1 Getting Started with vcenter Server 1 Heartbeat This guide intrduces yu t vcenter Server Heartbeat and prvides an verview f the prcedure t get vcenter Server Heartbeat up and running quickly. It cntains the fllwing sectins: vcenter Server Heartbeat Overview n page 7 Installatin Prerequisites n page 8 Installatin Prcess n page 8 Pst Installatin Cnfiguratin n page 14 Installatin Verificatin n page 16 vcenter Server Heartbeat Overview vcenter Server Heartbeat is a Windws based applicatin specifically designed t prvide high availability prtectin fr vcenter Server and/r SQL Server cnfiguratins withut requiring specialized hardware. This guide can be used t install vcenter Server Heartbeat in a Lcal Area Netwrk (LAN) emplying a Physical t Virtual r Virtual t Virtual architecture with r withut SQL Server either lcal r remte. VMware describes the rganizatin f vcenter Server Heartbeat servers based upn Pairs and Pair status. VMware refers t tw servers (either virtual r physical) with vcenter Server Heartbeat installed wrking tgether as a vcenter Server Heartbeat Pair. Each server instance in the Pair is assigned bth an Identity (Primary r Secndary) and a Rle (active r passive). Identity is used t describe the instance f the server while the Rle is used t describe what the server instance is ding. When the Identity is assigned t a server it nrmally will nt change ver the life f the server whereas the Rle f the server is subject t change as a result f the peratins the server is perfrming. vcenter Server Heartbeat perates using a Public (Principal) netwrk cnnectin fr user access and a separate private (channel) netwrk cnnectin between the servers fr cntrl and data transfer. The VMware Channel is a crucial cmpnent f the setup and can be cnfigured in a number f ways. Bth the Primary and Secndary servers must have tw r mre netwrk interface cnnectins (NICs). The Principal (Public) netwrk requires ne NIC. The VMware Channel uses a separate NIC fr the private cnnectin between the servers. A secnd pair f NICs can be used t prvide a degree f redundancy fr the VMware Channel. VMware, Inc. 7

Installatin Prerequisites Befre starting the installatin prcess, ensure that yur server(s) and envirnment meet the fllwing prerequisites. Table 1-1. Pre-Installatin Checklist Checked Descriptin f Items t be Checked Verify that the server is nt cnfigured as a dmain cntrller, glbal catalg sever, r DNS server and that there are n ther business critical applicatins running n the server. Verify that the Primary server is a member f the dmain. The Dmain fr the Primary server will nt change thrughut the installatin prcess althugh the Primary and Secndary server names will be changed as part f the installatin prcedure. Verify that the Operating System is Windws 2008 r later and that all current Micrsft security updates have been applied. If.Net 2.0 SP2 is nt installed vcenter Server Heartbeat will install it during the installatin prcess. Verify that vcenter Server 4.1 r later is installed. vcenter Server Heartbeat supprts prtectin f bth standalne instances and als when in Linked Mde grups. Verify that vcenter Guided Cnslidatin, vcenter Update Manager, and vcenter Cnverter are cnfigured using Fully Qualified Dmain Names (FQDN) if installed. Verify that the server has 2GB f RAM minimum (Recmmended 4GB) in additin t any ther memry requirements fr the Operating System r vcenter Server. Verify that the server has at least 2GB f available disk space n the drive where vcenter Server Heartbeat will be installed. Verify that the user is lgged int the dmain and that the accunt used t perfrm the installatin has lcal administratr rights. All applicatins t be prtected are installed and cnfigured n the server. Reserve 3 public IP addresses (1 fr Principal and 2 fr Managed IPs) and 2 private IPs fr the VMware Channel (1 fr each server). The Management IP address is unique fr each server in the in the pair and shuld be adjacent t the Principal (Public) IP address. Verify that the Managed IP setting in the Virtual Infrastructure Client is the same IP address used fr the vcenter Server Heartbeat Principal (Public) IP address. Verify that all VMware cmpnents are bund t the Principal (Public) IP address n the Principal (Public) netwrk adapter. If installing with vcenter Server and SQL Server n the same hst, verify that vcenter Server and SQL Server are installed n separate disk drives. Verify the Primary server s Principal (Public) NIC is cnfigured with a static IP address, crrect netwrk mask, crrect gateway IP address, crrect preferred and secndary (if applicable) DNS server address Verify the Primary server s VMware Channel NIC is cnfigured with a static IP address in a different subnet than the Principal (Public) netwrk, crrect netwrk mask, n gateway IP address, n DNS server IP address, and NetBIOS is enabled (disabled by setup during the installatin prcess). Verify that all firewalls have been cnfigured t allw traffic n bth the Client Cnnectin prt (52267) which shuld be cnfigured by prcess and the specific Default Channel prt (57348). Verify that Windws Server Backup Feature and Cmmand Line Tls have been installed n the Primary server prir t clning. Installatin f Windws Server Backup Feature and Cmmand Line Tls will als install Windws PwerShell. Installatin Prcess vcenter Server Heartbeat is a versatile slutin that prvides cmplete prtectin fr vcenter Server and SQL Server and althugh vcenter Server Heartbeat can be deplyed in multiple cnfiguratins, this guide fcuses n installatin f vcenter Server Heartbeat using the mst cmmn deplyment ptins.fr ther supprted cnfiguratins, see the vcenter Server Heartbeat Installatin Guide. 8 VMware, Inc.

