Fantom-X6/X7/X8 Audio Track Expansion system program (Ver. 2.1) This system program updates the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 Audio Track Expansion system program to the latest version. * This program is only for Fantom-X6/X7/X8 Audio Track Expansion (Ver. 2.xx). It cannot be used for the Ver. 1.xx Fantom-X6/X7/X8. * If you want to upgrade your Ver. 1.xx Fantom-X6/X7/X8 to the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 Audio Track Expansion, you must separately purchase the Audio Track Expansion Kit (FAN-X-UP1) and update it to Ver. 2.00 before using this program. * This program is not necessary if your Fantom-X6/X7/X8 is running Ver. 2.1 or later. Main features Newly added Piano mode specifically for SRX-12 Classic EPs A new dedicated Piano mode has been added to support the SRX-12 Classic EPs expansion board, which contains high-quality sounds for popular electric pianos and clavi. If the SRX-12 is installed, the two screens Classic EP and Classic Clav will be added, allowing you to use a simple and intuitive graphic user interface to adjust the tone. Newly added Solo with FX Sampling function The newly added Solo with FX Mode function lets you apply the internal MFX while sampling when you perform solo sampling. Newly added Audio Recording mode Now you can also use Solo with FX Mode when recording an audio track. In addition, Audio Rec Channel now allows monaural recording as well. Support for motion dive.tokyo Console (V-LINK) The V-LINK screen now has added parameters for controlling the MD-P1, a dedicated console for the motion dive.tokyo Performance Package (MD-P1-S) VJ performance system. Updating the system program You can perform the update in either of two ways; USB update or CARD update. To ensure that your Fantom- X6/X7/X8 will be updated correctly, please be sure to read the material below. * If you perform the USB update, the entire contents of user memory will be erased. You must back up your user data before you proceed. (Fantom-X6/X7/X8 owner s manual, p.235) * After you perform the CARD update, you must delete the update file from the memory card. If you leave the update file on the card, the usable space on the card will be diminished accordingly. * Never power-off your Fantom-X6/X7/X8 while the update is in progress. Before you start, check the system program version of your Fantom-X6/X7/X8. Checking the system program version Press [Menu] [System] [Enter] [F4 (Info)], and then press [F2 ()] three times. Note the Version indication in the lower right of the Version Information screen. * If this shows the latest version (Version 2.1 or later), there s no need to update your Fantom-X6/X7/X8. What you ll need in order to update your Fantom-X6/X7/X8 In order to update the system program of your Fantom-X6/X7/X8, you ll need the following tools. In order to update using a USB connection Fantom-X6/X7/X8 A computer running one of the following operating systems Windows Me/2000/XP or later Mac OS 9.04 or later (including Mac OS X) USB cable * If you perform the update via USB, the entire contents of user memory will be erased. If necessary, you must back up the user memory before you proceed. (Fantom-X6/X7/X8 owner s manual, p.235) In order to update using a CARD Fantom-X6/X7/X8 A computer running one of the following operating systems Windows Me/2000/XP or later Mac OS 9.04 or later (including Mac OS X) A card reader/writer that s compatible with your computer A memory card (SmartMedia or CompactFlash of 1 GB or smaller size, with at least 32 MB of free space) PC card adaptor 2

Cautions when performing the update (Important!) Before you perform the USB update, you must save all user data to a memory card. All data in your Fantom-X6/X7/X8 will be lost when you perform the USB update. * You must perform the user backup operation before the update operation. (Fantom-X6/X7/X8 owner s manual, p.235) Never transmit this update data to any product other than the Fantom-X6/X7/X8. This update data may destroy the data or system program of another product. If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 will become unable to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact a Roland service center if this occurs. We regret that we are unable to answer questions regarding the update procedure using this system program. Please perform the update on your own responsibility, following the directions given in this document. Procedure for updating via USB Follow the steps given below to update the system program of your Fantom-X6/X7/X8. If you want to perform the update using a card, refer to Procedure for updating via CARD (p. 5). When you perform the USB update, the entire contents of the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 s user memory will be lost. If necessary, execute a User Backup before you proceed. (Fantom-X6/X7/X8 owner s manual, p.235) Never power-off the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 while the backup is in progress. Doing so may render the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 s system unable to start up normally. Before you perform the USB update, set the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 s System setting USB Mode to STORAGE. (Fantom-X6/X7/ X8 owner s manual, p.218) Preparations Before you power-on the Fantom-X6/X7/X8, use a USB cable to connect your computer to the Fantom-X6/X7/X8. Then power-on the Fantom-X6/X7/X8. Insert the included Fantom-X6/X7/X8 Audio Track Expansion System Update CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. Entering USB UPDATE mode 1. Press [Menu]. 2. Move the cursor to System and press [Enter]. 3. Press [F4 (Info)]. 4. Use [F1 ( )] and [F2 ()] to access the Version Information screen. 5. Press [F3 (Setup)] once. 6. Press [F4 (Info)] once. 7. Successively press [SHIFT] -> [F7] -> [F8] -> [F7] -> [F8] to access the UPDATE MODE screen. 8. Press [F1 (USB)] to access the Program Update Mode (USB) screen. 3

