Windows 8 Operating System Released by Microsoft in 2012 Designed to operate on touch-screen devices Available for laptops, desktops, and tablet computers Performing Tasks in Windows 8 Use the mouse Touch the screen on touch-enabled devices Use keyboard commands Start Screen The first thing you see after you login to Windows 8. Windows 8 interface is the other name of the Start screen The start screen is where you begin all activities It contains most used applications. Windows 8 apps are applications specifically designed to run in the Start screen interface of Windows 8. Switch list is a list of thumbnails of opened programs. CMP-001 4 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

Explore the Taskbar It is a horizontal bar located at the bottom of the desktop, it contains toolbars, open window buttons, and the Notifications area. Notification Area It is on the right side of the taskbar. It displays icons for programs running in the background and provides access to such system activities as managing wireless networks and adjusting volume. It provides important status information that displays in pop-up windows. Screen Saver A screen saver is a moving series of pictures or images that displays when your computer has been idle for a specified period of time. Identify Window Components Title bar: the long bar at the top of each window. The title bar always displays the name of the folder, file, or program. File Explorer Interface File Explorer is an app that you can use to create and manage folders and files CMP-001 9 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

File explorer views Details gives you additional details, such as file type and size. You can also change the size of icons by selecting Small, Medium, Large, or Extra Large icons. The List view shows the file names without added detail. Tiles and Content views are useful to show file thumbnails (small pictures describing file contents) and varying levels of detail regarding file locations. Using the Navigation pane The Navigation Pane provides ready access to computer resources, folders, files, and networked peripherals such as printers. It is divided into five areas: Favorites, Libraries, Home group, Computer, and Network. CMP-001 10 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

The Favorites area contains frequently accessed folders and recent searches. The Libraries are collections of files from different locations that are displayed as a single virtual folder. Home group is a Windows 8 feature that enables you to share resources on a home network. The Network area provides quick access to the devices and contents of the network computers. Files and folders Files include electronic data such as documents, databases, slide shows, worksheets, digital photographs, music, videos, and Web pages Folders is where you place your data files to organize them. Subfolders are folders within other folders arranged according to purpose. Creating a Folder CMP-001 11 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

Open, Rename, and Delete Folders To open a Folder Double click the Folder. To rename a Folder Right-click the name and select Rename. Type the new name and press Enter. To remove a folder, right-click the item, click Delete. If you delete an item from a hard drive it will be placed in the Recycle Bin, but if you delete it from a removable storage medium, such as a flash drive, it will be permanently deleted. Copy and Move Folders To copy an item, right-click the item and select Copy on the shortcut menu. Go to destination folder, right-click, and then click Paste. To move an item, right-click the item and select Cut on the shortcut menu. Go to destination folder, right-click, and then click Paste. What is internet? The word internet is derived from the word inter-networking which means connecting different network together. Thus the internet can be termed as network of networks. Uses of internet Applications of internet: There are a large number of applications of internet for various purposes. Example: (E-mail, uploading, downloading) E-mail Provides a fast and efficient alternative to traditional mail by sending and receiving electronic documents. CMP-001 12 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

Uploading The process of transferring a file from your local computer to a network computer is called uploading. Downloading The process of transferring a file from a network computer to your local computer is called downloading. Web Site A computer storage area that contains one or more web pages Uniform Resource Locator (URL) Every page has its own unique address known as URL. The different parts of an URL are illustrated below: Address Bar At the top, you see along rectangular box called the Address Bar. When you want to visit a website, type the website address or URL in the Address Bar, For Example http://www.microsoft.com and press Enter. CMP-001 13 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

Click ok Using the Bookmarks center Favorites list (bookmarks) Google chrome bookmarks are used to save links to sites that you want to visit again Adding items to the bookmarks list If you re on a site that you want to make a favorite(bookmark), click the setting button, and then click bookmark, and click bookmark this page. 4- Remove all other keyboards. Delete (clear browsing history) 1- Close all Chrome windows. 2- Open a new Chrome session and click the Chrome menu ( ) on the browser toolbar 3- Click Tools. 4- Click Clear browsing data. Or (Shift+Ctrl+Backspace) shortcut. CMP-001 17 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

5- In the dialog that appears, select the following checkboxes: Browsing history Download history Cookies and other sites and plug-in data Cached image and files 6- Use the menu at the top, select "beginning of time". 7- Click Clear browsing data. Note: This may take a few minutes to process. Please wait for the files to delete before you continue. 8- Click the "x" to the right of the Settings tab to close it. Pop up blocker Disabling the Google Chrome Pop-up Blocker: 1- Open Chrome and click the Chrome menu ( ) 2- Click Settings CMP-001 18 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

3- Scroll down to the Privacy heading (you may need to click Show advanced settings 4- In the Privacy section, Click Content settings 5- In the Pop-ups section, Select "Allow all sites to show popups 6- Click Done. CMP-001 19 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

OneDrive How to sign up with Gmail account on OneDrive 1- Enter https://www.onedrive.com in the address bar 2- Click on sign up 3- Choose sign up for free 4- Enter your information and your Gmail account 5- After you finish, Click on create account CMP-001 20 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015

Create a folder in OneDrive 1- Click on create then choose Folder 2- You can name the folder Ex: Windows CMP-001 21 2 nd Semester - 2014-2015