Chapter 1 Getting Started with vcenter Server Heartbeat vcenter Server Heartbeat is installed n bth the Primary and Secndary server f a vcenter Server Heartbeat Pair. VMware recmmends that yu use the Pre-Installatin Checklist t ensure all prerequisites have been met. Unique server names are required fr each server t ensure that the vcenter Server applicatin t perates prperly. T create unique names, the installatin prcess requires that yu rename bth the Primary and Secndary servers t ensure prper cnfiguratin and prevent name reslutin prblems when clients attempt t access the vcenter Server applicatin. Fr example, befre installing vcenter Server Heartbeat yur vcenter Server is named vcenterserver. During the vcenter Server Heartbeat installatin prcess n vcenterserver yu clne vcenterserver (the Primary server) t create a Secndary server. After installatin yu rename the Secndary server t vcshb-secndary and then rename the Primary server t vcshb-primary. Yu then use the Cnfigure Server wizard and identify the Name used t cnnect t vcenter r SQL Server as vcenterserver thereby allwing access t vcenter Server n either the Primary r Secndary servers. NOTE When prtecting SQL Server, the SQL Server instance service must run under an accunt with administratr rights rather than the Netwrk Service r Lcal System accunt. If required, change the Lg On AS prperty by navigating t Start > Administrative Tls > Services. Select the SQL Service instance and click Prperties. Select the Lg On tab and select This accunt. Prvide the new accunt credentials and click OK. Once cmplete, restart the SQL Server instance service. Primary Server Installatin f vcenter Server Heartbeat begins n the Primary server and uses a multi-step prcess t cnfigure the installatin. T install vcenter Server Heartbeat n the Primary server NOTE vcenter Server Heartbeat prmpts yu t enter a valid serial number during the installatin prcess. If yu d nt enter a valid serial number during the installatin prcess, vcenter Server Heartbeat installs in evaluatin mde. 1 Having verified all f the envirnmental prerequisites are met, dwnlad the vcenter Server Heartbeat self-extracting file t an apprpriate lcatin n the Primary server. 2 Open Netwrk Cnnectins, right-click the VMware Channel netwrk cnnectin and select Prperties. Select Internet Prtcl (TCP/IP) and click Prperties. 3 Click Advanced, select the DNS tab, and clear the Register this cnnectin s addresses in DNS check bx. Click OK three times t clse the dialgs. 4 Right-click the Principal (Public) netwrk cnnectin and select Prperties. Select Internet Prtcl (TCP/IP) and click Prperties. 5 Click Advanced, select the DNS tab, and clear the Register this cnnectin s addresses in DNS check bx. Click OK three times t clse the dialgs. 6 Navigate t Start > Administrative Tls > Services t launch the Service Cntrl Manager. 7 If prtecting vcenter Server 5.0 r later, select the fllwing services and set them t Manual. VMware VirtualCenter Server VMware vsphere Prfile-Drive Strage vcenter Inventry Service VMware VirtualCenter Management Webservices 8 Clne the Primary server using VMware vcenter virtual machine clning r anther third-party utility t create a clned image f the Primary server. The clne must be cmpletely identical with n changes t the Name, SID, r dmain membership. D nt start the clned server. VMware, Inc. 9

