emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Introduction 1-5 1 Introduction Janz Automationssysteme AG s em[view] systems are an additional development. These HMI systems and industrial display solutions are a combination of the familiar Janz empc systems with a wide range of LCDs, with or without touch-screen. Starting from 6.4, the LCDs can be combined with empc-a400 or empc-m as a complete HMI solution with smallest dimensions and power dissipation. em[view]s are also available without touch-screen. The em[view]-19t/d is a display only solution. If a touch-screen is not needed contact Janz Automationssysteme AG for further information. 1.1 Features Touch screen linked by RS232 or USB Wake On Touch (with RS232, only) DVI and VGA connectors Small housing size 14 32 V DC power supply Fanless cooling concept Protection rating of the front is IP65 Fast und easy mounting High grade aluminium front Customizable design of the front panel Very flat front panel design (only 4 mm) 1.2 Functional Overview em[view]s are normally delivered with a touch-screen. To use the touch-screen the em[view]-19t/d must be connected to a standard RS232 or USB port of a computer system e.g. an empc and a driver must be installed at the host. The control of the resistive touch-screen is realized through a PenMount DMC9000. The resistive touch-screen is realized through a 2.1mm thick glass panel with resistive surface. The PenMount controller is linked to the RS232 port and USB port. If the USB port is used, the serial port is deactivated. The power must be supplied by an external power supply. This power supply must be capable to provide enough power for the em[view]-19t/d. Please refer to the technical specifications section for more information. Rev. 1.0 Janz Automationssysteme AG

emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation 2-7 2 Installation When opening the shipping package of the em[view], the contents of the package should be checked immediately. The em[view] is delivered in a configured state, but the configurations can be adjusted by the user as well. To adjust the em[view]s configuration, an OSD (On Screen Display) is installed and controllable by buttons at the backside. The package also contains a terminal plug for the power connector. The em[view] needs a power source in between 14 to 30V DC for operation. The installation of this equipment is allowed for qualified service personnel only. Before connecting the DC main supply, the protective bonding conductor (PE) must be attached to prevent hazardous voltage. Auxiliary existing rules for installation of electrical equipment must be attended to. 2.1 Dimensions and mounting information E B D C A Figure 3: em[view] measures The needed cut-out measures are given by A and B. The overall front panel dimensions are denoted with C and D. E is the depth of the case. Display A B C D E 19 440-0/+2 mm 365-0/+2 mm 460 mm 386 mm 52 mm Table 1: em[view] dimensions Rev. 1.0 Janz Automationssysteme AG

2-8 emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation The maximum thickness of the front, where the em[view] is mounted in must not exceed 8 mm. 2.2 Mounting The em[view] is designed to be mounted into a front panel. Special mounting clamps fix the display without drilling extra holes; the mounting screws are not visible from the front side. Please refer to the dimension specifications Table 1 for the necessary front panel cut-outs. hook in clamp, screw to fixate. Figure 4: Mounting em[view]-19t/d Janz Automationssysteme AG Rev. 1.0

Figure 5 shows a block diagram of the internal function. VGA DVI-D Scaler unit Power Power unit Display with touch-screen USB RS232 Interface unit Figure 5: Block diagram for the internal logic 2.3.1 DC main power supply The Power unit (Figure 5) is energizing all internal components, the display and its backlight. Thereby the power supply can vary in between 14 to 32 VDC. Before connecting the DC main power supply the protective bonding conductor (PE) must be connected. The power connector is included in delivery. The assignment of this connector is shown in Figure 6 and Table 2. 1 2 3 Pin Description 1 + 14..32 VDC 2 NC, do not connect 3 GND Figure 6: Power connector Table 2: Power connector assignment 2.3.2 Serial interface - RS232 The em[view]-19t/d provides a serial interface to connect the touch-screen to a host computer. If the USB is connected to the host the serial interface chip is deactivated. The pin assignment of the 9 pin female SUB-D connector is shown in Table 3. Rev. 1.0 Janz Automationssysteme AG

