Before installing the software Before installing any PCLaw software: Read this Installation and Upgrade Guide thoroughly. Review and/ or print the checklist provided to assist you in successfully completing the installation. Check each item off the checklist as it is completed through completion of the installation procedure. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 3

Define the Host Environment If installing the PCLaw software for the first time, it is necessary to create a healthy environment to host the LexisNexis PCLaw software. At this stage, decisions include determining the server, the operating system, how powerful the server must be, the appropriate amount of disk space, and whether the network is capable of handling the anticipated traffic. Operating System PCLaw supports the Microsoft operating system. For supported versions, see PCLaw Operating System Requirements. It is critical that the operating system used to host LexisNexis PCLaw is a supported or compatible operating system. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 4

Checklist Compliance and Assistance It is pertinent that each item in the checklist be reviewed and completed prior to attempting to install any PCLaw software. Additional information regarding PCLaw and the installation are listed below. Annual Maintenance Plan: For assistance on obtaining an Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP), please contact the LexisNexis Practice Management Sales department at 1-800-328-2898. Requirements: To ensure your firm's system meets or exceeds the minimum set of requirements, see PCLaw Operating System Requirements. PCLaw setup file: To download and run the PCLaw setup file, refer to the Download and Run the Installer topic for assistance. Subsequent PCs: After the PCLaw installation is complete, you will be asked if installation for additional workstations/ PCs is required. If so, follow the steps provided in the procedure for adding subsequent PCs. PCLaw initial setup: To complete the initial PCLaw setup, complete the steps provided in the Initializing PCLaw Data topic for instructions. PCLaw Mobility: If your firm will use PCLaw Mobility, follow the steps provided in the Installing and Enabling PCLaw Mobility section of this manual. PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist This checklist is intended for use by PCLaw administrators who have reviewed the PCLaw installation documentation and are preparing to install the software for the first time on a new server. PCLaw Pre-Installation Checklist Your firm has an active Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP) with a Product Key. If installing PCLaw for the first time on a new server, the following components of the firm's new PCLaw Host environment server have been determined: 1. Operating System 2. Database 3. Data storage location The system meets the minimum/recommended set of requirements. All users are logged out of PCLaw. A complete backup of the PCLaw database and documents has been done The computer has a network drive mapped to the PCLaw shared components folder. "Installing PCLaw on a new Server system" on page 13. The PCLaw setup file has been downloaded from pclaw.com/techpage OR the entitlement email has been received. Will PCLaw Mobility be installed for the firm? 1. If Yes, complete the Install PCLaw Link as a Service procedure. 2. Enable PCLaw Mobility feature for the entire firm. 3. Enable PCLaw Mobility for each Mobility user within the firm. 4. Download and install the PCLaw Mobility Access Manager. Completed by: Date/ Time: 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 6

Running the PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool Before upgrading to PCLaw 16 you'll need to run the PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool. The PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool verifies that the existing data is clean prior to upgrading each of your PCLaw databases. The following table defines which data verification tool to use when upgrading PCLaw: Current Version Upgrading to SQL PreCheck Tool VDI Tool 13.x 14.x or 15.x X 13.x 16.x X 14.x 15.x X 14.x 16.x X 15.x 16.x X Before you begin the installation: Obtain the PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool executable file from the entitlement email Make sure that all users are logged out of the PCLaw database. Close all programs. To run the PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool: 1. Locate and run the PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool that you downloaded. 2. In the PCLaw SQL PreCheck tool, select the Run the PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool check box, and then click OK. 3. Enter the PCLaw User Name and Password, and then click OK. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 7

The PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool displays the progress as the tool runs in the background. This process can take several hours. NOTE The Cancel button on progress bar stops the PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool. There is no harm to the files to do this; however, some of log files will not be created. 4. When the utility is finished, a dialog box is displayed indicating one of the following: The tool completed successfully and you can upgrade PCLaw. The tool found issues with the data and you need to contact PCLaw Support and email the log files before upgradings the software. NOTE When running the tool, some CTree errors cannot be captured by the PCLaw SQL PreCheck Tool. The CTree engine may display an error message and close the tool. Download and run the installer on the host machine Installation and update tasks are accomplished using the LexisNexis PCLaw Installer. It scans the workstation and is used to either install a new installation of LexisNexis PCLaw or update an existing installation. Access to the Installer is via your firm's Product Keys/ Entitlement email and is used to download the latest version of the PCLaw application software for new releases, service packs, and/ or hot fixes. The installer can also be downloaded from www.pclaw.com/techpage. Warning Although the Installer can be run more than once, if it is stopped before completion, it must be restarted from the beginning. Before you begin: Ensure you have the firm's Product Keys/ Entitlement email. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 10