9 Duble-click the self-extracting file t initiate the installatin prcess n the Primary server. The Setup Intrductin dialg appears. Review the infrmatin and click OK. NOTE If yu click Exit after Setup has started, yu are prmpted t save yur settings. When yu run Setup.exe later, yu will be asked if yu want t use the previusly saved cnfiguratin. 10 The Self-Extractr dialg appears. Click Setup t cntinue. 11 The Setup Type page appears. Because this is a new installatin f vcenter Server Heartbeat, select Install vcenter Server Heartbeat and click Next. NOTE The left pane f each page in the setup wizard prvides infrmatin abut the setup prcess. 12 Select the physical identity f the server n the Physical Hardware Identity page. Select Primary as the server identity and click Next. 13 Read the license agreement carefully and select I accept terms f the License Agreement. Click Next. 14 Click Add t enter a valid serial number fr prductin mde r leave blank t install in the evaluatin mde and click Next. 15 Select LAN fr the netwrk tplgy and click Next. 16 The Secndary Server is Virtual ptin uses the VMware vcenter virtual machine clning t create a clne f the Primary server while the Secndary Server is Physical ptin uses the native vcenter Server Heartbeat clning prcess t create a clne f the physical server. Select the Secndary Server is Virtual ptin and click Next. 17 Cnfigure the installatin paths. The default installatin lcatin is C:\Prgram Files\VMware\VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat, but yu can change it by manually typing a path t anther install lcatin. NOTE The path f the VMware installatin flder cannt cntain Unicde characters. If vcenter Server Heartbeat is installed in a flder that has a path cntaining Unicde characters, this causes the VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat service will t fail t start. The path f the VMware installatin flder can nly cntain lwer and upper case letters A t Z, digits frm 0 t 9, and the fllwing special characters: space \ _ - ( ). : Additinally, vcenter Server Heartbeat des nt supprt file r flder names ending with a perid. r space. Alternatively, click Brwse t select a different lcatin. Click Next. 18 Identify the netwrk adapters (NICs) fr use in the VMware Channel n the Channel Adapter Identificatin page by selecting the VMware Channel NIC frm the list. Click the adapter name t display the selected NIC prperties in the lwer pane. Yu must select at least ne NIC t prceed with the installatin. If n NICs are available, click Open Netwrk Cnnectins t review the netwrk cnfiguratin f yur machine and verify that yu have the crrect number f NICs installed. After selecting the apprpriate NIC, click Next. NOTE Only ne channel can be cnfigured fr each NIC. T cnfigure mre than ne VMware Channel yu must identify mre than ne NIC. A disabled NIC des nt appear in this list. Enable the NIC t display it. If a NIC is discnnected, its IP addresses d nt appear in the lwer pane. 19 The VMware Channel IP Cnfiguratin page prmpts yu t cnfigure the VMware Channel(s) IP netwrk addresses. Click Add fr each available VMware Channel cnnectin. Fr the Primary server, select frm a drp-dwn menu that lists all lcal IP addresses. Type the reciprcal IP address n the Secndary server int the IP Address On Secndary text bx. Yu must specify all VMware Channel IP addresses in subnets utside f the nrmal Principal (Public) IP addressing schema. Click OK. Repeat this step fr additinal NICs. NOTE If yu receive a warning message that the ther server in the pair cannt be cntacted, disregard and click N t cntinue. 10 VMware, Inc.

