HP Storage Summit 2013 Step into the future Converged storage for the next era of IT HP Tier 1 Business Continuity Insuring data availability and uptime with HP XP solutions Karen van Warmerdam/ July 3, 2013

Why business continuity is critical for your organization

The Challenge: Assuring data availability, no matter what happens Challenges System component failure causing system outages or data unavailability Online systems and data center upgrades Man made and natural disasters Mission-critical applications must have access to their data at all times 5

What is the impact of downtime? Financial performance: Revenue recognition, cash flow, credit rating, stock price, regulatory fines Damaged reputation: Customers, competitors gain advantage, suppliers, financial markets, business partners $ Impact $ Billions Exponential increase Constant increase Productivity: Number employee x impacted x hours out x burdened hours =? Revenue: Direct loss, compensatory payment, lost future revenues, billing losses and investment losses $ Millions Minutes Time Days Indirect impacts of downtime are severe and unpredictable 6

Business Continuity Vectors

Business Continuity Vectors Business Continuity Planning What needs to be considered for data center operations? Processes Facility management and integrity, including power generation People What needs to be considered for data? Single System Resiliency Local Data backups Remote backup copies Online local copies or snapshots Online remote copies Dual or Three site disaster recovery 8

Business Continuity Solutions Fault-Tolerant Disaster Tolerant Solutions 3 Data Center (3DC) Local and Remote Clustering Business Critical Rapid Backup Solutions Operational Infrastructure and Enterprise Backup Solutions Remote Replication Local Replication Solutions Data Protection Solutions HP Services 9 Days Hours Minutes Recovery Time

Application Replication Metric Decision Criteria Two hi level metrics key to determine a solution continuity service level Recovery Point Objective (RPO) A measure of how much data can be lost when a failover occurs from one site to the other. Typically measured in # of transactions. Near-zero for synchronous, but typically >0 for asynchronous replication. Requirements dictate key aspects of replication Synchronous and Asynchronous capabilities Purchased bandwidth and TELCO performance/reliability # of Links Nature of data being replicated Recovery Time Objective (RTO) A measure of how much time can be taken for a given failover operation. Is a function of how the entire server/san/storage solution works. 10

Single System Resiliency and Availability Single system criteria for business continuity Redundancy throughout Fully redundant hardware: cache, ports, controllers, power system, etc Online Upgrades with no impact to performance or response times Ability to do online software, firmware and hardware upgrades without impacting production systems. 11

Solution: XP P9500 six nines availability Always on You can t afford to shut down for any kind of failure or maintenance The XP P9500 Disk Array has six nines hardware availability from complete component redundancy All components can be replaced online Online firmware upgrade all firmware upgrades are done online, even for single connect hosts Microprocessors are arranged in pairs, where one can take over all functions of the pair while the other updates Bulletproof test 12

Solution: XP P9500 replication solutions Provide continuous access to your data despite disaster Local and long distance array-to-array replication Clustering solutions tightly integrated with server clustering Three Data Center Solutions (3DC) to keep your business online no matter what happens 13

Local Replication Use of Clones and Snapshots Host Local Copies and Snaps for Quick Recovery Full clones of local storage keep production volumes backed up for recoverability and to maintain performance. Snapshots allow for quick recoverability to a point in time by storing only the data that has changed. Secondary volume Primary volume Secondary volume Async. updates Secondary volume 14

XP Local Replication XP Business Copy and Snapshot 6 th Generation of XP Business Copy Nine copies of the same volume across 2 tiers, while each copy relationship can be administered independently. New Copy after Write: XP Fast Snap Over 1000 snapshots of the same volume 15

Remote Replication Short and Long Distance Replication Provide Continuous Access to Your Data Despite Disaster Synchronous remote replication maintains an offsite backup of your production volumes that are never behind your production volumes. Suitable only for relatively short distance but provides recoverability at the data center level and allows for no differences between volumes at the two sites. Zero RPO Asynchronous remote replication maintains an offsite backup of your production volumes that are time wise slightly behind your production volumes in order to maintain recoverability in the case of regional disasters. This allows a business to maintain recoverability to a site that is much further away from the main data center. 16

High Availability Failover Local or Remote Transparent Failover Access to your data despite system failures Two arrays used at a local site or two geographically close sites where the host will transparently fail from one to the other in cases of array/infrastructure failures. Cluster solutions provide seamless, automatic failover and facilitate failback 17

XP P9500 clustering solutions XP Clustering solutions Coordinated failover of servers and storage Seamless integration of remote mirroring with industry-leading heterogeneous server clustering HP-UX ServiceGuard clusters ServiceGuard for Linux VERITAS Cluster Server on Solaris HACMP on AIX Cluster Cluster extension Metro cluster Continental cluster Microsoft Cluster Service on Windows NonStop, OVMS clusters Data Mirror Cluster extension for VMware and Windows XP P9500 Continuous access XP P9500 18

Solution: XP P9500 complex disaster recovery Three data center Disaster Recovery solutions Keep your business online, no matter what happens, using three data centers XP P9500 and XP disk arrays on two sites replicate data synchronously, while the XP P9500/XP on a third site many miles away protects against a regional disaster that hits the first two Lose any of the sites and the other two sites keep supporting your business without interruption Site 1 Site 2 Site 3 19

What is a 3DC Cascaded solution? host Site 1 Sync same staff Site 2 current Cross country/continental distance journal replication Protect against both Local and regional disasters Push button failover available Data consistency guaranteed Campus/metropolitan distance synchronous replication Minimized performance impact to application Fast automated failover during local disasters (using the same IT staff) Data currency guaranteed Site 3 a little behind 20

What is a 3DC Multi-Target solution with delta resynch? Sync Site 2 current same staff host Site 1 current JNL Cross country/continental distance journal replication Protect against both Local and regional disasters Push button failover available Data consistency guaranteed Campus/metropolitan distance synchronous replication Minimized performance impact to application Fast automated failover during local disasters (using the same IT staff) Data currency guaranteed Site 3 a little behind different staff 21

XP P9500 design objectives The same basic concepts that previous XP generations have lived up to Six nines hardware availability plus state-of-the-art features Ease of use optimization (virtualization) Configuration optimization (online data migration) Capacity optimization (thin provisioning) Performance optimization (auto tiering and policy controls) Replication optimization (local, remote, dual and 3 DC) Scalability optimization (boot once) That build disaster proof solutions and lower cost of ownership 22

XP P9500 recent enhancements

Recent Enhancements Columns and rows may be added, but colors must be maintained. Enhancement 3DC using all Continuous Access Journal Online Data Migration Support for RAID 6 14+2P Business Copy Snapshot expansion Performance Accelerator Software Flash Modules 1.6TB & 3.2TB Benefit Allows maximum business continuity & low RPO over long distances Migrate to XP P9500 with no host or application down time RAID 6 option with maximum reliability and space efficiency Improved response times, up to 32K snapshots per array Increase random IOPs from 350K to 1 Million back end reads Better price per GB and price per IOPs than SSDs for maximum performance and lowest latency 24

HP XP P9500 disk array The 6th generation array in the HP XP disk array family The name is new, but the heritage is the same XP512 XP1024 XP12000 XP24000 P9500 XP XP256 XP48 XP128 XP10000 XP20000 Apr 99 May 00 May 02 Sep 04 May 07 Sep 10 25
