The images shown below were taken on computers running Windows 8, but the general process should work on both Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers.

GlobalProtect VPN VPN stands for "Virtual Private Network" which, in Carleton's context, allows you to access resources from off-campus, and provides secure, encrypted network access. The ability of VPNs to provide a more secure network communication on public networks means they can be good solutions for those who need to get work done from an airport or coffee shop with an open wifi connection. Using GlobalProtect Please select the instructions appropriate for your system. Windows 7 though Windows 10 Click here for Windows instructions... Basic Windows Installation Running GlobalProtect on Windows System Tray Icon Start Menu Basic Windows Installation The images shown below were taken on computers running Windows 8, but the general process should work on both Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers. 1. 2. 3. In any Web Browser (i.e. Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer) go to https://go.carleton.edu/vpn Sign in using your Carleton credentials If you are off campus, you will see a page that prompts you to contact the ITS Helpdesk to receive an Access code. The page looks like this and will tell you which ticket number to reference: If you are on campus (i.e. your device has a Carleton IP address), you will not need to enter an access code and will skip automatically to step 4.

4. Once the code is entered, the webpage will load like this: 5. 6. Click the link for "Windows Installer" A window may open asking you to save the file. Click "Save File" and save it in to the desktop 7. A file will download called "VPNInstaller, and will be on the desktop (if that's what you selected above) or might be in your downloads folder. Look for this desktop icon: 8. The installer must run as an administrator. If your main account typically lets you install software, you should see the following window and will only need to click OK. Otherwise you'll be prompted for administrator credentials that are for your computer specifically, not for Carleton. This process can take some time, and runs partially in the background. Once you've clicked links or buttons, please wait patiently for up to a minute or two before trying again.

9. The installer will open as follows: a. Click "Accept" b. After a wait, a terminal window will appear as follows, you do NOT need to do anything. c. Another configuration window will appear, with a status bar:

10. After the installer runs ( again, this may take several minutes to appear), a configuration window opens as shown here: a. b. c. Portal: auto-populates with "gateway.carleton.edu" User Name: your Carleton username (ex: jdoe) Password: your Carleton password Running GlobalProtect on Windows Once you have installed GlobalProtect, you can see the program in one of two places: the System Tray Icon or the Start Menu. Using either location, you can connect and disconnect from GlobalProtect. Connect and Disconnect using the System Tray Icon The system tray, on the bottom right-hand side of the task bar, will display the icon for GlobalProtect, but you may need to click the triangle at the left, as shown below, to see the GlobalProtect icon. In the image below, the red "x" indicates that GlobalProtect is not connected. To connect, Right-click on the image and choose " Connect" or " Disconnect"

After connecting you should see the GlobalProtect icon change from showing a red "x" to a blue and green shield, with a message "Service connected" If the connection doesn't go through this way you can choose " Open" from the menu, as shown above, or follow the directions below for using the Start Menu to connect and disconnect. Connect and Disconnect using the Start Menu GlobalProtect shows up as a piece of software in the Start Menu. If you have recently installed it, it should show on the first page of the Start Menu, but if it is not there you can type "GlobalProtect" in the search box, shown below: This opens the main control panel for GlobalProtect. From here, choose File > Connect, and watch the progress.

To see connection details Click "View" and choose "Show Panel" Error: "Could not connect to Portal" For machines where data transfer occurs using Easy Transfer, there is a very high probability that you will receive the error 'Could not connect to Portal". To correct this issue do the following: Go to Start Menu and in the search field type/run mmc.exe Under File select Add/Remove Snap In Add Certificates and click OK Double Click Certificates - Current User Double Click Personal Double Click Certificates Right click Carleton-staff-faculty certificate Close mmc.exe and do NOT save. In the Global Protect Authentication window, click Apply If you are wireless or on an Acad Network, you should connect. If you are on an admin window, you will get a 'could not assign IP error'. This is expected.

Mac OS X Click here for Mac OS X instructions... Basic Mac Installation Running GlobalProtect on Mac OS Basic Mac Installation 1. 2. 3. In any Web Browser (i.e. Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer) go to https://go.carleton.edu/vpn Sign in using your Carleton credentials If you are off campus, you will see a page that prompts you to contact the ITS Helpdesk to receive an Access code. The page looks like this and will tell you which ticket number to reference: 4. If you are on campus (i.e. your device has a Carleton IP address), you will not need to enter an access code and will skip automatically to step 4. Once the code is entered, the webpage will load like this: 5. Click the link for "MacOS Installer"

6. A small disk drive will appear on the desktop a. Double-click the file (A) titled "GlobalProtect.dmg" to expand it to the "Global Protect" disk: b. Double Click the "Global Protect" drive (B) to open 7. In the window that opens, double-click "Install Global Protect"

8. A warning may appear saying the file was downloaded from the Internet. Click "Open" 9. If a window opens asking you about PanGPS and a "privatekey" as shown here, Click " Always Allow" IMPORTANT STEP You must see the window below that asks you to allow GlobalProtect (PanGPS, here) to see the security certificates. If you do not see this window, you will need to restart your computer once the remainder of the process has finished. 10. Watch for the update window that notifies you the installation is complete:

11. When the install is complete, a configuration window opens. If the window doesn't open or a screen flashes and disappears, jump to Troubleshooting: a. User Name: your Carleton username (ex: jdoe) b. Password: your Carleton password c. Portal: auto-populates with "gateway.carleton.edu" Troubleshooting GlobalProtect install on personally owned Macs If the installation keeps displaying a blank window that disappears almost instantly, as shown here, restart your computer and the process should resume at step 10 above. Running GlobalProtect on Mac OS Once you have installed GlobalProtect, you can see the program in the menu bar: Click on the icon and choose "Connect" - you will notice the red "x" on the icon change to a silver and blue shield, and you're connected.

iphone, ipod, ipad Click here for ios instructions... Basic ios Installation Starting the VPN on ios Basic ios Installation All recent ios devices (ios 6.0 and higher) include compatible VPN software. Installation means installing a "Profile" to configure the VPN. 1. In Safari go to https://go.carleton.edu/vpn 2. 3. NOTE Because this process interfaces with the ios settings, it works best from Safari. Please do not use Chrome or any other browser for this configuration. Sign in using your Carleton credentials The webpage looks like this: 4. Tap the link for "ios Installer"

5. The VPN Profile will display, click "Install" Note: The profile should reflect Student or Staff/Faculty affiliation. Let the helpdesk know if it seems to be wrong. 6. Because a VPN is designed to redirect your network traffic through another source, in this case Carleton, you will be asked to approve these changes, shown on the following two screens, click "Next" and then "Install": 7. At this point, the installation is complete! Now you'll need to start the VPN manually.

Starting the VPN on ios 1. Open Settings or 2. On the main page, tap the VPN slider to turn it green.

3. A window will open asking for your authentication, use your Carleton credentials 4. The VPN turns on, and you can see that you're connected by the VPN icon in the top left (click to enlarge) 5. To turn the VPN off, simply tap the VPN toggle-switch in Settings and you'll be disconnected.