Chapter 1 Getting Started with vcenter Server Heartbeat 20 Review and adjust, if necessary, the Default Channel prt. Click Next. 21 Select the Principal (Public) NIC(s). The IP address infrmatin is displayed fr each NIC. Click Next. NOTE Adjacent IP addresses shuld be reserved and used fr the Principal (Public) IP address and the Management IP addresses fr the Primary and Secndary Servers. 22 Select Use same IP addresses fr Secndary (Recmmended fr HA secndary) and click Add t specify the IP address. 23 Add the Principal (Public) netwrk address. Click Next. 24 The vcenter Server Heartbeat Cnsle cnnects t an IP address f the active server using the default Client Cnnectin prt f 52267. If this prt is already in use, type an available Client Cnnectin prt in the text bx. Click Next. 25 Select the applicatins t prtect. All licensed vcenter Server Heartbeat features are listed. NOTE If yu are prtecting vcenter nly r vcenter and SQL Server, prvide a Username and Passwrd fr an accunt with rights t Virtual Infrastructure. If installing vcenter Server r ther cmpnenets such as VMware Update Manager, Supprt Tls, etc. lcally and the SQL Server n a separate server, select Prtect Virtual Center nly. If installing SQL Server remtely, upn cmpletin f the vcenter Server installatin lcally, repeat the installatin prcedure at the remte SQL Server lcatin and select Prtect SQL Server nly. If installing bth vcenter Server and SQL Server lcally, select Prtect Virtual Center and SQL Server. 26 The Micrsft Windws Backup Cnfiguratin page prmpts yu t select ptins t facilitate the clne f the Primary server nt the Secndary server. The clning prcess requires pertinent cmpnents f the Primary server fr restratin n t the Secndary server. Create a shared flder n the lcal server and type the path t the flder in the Flder text bx. NOTE When installing int a Windws Server 2008 envirnment, yu must specify a UNC path t the backup file lcatin. Type a UNC path t a lcatin using the machine name r IP address and shared flder int the Flder text bx, fr example: \\10.0.0.16\Backup. 27 Type a User and Passwrd that grants access t the shared flder. Click Next. 28 Review the summary f ptins and cnfiguratin infrmatin fr the installatin. Click Next. 29 Pre-install checks run t verify that the ptins selected are cmpatible with the current cnfiguratin. Setup checks the available disk space, system memry, perating system cmpatibility, and dependencies between mdules. NOTE The Prgress pane n the Pre-Install Checks page displays the prgress f these checks. When finished, the Reprt pane displays the results. 30 If sme pre-install checks are unsuccessful, click the Back buttn t g back thrugh the wizard, make the necessary changes, and run the pre-install checks again. If the pre-install checks are successful, click Next. 31 The next page displays the prgress f the installatin. During this prcess, Setup installs the necessary files and flders nt yur system and applies the cnfiguratin yu specified. Setup als installs Heartbeat Diagnstics and cnfigures it with the default settings. Once cmplete, click Next. 32 The vcenter Server Heartbeat Packet Filter driver installs n each netwrk card f the prductin server. If yu see warnings that the driver is unsigned r did nt cmplete the Windws Lg tests, click Install. If Windws is cnfigured t display Signed Driver warnings, yu may see multiple warnings. By default, the vcenter Server Heartbeat Packet Filter driver is bund t all Principal (Public) netwrk cards present n the machine. The vcenter Server Heartbeat Packet Filter is nt bund t the netwrk cards frming VMware Channel cnnectins as these cards maintain unique IP addresses irrespective f the rle f the server. vcenter Server Heartbeat als disables NetBIOS n the VMware Channel NIC(s) t prevent dmain name cnflicts n the subnet. 33 When the Setup wizard cnfirms the successful cmpletin f the installatin, click Finish. 34 The Cnfigure Server wizard is launched and allws yu t cnfigure the Primary server. 35 Click the Public tab. 36 In the Name used t cnnect t vcenter r SQL Server field, enter the DNS name by which applicatin clients cnnect t the applicatin. Nrmally this is the riginal name f the vcenter Server r SQL Server. There is nly ne Name used t cnnect t vcenter r SQL Server and it is the same n all servers in the cluster. 37 In the NIC drp-dwn, select the Principal (Public) NIC. 38 In the Public IP drp-dwn, select the Principal (Public) IP address assigned t the Principal (Public) NIC. 39 In the first Mask field, enter the Subnet Mask f the Principal (Public) IP address. 40 In the Mgmt IP field, enter a reserved Management IP address fr the Primary server. NOTE The Management IP address is unique fr each server in the in the pair and shuld be adjacent t the Principal (Public) IP address. 