Full scores and instrumental arts are availale or hire/rental only. Duration aout minutes Requiem as irst erormed on 18 Novemer 016 at St Paul's Church, Knightsridge in a concert given y the BBC Singers, conducted y David Hill. The concert as also roadcast on BBC Radio. Comoser s note I sometimes think that every comoser has a requiem aiting to e comosed, in the same ay, erhas, as the ook e all have aiting to e ritten. Many o the ell-knon requiems contain some o the inest music o a comoser s outut. Certainly this is the case ith Mozart, Fauré, Durulé, Brahms and Britten, to name only a e. Even the lesser knon requiems are o a very high quality. Works such as those y Dvořák, Cheruini and Stanord come to mind. During the 0th and 1st Centuries there has een an outouring o requiems in hich some comosers have chosen to set arts o the standard text. Others have taken Brahms examle and chosen religious texts that have relevance to lie eyond the grave. Some have comined the to. My on eort has taken time to come to ruition. For some years I considered riting a large-scale ork. Eventually I elt that a ork that could e sung liturgically, ith organ accomaniment, might e the most useul aroach. Having taken art, either as a chorus memer, conductor or layer in no eer than 1 requiems, those ith an eye to inluences ill see ith clarity the guiding hand o many o them. Much o the material in my Requiem is ased on to motto themes that aear in the irst eight ars o Requiem aeternam. I have tried to e saring in my use o divisi and to use contrauntal riting here it seemed aroriate. I have also attemted to rite hrases that are not over long, so that, aart rom In aradisum, staggered reathing is, hoeully, not necessary. Some may e surrised at the lively nature o Domine, esu Christe. Even a service o requiem can aord to have some lively music, and here I acknoledge reely the energy in oth Stanord s and Mozart s settings o the same ords. Like many comosers o the last 100 years, I have not set the hole o Dies irae. The inal art o the text, Pie esu, as immortalised y Fauré. This roaly accounts or its aearance in many requiems since. I have oten elt that this art o the text can aear somehat isolated i it is not linked in any ay to the drama o the ords that recede it. I have thereore set Lacrimosa, the art o the text immediately receding Pie esu, in order give the latter more meaning. In Paradisum is a later addition to the Requiem text, and as sometimes sung hile mourners rocessed to the graveside. The solemn tread o a uneral rocession is suggested y the slo moving edal line. Organ registration is let to the layer, although there are a e indications aout hich assages may e layed on a solo sto. The voice arts contain some hrasing indications, ut there are many other laces, not marked, here crescendos and diminuendos may e used reely. This Requiem is dedicated to the memory o my Mother and Father. They ere oth talented amateur musicians and gave me every encouragement to ursue a lie in cathedral music.