Download and run the installer 1. Click the 'download your software' link in your Product Key/ Entitlement email. The Download your software link displays. 2. Click the link associated with the Download your software from the link below topic. The LexisNexis Delivery window opens. 3. Click the Download button. An Important Notice page appears. Please read the note and click Continue. 4. The Download PCLaw page is displayed. Read the instructions on the page and click Copy Key and Continue Download to download and run the Installer. 5. When the Installer is finished downloading, it will run automatically. Proceed to the New PCLaw Installation procedure for new installs, or see Update LexisNexis PCLaw for PCLaw application updates to continue. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 11

Installing PCLaw on a new Server system After you have completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist and obtained the PCLaw installer from the www.pclaw.com/techpage, it is time to install the program. If you are installing to a Server without any data, follow the instructions below. If you are installing PCLaw on a system that already has PCLaw data, please skip to Install PCLaw and attach it to an Existing Database. Before you begin the installation: Ensure that you have reviewed and completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist Close all programs 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 13

Install the PCLaw application 1. Run the PCLaw installer from your entitlement email, or download it from www.pclaw.com/techpage, and run it. 2. If the Microsoft.Net Framework is not installed on the Server, the PCLaw Installer will prompt you to install it. Click Install. When the User Account Control appears, click Yes. Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5 will install itself automatically. 3. Once the Microsoft.NET framework is installed, the PCLaw installer may show several screens before prompting you to choose an Installation method. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 14

Make sure that Install SQL Server Express components with SQL Server Management Studio and PCLaw is selected and Check the box confirming that you have read the End User License Agreement. 4. Click Next. NOTE If SQL has already been installed on the installation server, you may select Install, Update or Reinstall PCLaw instead. 5. On the Installation Checklist window, verify that each condition on the checklist is satisfied, and check each box. 6. Click Next. An Important Note appears, explaining that multiple User Account Control requests are likely to appear during installation. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 15

7. Please read this note and click Next. 8. On the SQL Server Password window, enter a valid password for your new SQL server's sa account. 9. Click Next. A UAC prompt will appear. 10. Click Yes. Another Prompt will appear. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 16

11. Click Yes again. A notification will appear, to warn you of User Account Controls that are not immediately visible. 12. Click OK to confirm and continue. PCLaw will begin downloading the SQL setup executable. Stay alert for a flashing user account control notification in the task bar. 13. Once it appears, click Yes. PCLaw will extract the SQL files. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 17

A UAC prompt will appear. 14. Click Yes to this prompt. 15. Click Yes to the next UAC prompt as well. At this point, the PCLaw installer will begin the process of downloading and installing a SQL Server to act as your PCLaw database. This process is automatic, but can take some time. 16. Once the SQL installation has completed, the End User License Agreement window will appear. Review 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 18

the License Agreement information. NOTE You must read to the bottom of the End User License Agreement, and ensure that the scroll bar is at the bottom as well, in order for the 'Next' button to become available. 17. Click Next. Clicking the Next button implies that you have read and agree with the End User License Agreement. The Installation Agreement window opens. 18. Check the check box to agree to the Installation Agreement. 19. Click Next. The Data Set Create/ Attach window opens. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 19

20. Select the Create a new data set option. 21. Click Next. The Enter Product Key window opens. 22. Enter the Product Key obtained from the firm's entitlement email. 23. Click Next. NOTE The Next button becomes available only after the Product Key is correctly entered. If you copied your product key from the download page, the paste button can be used to insert the key without having to manually type it in. 24. Accept the defaults for the installation location, or use the Change... button to change the location. 25. Click Next. NOTE Install your PCLaw books to a shared network location where all PCLaw users will have both Read and Write permissions. The Ready to Install window opens. 26. 27. A UAC prompt will appear. Click Yes to continue with the installation. 28. Once the installation is complete, the Initialize Data window opens. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 22

NOTE As PCLaw uses a SQL database, it is possible to host the PCLaw application on a different server than its database. When this is the case, PCLaw cannot make automatic database backups. Please make sure to create regular backups of your PCLaw SQL Database via Microsoft SQL Studio Manager if it is hosted on a different environment than the PCLaw application. 29. To open PCLaw and initialize your data, select Initialize my data now and click Finish. This completes the installation and opens PCLaw with the Data Initialization window open. To complete the installation and not initialize data, select I will initialize my data later and click Finish to finish the installation and close the installer. Refer to Initialize PCLaw Data for the detailed procedure used to complete the data initialization process. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 23

Upgrade an earlier version of PCLaw with a Ctree database to PCLaw 16.0 After you have completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist and obtained the PCLaw setup file, you are nearly ready to upgrade the Ctree version of PCLaw to PCLaw 16 (SQL). Before you begin the upgrade: Ensure that you have reviewed and/ or completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist Ensure all users are logged out of PCLaw Make a complete backup of PCLaw and store it on another machine or separate media. Close all programs Obtain the PCLaw setup file from www.pclaw.com/techpage, or run it from the entitlement email 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 24