41 In the secnd Mask field, enter the Subnet Mask f the Management IP address and click Finish. Secndary Server The prcess f installing vcenter Server Heartbeat n the Secndary server is similar t installing vcenter Server Heartbeat n the Primary server. T install vcenter Server Heartbeat n the Secndary server 1 Befre pwering n the Secndary server image, edit the image settings. a b c d e f g h Select the Principal (Public) virtual netwrk adapter and clear the Cnnected and Cnnect at pwer n check bxes. Repeat the prcess n the VMware Channel virtual netwrk adapter. Pwer n the Secndary server image. After the Secndary server starts, pen Netwrk Cnnectins, right-click the VMware Channel netwrk cnnectin, and select Prperties. Select Internet Prtcl (TCP/IP) and click Prperties. Cnfigure the apprpriate VMware Channel IP address and Subnet Mask. Click Advanced Click the WINS tab, select Disable NetBIOS ver TCP/IP and Click OK three times t clse the dialgs. Right-click the Secndary server image and select Edit Settings. Select the VMware Channel virtual netwrk adapter and select the Cnnected and Cnnect at pwer n check bxes. IP cmmunicatins with the Secndary server g thrugh the VMware Channel. NOTE D nt cnnect the Principal (Public) virtual netwrk adapter at this time t prevent an IP address cnflict n the netwrk. 2 T install the vcenter Server Heartbeat n the Secndary server, execute the self-extracting file t start the installatin prcess. The Setup Intrductin dialg appears. Review the infrmatin and click OK. NOTE If yu click Exit after Setup has started, yu are prmpted t save yur settings. When yu run the self-extracting file again later, yu will be asked if yu want t use the previusly saved cnfiguratin. 12 VMware, Inc.

As with the installatin n the Primary server, select Install VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat and click Next. NOTE The left pane f each page in the setup wizard prvides infrmatin abut the setup prcess. 5 Select the identity f the server n the Physical Hardware Identity page. Select Secndary as the server identity and click Next. 6 Identify the lcatin f the shared flder cntaining the backup file frm the Primary server. Manually type the lcatin path in the text bx using the UNC path. Click Next. 7 The pre-install checks run. Click Next. NOTE The pre-install checks will return the message that the Primary and Secndary server s names match. This is expected and installatin will be allwed t cntinue. If sme pre-install checks are unsuccessful, click the Back buttn t g back thrugh the wizard, make the necessary changes, and run the pre-install checks again. 8 The next page displays the prgress f the installatin. During this prcess, Setup installs the necessary files and flders nt yur system and applies the cnfiguratin yu specified. Setup als installs Heartbeat Diagnstics and cnfigures it with the default settings. 9 The Reprt pane displays the results f the installatin. Click Next. 10 The prgress f the VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat Packet Filter installatin is displayed. Click Next. 11 The vcenter Server Heartbeat Packet Filter driver installs n each netwrk card f the Secndary server. If yu see warnings that the driver is unsigned r did nt cmplete the Windws Lg tests, click Install. If Windws is cnfigured t display Signed Driver warnings, yu may see multiple warnings. The Reprt pane displays the results. Click Next. 12 Once the vcenter Server Heartbeat Packet Filter is cmplete, the Principal (Public) netwrk adapter can be recnnected. Right-click the Secndary server image name and select Edit Settings. 13 Select the Principal (Public) virtual netwrk adapter, select the Cnnected and Cnnect at pwer n check bxes, and click OK. 14 In the Channel Adapter Identificatin page, select the apprpriate adapter and review the IP address cnfiguratin in the lwer pane. Click Next. 15 Althugh yu previusly cnfigured the IP address f the Principal (Public) netwrk cnnectins, yu can make any last minute changes n the Secndary server thrugh vcenter Server Heartbeat. Click Next. 16 The Duplicate Installatin Cmplete page is displayed. Click Finish. 17 The Cnfigure Server wizard is launched. 18 Click the Public tab. 19 In the Name used t cnnect t vcenter r SQL Server fr the vcenter Server r SQL Server, enter the DNS name by which applicatin clients cnnect t the applicatin. Nrmally this is the riginal name f the vcenter Server r SQL Server. Select Internet Prtcl (TCP/IP) and click Prperties. 5 Change the IP address t the match that f the Secndary management IP address previusly entered in the Cnfigure Server wizard. Click OK twice t clse the dialgs. 6 Navigate t the server s System Prperties, select the Cmputer Name tab, and click Change t rename the Secndary server and jin a Wrkgrup. When requested, restart the server. 7 Right-click the Secndary server image and select Edit Settings. 8 Re-enable the virtual netwrk adapters fr bth the VMware Channel and Principal (Public) NICs. 9 Navigate t the server s System Prperties, select the Cmputer Name tab, and click Change t jin the dmain. Pst Installatin Cnfiguratin Upn cmpletin f installatin, a series f tasks must be perfrmed t ensure that vcenter Server Heartbeat is prperly cnfigured. 1 Verify that the SetSPN.exe (Service Principal Names) executable is present in the Windws\System32 directry n bth the Primary and Secndary servers (this is nrmally present as a cmpnent f the Windws 2008 perating system). SetSPN.exe is a Micrsft cmmand-line tl that reads, mdifies, r deletes the Service Principal Names (SPN) directry prperty fr an Active Directry service accunt and is required t be present n bth servers prir t starting vcenter Server Heartbeat fr the first time. 14 VMware, Inc.

