The RNCs for downloading are located at http://www.charts.noaa.gov/rncs/rncs.shtml The purpose of this tech note is to define the regions that NOAA provides on its web site. NOAA has set up the site so that you can download compressed files (called zip files) of the RNC by Coast Guard District (CGD), by Regions, by State or All RNCs at once. Below is a summary of the size of the zip files 1. All RNCs 3,135 MB of zip files to download all RNCs 2. RNCs by Coast Guard District 3,262 MB of zip files to download all Coast Guard Districts 3. RNCs by Region 3,228 MB of zip files to download all Regions 4. RNCs by State 3,864 MB of zip files to download all States; not recommended 1
The reason the sum of all states is larger than all RNC is that a chart may overlap state boundaries; hence, the same chart may appear in multiple states. The same is true for overlapping charts in Coast Guard Districts and in Regions. The following sections show the individual areas that can be downloaded. NOAA RNC Chart File Locations When the NOAA RNC charts are unzipped, they are typically saved in the folder BSBROOT which I would put on the C- drive. NOAA has a folder for each chart number where multiple panels for a specific chart will be included in the folder. After you install the charts, go to Charts, select Set or Refresh Chart Paths, select 2 levels down and click on Find Charts. This may take a while depending on the number of charts. After it is completed, click on Save This List. Wait patiently until the Capn organizes all your charts. NOAA RNC by Coast Guard Districts(CGD) The Coast Guard Districts (CGD) are defined in the map below (Figure 1). The zip file size for each CGD is given in Figure 2 below.