Upgrade the PCLaw application 1. On the host machine, run the PCLaw Installer. If Microsoft.Net Framework is not installed on the Server, the PCLaw Installer will Prompt you to install it. 2. Click Install. 3. When the User Account Control appears, click Yes. 4. Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5 will install itself automatically. 5. Once the Microsoft.NET framework is installed, the PCLaw installer may show several preparation screen before prompting you to choose an Installation method. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 25

20. Enter the Product Key obtained from the firm's entitlement email. 21. Click Next. NOTE The Next button becomes available only after the Product Key is correctly entered. If you copied your product key from the Landing page, the paste button can be used to insert the key without having to manually type it in. Convert your PCLaw data Even though PCLaw has been upgraded, it is not ready to be used just yet. The PCLaw Books must also be updated. To update the books: 1. Open PCLaw. The application will ask you to log into a set of books. 2. Enter the password for your selected books and click OK to begin converting the book. PC law will attempt to verify your licensing information. 3. Click Yes to verify your license. 4. Once the license is Verified, PCLaw will prompt you to back up your accounting data. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 33

5. Click Yes and select a location to backup your data. An Alert will appear. 6. Click OK. 7. PClaw will prompt you to convert your data. 8. Click Yes. PCLaw will begin converting data. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 34

9. Once PCLaw begins converting Ctree data, a Microsoft SQL Server Configuration window will appear. 10. Enter the sa account password created in step 6. Click OK. PCLaw will finalize the conversion. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 35

11. Click OK to exit the conversion and begin using the converted books in PCLaw 12. Repeat the conversion process for each set of books in PCLaw. Once you have converted all your books, The PCLaw upgrade will be complete. NOTE It is possible to host the PCLaw application on a different server than the PCLaw database. When this is the case, PCLaw cannot make automatic database backups. Please ensure to make regular backups of your PCLaw SQL Database via Microsoft SQL Studio Manager if it is hosted on a different environment than the PCLaw application. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 36

Upgrade an earlier version of PCLaw SQL to 16.0 After you have completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist and obtained the PCLaw setup file from the techpage, you are nearly ready to upgrade the prior SQL version of PCLaw to version 16. Before you begin the upgrade: Ensure that you have reviewed and/ or completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist Ensure all users are logged out of PCLaw Make a complete backup of PCLaw and store it on another machine or separate media. Close all programs Obtain the PCLaw setup file from www.pclaw.com/techpage or run it from the entitlement email 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 37

Upgrade the PCLaw application 1. On the host machine, run the PCLaw installer. 2. If Microsoft.Net Framework is not installed on the Server, the PCLaw Installer will Prompt you to install it. Click Install. Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5 will install itself automatically. Once it has finished installing, the PCLaw upgrade will resume. 3. PCLaw may prompt you to restart your computer to continue the installation. 4. Click Yes to reboot your computer. The PCLaw installer will automatically resume once Windows restarts. 5. Upon resuming, the PCLaw installer will prompt you to choose an Installation method. 2017 LexisNexis All rights reserved. 38

Select Install, Update or Reinstall PCLaw. 6. Click Next. 7. On the Installation Checklist window, verify that each condition on the checklist is satisfied, and check each box. 8. Click Next to make the End User License Agreement window will appear. Review the License Agreement information. 9. Click Next. Clicking the Next button implies that you have read and agree with the End User License Agreement. The Installation Agreement window opens. 10. 12. Enter the Product Key obtained from the firm's entitlement email. NOTE The Next button becomes available only after the Product Key is correctly entered. If you copied your product key from the Landing page, the paste button can be used to insert the key without having to manually type it in. 13. The Ready to Install Window will appear 14. Click Install. PClaw will uninstall the existing installation and install PCLaw 16. 15. Convert your PCLaw books Once the computer has rebooted, PCLaw will have finished upgrading. Before it can be used, each set of books must be updated. To update the books: 1. Open PCLaw. Performing a Maintenance Installation The PCLaw installer still has several uses, even after being used to install or upgrade to PCLaw 16. Adding new Books to PCLaw The PCLaw installer can be used to add additional set of books to PClaw, if you have additional product keys to activate each new set. This process can only be performed on a machine that already has PCLaw installed. 1. Run the PCLaw Installer. Installing PCLaw and attaching it to an existing database If you would like to access a PCLaw database from a machine that does not have PCLaw installed, you can simply run the installation file on that machine and attach to the database. Update and upgrade LexisNexis PCLaw This section provides you with information and procedures needed to update and/ or upgrade your PCLaw software to the latest version. Please refer to the Configure update settings and/ or LexisNexis PCLaw manual updates sections for detailed procedures. An update installs the new features and fixes associated with a new release. An error message will appear if it is not possible to update from the current version to the Updated version. To obtain the best performance from PCLaw, ensure it is updated to the latest version. You can have PCLaw do this automatically on a set schedule, or you can update manually. When updating your PCLaw application, be sure the following conditions are met: All users are logged out of PCLaw. All other applications are closed.