Right-click the vcenter Server Heartbeat System Tray icn and select Start VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat. T add the SQL Server Plug-in credentials 1 Launch the vcenter Server Heartbeat Cnsle and navigate t the Applicatins: Tasks page. 2 Click User Accunts. Verify that the user accunt under which yu installed vcenter Server Heartbeat is present in the list f User Accunts. If it is present and is a member f the Dmain Admins grup, Enterprise Admins grup, r has been delegated Administratr rights, g t Step 6. 3 In the User Accunts dialg, click Add. 4 Enter the credentials f a dmain accunt that is a member f the Dmain Admins grup, Enterprise Admins grup, r ne that has been delegated Administratr rights and click OK. 5 Once the accunt has been successfully added t the list, click Clse. 6 In the Tasks pane, select the Netwrk Cnfiguratin task Set SPN (Primary). 7 Click Edit. 8 In the Edit Task dialg, in the Run As: drp-dwn field, select an accunt with apprpriate rights (the accunt previusly added). 9 Click OK. 10 In the Tasks pane, select the Netwrk Cnfiguratin task Set SPN (Secndary). 11 Click Edit. 12 In the Edit Task dialg, in the Run As: drp-dwn field, select an accunt with apprpriate rights (the accunt previusly added). 13 Click OK. 14 After successfully cnfiguring the crrect credentials, select the Set SPN (Primary) task and click Run Nw. Installing the View Cmpser Plug-in After installatin yu must install the View Cmpser Plug-in. T install the View Cmpser Plug-in after vcenter Server Heartbeat has been installed 1 Ensure that View Cmpser has been installed n bth the Primary and Secndary servers with the same cnfiguratin settings. 2 Launch the vcenter Server Heartbeat Cnsle. 3 Navigate t Applicatins: Plug-ins and click Install. 4 Brwse t the plug-in file lcated at: <unzipped_flder>\<vcenterserverheartbeatversin-x86/x64>\plugins\viewcmpser\vie wcmpsernfplugin.dll. 5 Click OK t install the View Cmpser Plug-in. 6 View the Plug-ins pane t verify that ViewCmpserNFPlugin.dll is present and was successfully installed Cnfigure the Applicatin Timeut Exceptin vcenter Server Heartbeat can alert the Administratr if the time taken t start r stp the entire applicatin exceeds the expected time during the fllwing peratins: vcenter Heartbeat startup Shutdwn with prtected applicatins Switchver Failver When the Administratr selects Start Applicatin When the Administratr selects Stp Applicatin NOTE vcenter Server Heartbeat des nt issue the timeut warning when it is perfrming the service restart recvery actin prvided by the peridic service mnitring. If there are multiple applicatins installed, vcenter Server Heartbeat will ttal the individual timeuts set fr each applicatin and issue a single Applicatin Timeut Exceptin alert. Cnfigure timeut settings NOTE The Start Timeut value shuld be cnfigured accrding t vcenter inventry size and the Stp Timeut value accrding t inventry size and peratinal lad. Fr example, if the inventry is large (mre than 500 hsts and 15K Virtual machines, the Start time can be 20-30 minutes. Use the Start Timeut experienced as a guide t assist in determining the Stp Timeut value. 1 Right-click n the applicatin and select Edit frm the menu r select the applicatin and click Edit at the tp f the pane t invke the Edit Applicatin dialg. 2 Enter new values int the Stp Timeut and Start Timeut text bxes r use the arrw buttns t adjust the values (secnds). Click OK. vcenter Server with SQL Server n a Separate Hst When vcenter Server Heartbeat is installed in an envirnment where SQL Server is n a separate hst frm vcenter Server, increase the default Heartbeat interval fr the vcenter Server frm 20 t 30 secnds t ensure prper failver. Installatin Verificatin The Installatin Verificatin prcess validates the prper installatin f vcenter Server Heartbeat and tests the sftware s peratin safely exercising the ability f vcenter Server Heartbeat t perfrm a failver, switchver, and t replicate data and allws yu t verify the peratins cmplete successfully withut