High Performance Switching and Routing IEEE Workshop 2003 SOFTSWITCH PROTOCOL INTERWORKING Gumier Matteo Customer Engineer
Status of packet network Best-effort traffic is highly growing, but the revenues are not enough to justify new investments Rapidly evolving customer expectations, migrating from single service to multi-service needs High pressure on Cost per bit requires Market needs something different 2
. a convergent Network New high grade services must be introduced to increase revenues and customers but they require a QoS Network while.. Optimizing operating efficiency Opportunity for packet networks to reduce costs Voice Data Leased Lines Mobile Video Unified Multi-service Carrier Class Scalable Evolvable Today s networks 21st Century New Public Network 3
The convergent network: providers requirements Service Control : Who s using the service What service is being used Usage based billing model Service Interworking Service Diffusion Carrier Class Solution Session Management Open standards Low cost new service introduction Interworking with existing network Network scalability Distributed Systems Meshed networks topology 4
The convergent network: a vehicle for the new services Carrier Class Marconi Softswitch: takes Control of the Service: User session control (MGCP, FWCP) Firewall & Gateways control guarantees the interworking with existing protocols and services, i.e.: Voice Protocols Data Protocols enhances Service Diffusion enabling traditional Voice Network integration and new service introduction 5
Firewall: control of the service To guarantee a Carrier Class Control of the Service, Marconi defined a new component called: Firewall Boundary between unsecure & secure IP Traffic is allowed through the Firewall under the control of the SoftSwitch Call Agent (FWCP) Guarantees quality of Service for each user Secures network against hacking, protects privacy of customers data, Policy usage of bandwidth by means of Pinhole concept NAT/PAT Supports Bandwidth Reservation protocol (RSVP) hundreds of calls (set up and clear down) per second 6

Protocol Interworking complexity For performance reasons, Distributed and Dynamic Protocols are needed on the Edge Node (Intelligent edge), but technical and economical reason favor a Centralized Architecture Centralized Control and Distributed forwarding Marconi breaks this circle Controlling edge devices using a Centralized System, while offering a scalable and performing architecture. Focussing Voice Services (1) target infrastructure for a Multiservice NGN situation today: majority of public voice services are TDM based, V.5 interfaces dominate in access networks voice-over-ip diffusion in corporate networks VoIP transport is starting to replace TDM class 4 near future: voice-over-data services are implemented cost reductions mainly in OPEX new services can be introduced faster and easier network intelligence is moving to the Edge 11
Focussing Voice Services (2) target infrastructure for a Multiservice NGN SoftSwitches wide usage: Access network elements are migrating to media gateways and get integrated into SoftSwitch systems IP-services dominate Legacy POTS, ISDN VoIP/ VoATM IADs feat.
