The Safety Tips Instead of worrying about the details of the threats let s focus on the TIPS to stay safe!
Tip 1 Use an Anti-Virus Program Constantly monitors your computer Protects you from o Email attachment viruses/malware o Virus/Malware laden download files o Virus/Malware infected flash drives Important o Make sure virus definitions are being updated o Must renew your subscription each year
Step 1 Use an Anti-Virus Program Commercial (Pay-For) examples: o Bitdefender Anti-Virus Plus 2017 o Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2017 o McAfee Anti-Virus Plus 2017 Free examples o AVG free.avg.com o AVAST Avast.com Security Suites include additional protection such as link pre-scans, firewalls, and backup software.
Tip 2 Turn on a Firewall A firewall blocks outside hacker attacks (port-sniffers) Windows includes a FREE one o Just make sure it s turned on (Control Panel) o NOTE: Some Internet Security Suites that include a firewall take over for the Windows Firewall.
Tip 3 Do Windows Updates Microsoft pushes updates to Windows to you on the 2 nd Tuesday of each month. o They fix security holes that hackers attempt to exploit In Windows 10 it will automatically happen! In Windows 7 you should check the Control Panel DANGER: Windows XP no longer gets updates and so Do NOT leave it connected to the Net
Tip 4 Keep Other Web-related Software Up-To-Date Adobe Reader Adobe Flash Java o Search Configure Java Your Browser o Typically, go to About to check for updates You ll see a notice in your taskbar tray area when an update is available

Tip 5 Be Cautious of Bogus Web Page Alerts Don t be fooled by pop-ups that ask you to download/install something o Please Update Your Software o You are infected, click for a free scan

Tip 6 Be wary of Phishing Email Phishing Emails attempt to get you to click a link and visit a bogus web site. o Typically a fake email that looks like it s from a legitimate site. o Asks you to click a link in the email to visit the site and update your personal information. o What you re REALLY doing is giving the BAD GUYS your personal information. Best Advice NEVER click links in emails from unknown senders
Tip 6 Be wary of Phishing Email Example
Tip 7 Use Strong Passwords Create passwords that are not vulnerable to brute-force attacks. o At least 8 characters long o No real words or strings of words o Combination of letters, numbers, special characters Suggestion o Pick a favorite phrase or lyric o Use the first letter of each word o Change any letter you can to a number ( L = 1, S = 5, O = zero, etc.) o Add your favorite number and a special character on each end Example: Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh 3*0wfiitri0h053*
Tip 7 Use Strong Passwords You can also use a password manager o You install the manager on your computer and setup ONE very good password for it. o It Keeps track of all your logins / passwords for you across multiple devices, including smartphones and tablets o LastPass FREE - lastpass.com o Dashlane FREE dashlane.com o Sticky Password 29.95 stickypassword.com
Tip 8 Shop Securely When you shop online, make sure you enter your private information on a secure page. How do you know? o Look for HTTPS:// instead of just HTTP:// o Look for a padlock icon on the address bar