2-10 emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation Pin Assignment Output 1 NC 2 TxD 3 RxD 4 NC 5 GND 6 NC 7 RTS 8 NC 9 RI Table 3: SUB-D 9 Pin assignment The em[view]-19t/d provides a ring indicator (RI) signal for waking up the host PC. To use this feature the host must provide Wake On Ring (also PowerUp on Modem ) and this option must be activated in the BIOS. The length of serial cable must not exceed 10 m. 2.3.3 Universal serial bus - USB To connect the touch-screen to a host computer the USB can be used, too. The connector is USB Type B, so a standard USB Type A to Type B cable can be used to connect the touch-screen with the host. The length of USB cable must not exceed 5 m. 2.3.4 Analogue Video - VGA There are two ways to apply video data. One of them is an analogue video signal over the VGA connector (High density 15 pin female SUB-D). Analogue resolutions to SXGA (1280x1024) at 75 MHz or UXGA (1600x1200) at 60 MHz are support. A 10 m VGA cable is tested with the em[view]-19t/d. 2.3.5 Digital video - DVI As noticed earlier there is a second way to apply video data, the digital input DVI. The reliable DVI port is operating up to 165 MHz (UXGA at 60 MHz), thus it can be connected to all compliant digital DVI transmitters. The length of the DVI-D cable must not exceed 10 m. The best picture results are obtained by setting the native resolution. The native resolution of the display is 1280 x 1024 (SXGA). 2.3.6 Display The panel is build as a thin film transistor liquid crystal display TFT-LCD with a diagonal screen of 19 and up to 16M colours. Janz Automationssysteme AG Rev. 1.0

If the em[view] is delivered without touch-screen there are no drivers needed. Using the serial interface only the PenMount DMC 9000 driver has to be installed. Is the USB interface used, the PenMount driver must be installed as well and an auxiliary driver for the USB transceiver chip FT-232R with virtual COM port (VCP) must be installed. A Linux kernel (newer than version 2.4.20) contains the VCP driver. Both drivers are receivable for several operating systems, visit the driver developer homepages: FTDI: PenMount: http://www.ftdichip.com/drivers/vcp.htm http://www.penmount.com/down.php 2.4.1 Windows XP driver installation for touch-screen on USB At first the USB virtual com port driver has to be downloaded, after that it must be installed. When plugging in the USB cable Windows notifies that new hardware is found. Don t search for Windows updates when asked (No, not this time). Now the driver must be installed from the location it is saved after download. Rev. 1.0 Janz Automationssysteme AG

2-12 emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation On this example it is saved on c:\temp\ftdi. Windows searches the driver for the FTDI chip at the specified location. When asked for continuing the installation even though the driver has not passed the Windows logo test, Continue Anyway. Janz Automationssysteme AG Rev. 1.0

emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation 2-13 After continuing the installation it is finish by confirming the Finish-Button. Now the USB virtual COM port driver is installed and Windows notifies that it has found another new hardware. The next section describes how to install the PenMount driver for the touch-screen. Rev. 1.0 Janz Automationssysteme AG

2-14 emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation 2.4.2 Windows XP driver installation for touch-screen on RS232 If the touch-screen is connected on the RS232 connector or the USB virtual COM port driver is installed the PenMount driver has to be installed. It can be downloaded at the address above. The driver installation is started by clicking the Setup executable in the PenMount folder. The license agreement must be confirmed. Janz Automationssysteme AG Rev. 1.0

emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation 2-15 The location where the driver will be installed to must be chosen. After choosing the location the driver will be installed and the device is searched. Rev. 1.0 Janz Automationssysteme AG

2-16 emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation Is the device found the installation is finished by clicking Finish. Janz Automationssysteme AG Rev. 1.0

emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Installation 2-17 2.4.3 Ubuntu Linux driver installation for touch-screen on RS232 or USB Download the correct driver for the installed OS. In this section the installation on an Ubuntu 8.04 is shown. Once the driver is downloaded (Ubuntu 8.04 Driver 2.2) the archive has to be unzipped somewhere with: gunzip PenMount Ubuntu8.04 Driver V2.2.tar.gz and tar -xvf PenMount Ubuntu8.04 Driver V2.2.tar. After unzipping the archive a folder pmlinux-ubuntu8.04 remains. Jumping into it with cd pmlinux-ubuntu8.04 and installing the driver with sudo./pm-setup. Choosing the model 4 (PenMount 9000). Now the difference is coming, when installing the touchscreen with RS232 choose the correct device (e.g. /dev/ttys0 while using COM1). When the touchscreen is connected to USB choose 5 for other serial devices and type in /dev/ttyusb0. This is the device where the FTDI driver mounts the found chip to. Baud rate 19200, right button, stream mode, 500 (for 500 ms hold time) and the driver is installed. Now restart the xserver (Ctrl + Alt + Backspace). Rev. 1.0 Janz Automationssysteme AG

3-18 emview-19t/d (User's Manual) Use of em[view]-19t/d 3 Use of em[view]-19t/d Once the em[view] is installed it can be used at once, it is already configured. The user is free to adjust the configuration at will. To do so, the installed on screen display (OSD) must be used.
