CIS 231 Windows XP (SP3) Install Lab #3 Virtual Machines Before beginning the installation, create a virtual machine in which you will install the operating system. 1) Open the VMware vsphere Client. Be patient, it may take awhile to open. Use Windows session credentials to Login. 2) At the Certificate Warning screen, Click Ignore to continue using the current SSL certificate. 3) From the Home / Inventory screen, select VMs and Templates. (If you don t see the above screen after logging in, click on the Home Icon in the address bar.) 4) In the left pane navigate to the CIS231 folder and select the folder within that folder that was assigned to you.
5) Either right-click on the folder and select New Virtual Machine or select the Create new virtual machine link in the middle pane. 6) Select Typical on the Configuration page and click Next. 7) Assign a name to your Virtual Machine. Use your initials followed by 231-WinXP. (i.e,: if your initials are JMT then your virtual machine s name would be: JMT-231-WinXP 8) Click Next 9) Select K Building as the Host/Cluster and click Next. 10) Select the console assigned to you.and click Next. 11) Accept the VMConsole-CIS for the destination storage and click Next 12) Select Windows as the Guest Operating System and use the drop down menu to select the version of Windows being installed. 13) Click Next. 14) At the Create Network Connections screen you should accept the default values, and click Next. 15) The next screen requires that you configure the virtual disk size. The default size is sufficient do not change it. Change the provision to Thin Provision and then click on Next. 16) Review the Virtual machine settings. If necessary, make changes otherwise click Finish.
Install Windows XP 1. Right-Click on the Virtual Machine that you just created and select Open Console 2. Click on the cd icon, then select CD/DVD drive 1 and choose Connect to ISO image on a datastore 3. Browse to the appropriate ISO file by following the path: EQL-CIS-Images\ Image Files \ Windows \ Widen the name column so that you can read the full name of the folder and browse to the appropriate ISO. 4. After selecting the appropriate ISO file, power on the virtual operating system by clicking on the green arrow. 5. You should eventually see a see the Welcome to Setup window like the one displayed below. If you see this window, press Enter to setup Windows and continue with step 7. If you initially see a DHCP prompt with a spinning bar and then eventually see a Symantec Ghost window instead of the below window, continue with step 6.
6. Complete step 6 ONLY if you see the Symantec Ghost window instead of the Windows 7displayed in step 5. o Ensure the ISO file is still selected. If it s not selected, re-select it. If necessary, refer to step 2 on the previous page for instructions. o Close all open windows within the Virtual OS and wait about 10 seconds; the system should automatically restart. Return to step 5. 7. At the Windows XPLicensing Agreement Screen, press F8 (I agree) to accept the agreement. 8. A screen, which displays the existing partition information, will be displayed. Press the Enter to select the Unpartitioned Space. 9. At the next screen, select Format the Partition using the NTFS file system. The partition will be formatted and files will be copied to the Windows XP installation folder. (This will take a few minutes. When complete, the Windows XP machine will automatically reboot. DO NOTHING the Setup Process will automatically continue. 10. Regional Settings Accept the default Regional Settings. Click on NEXT 11. Personalize your software: Name: Type CIS231 in the Name Box. Organization: Bristol Community College Click on NEXT 12. Product Key Enter your Product Key. 13. Computer Name and Administrator Password Computer Name: YourInitials-231-WinXP. Administrator Password: Use Microsoft! 14. Date and Time Settings Set the Correct Date and Time Set the Time Zone to (GMT 05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) Click Next 15. Networking Settings Select Typical Settings 16. Workgroup or Computer Domain Accept the default of WORKGROUP and click next. We will add the client to the domain later.
The installation will continue and the system will restart itself. DO NOTHING 17. Click Next at the Welcome to Microsoft Window screen 18. Select Not Right Now at the Help Protect Your PC screen and click Next. 19. Select Yes, this computer will connect through a Local Area Network and click Next. 20. Select No, remind me every few days and click next. 21. Enter CIS231 Student in the Your Name box and click next and then click finish. The user s desktop will soon be displayed. 22. Install VMware Tools 23. Activate your product key from the keys icon in the system tray. 24. Download but don t install the Admin-Pak Administrative Tools from the Supplemental Materials page on the class website. You will need this file in a later lab but you MUST download it now and store it on this system while you have Internet Access on this system. After completing all of the above, confirm to me that you can access the Internet from this virtual operating system, confirm that you ve installed the VMWare Tools and confirm that you ve activated your key. Before joining this computer to the domain you must download and install all Windows XP High Priority Updates.
