
Step 3: Now what you should do is update again your index.html file to include something else. Use Notepad++ to edit your index.html o It can be something simple as this is the new text for homework 1 It s just something to indicate that you ve added something else from Lab 1. Be creative if you want. Next create a new file hw1.html. Please use this exact name. o Save this inside your CSE3 folder o Using what you ve learned so far from Lab1 create another html page. o This can be anything as well. Just make sure your hw1.html file has to look different from your index.html file, using the basic html skeleton, and it s viewable on Chrome. o At a minimum you should have the following tags (and the closing counterparts) and some text: <html> <head> <title> <body> <font> Step 4: Now click on the index.html from the left side and drag it into the white space to the right side. Click on the CSE3 folder and drag into the whitespace. Whenever you re prompted to Overwrite, click on Yes to All.
Step 5: To verify you ve done things correctly, you can open the CSE3 folder on the server/internet side of SSH (the right window pane) and you should be able to see your hw1.html file there as well. What you did was basically copy the hw1.html from your local computer onto the server. This is important to know because we ll be doing this in subsequent labs. Can you figure out how to view your hw1.html file on the Internet? Homework Checkoff: Demonstrate to the person checking you off that you know how to use this program. He/she will ask you questions and also check to see if you ve done things correctly by checking the contents of files on your server. Do not leave until you have received TWO emails (Lab and Homework) from autograder.