risk t data. When pwer is lst, any data nt written t the passive server can be lst. VMware recmmends perfrming a switchver rather than a failver t test the peratin f the passive server. Table 1-2. Verify that bth the File System and the Registry Status display as Synchrnized. Ntify any lcal users that the service will be unavailable fr the duratin f the exercise. Primary Primary Primary Right-click n the System Tray icn and select Shutdwn VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat. Select the ptin t Stp all prtected applicatins. Right-click n the System Tray icn and select Shutdwn VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat. Select the ptin t Stp all prtected applicatins. Right-click n the System Tray icn and select Start VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat. Once vcenter Server Heartbeat has started, right-click n the System Tray icn and select Shutdwn VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat. Select the ptin t Stp all prtected applicatins. vcenter Server Heartbeat stps all mnitred services and exits. This can be verified by navigating t the Service Cntrl Manager and viewing the status f the prtected services. Primary server becmes passive. This activates the netwrk packet filter hiding the Primary server frm the netwrk. This can be verified by navigating t the Service Cntrl Manager and viewing the status f the prtected services. Secndary Navigate t Start > All Prgrams > VMware > VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat > Cnfigure Server t launch the Cnfigure Server wizard. Select the Machine tab and in the Active Server pane, select Secndary server t make the Secndary server s rle active. Right-click n the System Tray icn and select Start VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat. The Secndary server starts as the active server. The System Tray icn displays as S/A. Client Cmpare the applicatin functinal status t the predefined criteria fr availability and perfrmance. Secndary server behaves as the Primary server. Data Replicatin Exercise The Data Replicatin exercise fllws the Failver Simulatin exercise perfrmed previusly. The bjective is t take a wrking active server (the Secndary server) and synchrnize it with the passive (Primary server). This exercise als demnstrates that all the crrect services stpped when the Primary server became passive. vcenter Server Heartbeat is running n the Secndary active server. Using the System Tray icn, verify that the server status displays S/A. vcenter Server Heartbeat is nt running n the Primary server which is set t passive. Using the System Tray icn, verify that the server status displays / t indicate that vcenter Server Heartbeat is nt running. Ntify any lcal users that the service will be unavailable fr the duratin f the exercise. Primary Right-click n the System Tray icn and select Start VMware vcenter Server Heartbeat. vcenter Server Heartbeat starts. Launch the vcenter Server Heartbeat Cnsle. Using the System Tray icn, verify that the Secndary server is active (S/A) and servicing clients. On the Primary server, verify that the server is passive using the System Tray icn status (P/ ). On the Secndary server, launch the vcenter Server Heartbeat Cnsle and select the Data: Replicatin tab. Verify that bth the File System and Registry status are Synchrnized. vcenter Server Heartbeat Cnsle Any Click n the Server: Summary tab. Select the Primary server icn and click Make Active. Cnfirm applicatin perfrmance and availability meets previusly defined criteria. Verify that client applicatins are running as expected after the switchver prcess. The vcenter Server Heartbeat Cnsle Server: Summary page displays the applicatins stpping n the active server. Once all applicatins are stpped, the active server becmes passive and the passive server becmes active. The Cnsle shws the applicatins starting n the newly active server. Bth the File System and Registry status are Synchrnized. Services cntinue t be prvided as befre the switchver ccurred.
