Version 1.0 Introduction 1. Introduction These release notes provide information on the features and issues related to the Mellanox 40Gb/s InfiniBand Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter version 1.0.0. 2. Related Documentation For additional information, refer to the following documents: IBM BladeCenter H Type 8852 Installation and User's Guide IBM BladeCenter: Management Module User s Guide Mellanox 40Gb InfiniBand Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter Installation Manual, P/N: DOC-00618 3. HSSM Overview The 40Gb InfiniBand Switch Module provides InfiniBand QDR connectivity between the server platform s high performance blade servers and external InfiniBand fabrics in non-blocking designs all on a single device. Mellanox s high speed module also accommodates performance optimized fabric designs utilizing a single BladeCenter chassis or stacking multiple BladeCenter chassis without requiring an external InfiniBand switch. Providing 14 internal ports that are connected to the blades (HSECs) and 16 external ports, Voltaire s high speed switch module provides full connectivity for 14 blades installed in the BladeCenter chassis. The switch module also ensures an upgrade path from SDR to DDR and DDR to QDR because it negotiates data rates automatically. 4. HSSM Main Features Highest performing I/O option in IBM BladeCenter Up to 40Gb/s performance for scale-out computing fabrics and cloud environments QDR/DDR/SDR auto-negotiation with the High Performance InfiniBand Switch Module Ultra low latency: under 100 nanoseconds blade to blade connectivity Unique HyperScale architecture allows scaling to thousands of nodes with a single tier of switches Built-in high availability Ideal for scientific, commercial HPC and enterprise applications Full support for copper and fiber cabling solutions Complemented by Mellanox s market leading Grid Director switches and Unified Fabric Manager (UFM) software 4
40Gb/s InfiniBand Switch Module (HSSM) for IBM BladeCenter Release Notes Version 1.0 5. System Requirements HSSM Firmware/Software Revision InfiniScale IV Firmware: 7.2.218 Software revision: 1.0.0, build 1.0.0 CPLD revision: Ver 8 6. Firmware Upgrade When Technical Support releases a 40Gb/s InfiniBand Switch Module firmware update, you can update the module with the new firmware. NOTE: To update the 40Gb/s InfiniBand Switch Module firmware, the module must be enabled (in power ON state). To update new firmware to the 40Gb/s InfiniBand Switch Module: Step 1 Start a GUI session by browsing to the BladeCenter H AMM using the AMM IP address. Step 2 In the AMM window, under I/O Module Tasks (left pane), click Firmware Update; the Firmware Update window opens. Step 3 On the target multiple list, select the bay that you want to update. Step 4 Under the Images table, select the type of firmware that you want to update. Step 5 Enter the new firmware file name, by typing it or by using the browse button to select it. Step 6 Click Update and follow the wizard. Step 7 After waiting a few moments for file transfer and burning of the new image, the update is completed. Step 8 Restart the 40Gb/s InfiniBand Switch Module to activate the new image. 7. Known Issues This section asserts the known issues in this version. # Module/Feature Description 1 Fault LED behavior In case of over-temperature and when the temperature is back to normal, the Fault LED is not turning off. The AMM GUI shows the correct information and the issue is only with the LED behavior. 5
Version 1.0 Known Issues # Module/Feature Description This is a software limitation that will be fixed in a future software release. 2 Firmware Update In rare cases, during the firmware update process, a false message appears stating that the update failed although the update ended successfully ("Error occurred while processing firmware. Try again later."). You can verify whether the update succeeded by running a version show command (This is a false alarm in the AMM system). 3 GUID information HSSM GUID is missing on the AMM I/O module tasks Admin/Power/Restart screen 6