Executing the update via USB 1. Press [Enter]; the display will indicate Initializing User Area, and the entire contents of user memory will be erased. After a time, a USB connection between your computer and the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 will be established automatically, and the display will indicate Importing Update File. At this time, verify that the [USB STATUS] area indicates Connected. and that the [MESSAGE] area indicates Please, Drag Update File. (fanx2.bin -> [USB Disk]). The Fantom-X6/X7/X8 drive will appear as follows on the screen of your computer. Windows users: Removable disk or FANX USER Macintosh users: FANX USER 2. From the Roland folder of the CD-ROM drive, drag the fanx2.bin update file onto the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 drive to copy it. [USB STATUS] will indicate Receiving.. and the update file will begin being copied to the Fantom-X6/X7/X8. (This will take approximately three minutes.) Copy only the fanx2.bin file. Don t copy the entire Roland folder. Even after the progress bar on your computer has disappeared, don t break the USB connection as long as the Fantom-X6/X7/ X8 itself shows a [USB STATUS] indication of Receiving.. or while [MESSAGE] indicates Waiting.. 3. When [MESSAGE] indicates Please, Disconnect From PC Side. And then, Push [Exit]., the copy has been completed. Disconnect the USB connection using the appropriate method described below. Windows users: Use the device eject button shown in the taskbar. Macintosh users: Drag the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 drive icon into the trash. 4. Press [Exit]. The screen will automatically proceed through the following indications as the update is performed. Format Check of Update File Initializing Program/Preset Area Updating Program (Please wait.) Processing Factory Reset Completed. Please, PowerOff. The received update file is being checked to verify that it is valid. Program memory is being initialized. The update is being performed. A factory reset is being executed. The update has been completed. 5. When the update has been completed successfully, the display will indicate Completed. Please, PowerOff. Turn the power off, and then on again. Verifying that the update was successful Press [Menu] [System] [Enter] [F4 (Info)], and then press [F2 ()] three times. Verify that the Version Information screen indicates Version 2.10. 4

Procedure for updating via CARD Follow the steps given below to update the system program of your Fantom-X6/X7/X8. If you want to perform the update via a USB connection, refer to Procedure for updating via USB (p. 3). If the update via CARD is completed successfully, the contents of the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 s user memory will remain. However for safety s sake, we recommend that you perform a user backup before you proceed with the update. (Fantom-X6/X7/X8 owner s manual, p.235) Never power-off the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 while the update is in progress. Doing so may render the Fantom-X6/X7/X8 unable to start up normally. Preparations Use your computer and card reader/writer to copy the update file (fanx2.bin) from the Roland folder on the included Fantom-X6/X7/X8 Audio Track Expansion System Update CD-ROM to the root directory of your memory card in a folder structure of \Roland\fanx2.bin Make sure that your Fantom-X6/X7/X8 is powered-off. Then insert your memory card (containing the update file as described above) into the PC CARD slot of the Fantom-X6/X7/X8, and then power-on the Fantom-X6/X7/X8. Entering CARD UPDATE mode 1. Press [Menu]. 2. Move the cursor to System and press [Enter]. 3. Press [F4 (Info)]. 4. Use [F1 ( )] and [F2 ()] to access the Version Information screen. 5. Press [F3 (Setup)] once. 6. Press [F4 (Info)] once. 7. Successively press [SHIFT] -> [F7] -> [F8] -> [F7] -> [F8] to access the UPDATE MODE screen. 8. Press [F2 (CARD)] to access the Program Update Mode (CARD) screen.
