Multiprocessing. Two processing units (called arithmetic logic units or ALUs) installed within a single processor (called multiprocessing and first used by Pentium processors). The Pentium was the first processor that could execute two instructions at the same time. Dual processors. A server motherboard might have two processor sockets, called dual processors or a multiprocessor platform (see Figure 5-2). A processor (for example, the Xeon processor for servers) must support this feature Multi-core processing. Multiple processors can be installed in the same processor housing (called multi-core processing). A processor package might contain up to eight cores (dual-core, triple-core, quad-core, and so forth). Multithreading. Each processor or core processes two threads at the same time. When Windows hands off a task to the CPU it is called a thread and might involve several instructions. To handle two threads, the processor requires extra registers, or holding areas, within the processor housing that it uses to switch between threads. In effect, you have two logical processors for each physical processor or core. Intel calls this technology Hyper- Threading and AMD calls it HyperTransport. The feature must be enabled in BIOS setup. 5

How a Processor Works Processor frequency (speed) Speed at which processor operates internally Multiplier Factor multiplied against system bus frequency Determines processor frequency System bus frequency multiplier = processor frequency Processor sold today contain ALUs and registers that can process 32 bits or 64 bits at a time In computing, the clock multiplier (or CPU multiplier or bus/core ratio) measures the ratio of an internal CPU clock rate to the externally supplied clock. A CPU with a 10x multiplier will thus see 10 internal cycles (produced by PLL-based frequency multiplier circuitry) for every external clock cycle. For example, a system with an external clock of 133 MHz and a 10x clock multiplier will have an internal CPU clock of 1.33 GHz. The external address and data buses of the CPU (often collectively termed front side bus or FSB in PC contexts) also use the external clock as a fundamental timing base, however, they could also employ a (small) multiple of this base frequency (typically two or four) in order to transfer data faster. 15

Open the socket and remove protective cover 2. Line up processor with two posts on the socket (see Figure 5-25 on next slide) 3.
