EXPECTATIONS

Okay So what about the Properties?

Just the facts: Order of Operations and Properties of real numbers

Important things to remember Parenthesis anything grouped including information above or below a fraction bar. Exponents anything in the same family as a power this includes radicals (square roots). Multiplication- this includes distributive property (discussed in detail later). Some items are grouped!!! Multiplication and Division are GROUPED from left to right (like reading a book- do whichever comes first. Addition and Subtraction are also grouped from left to right, do whichever comes first in the problem.

So really it looks like this.. Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtraction In order from left to right In order from left to right

16 SAMPLE PROBLEM #1 16 3 4(3 1) 22 11 Parenthesis 3 4(2) 22 11 16 4(8) 22 11 4(8) Exponents 22 11 32 22 11 32 2 Subtraction 30 This one is tricky! Remember: Multiplication/Division are grouped from left to right what comes 1 st? Division did now do the multiplication (indicated by parenthesis) More division

SAMPLE PROBLEM 3(2 3) 2 65 3(5) 2 65 2 2 Parenthesis Exponents 3(25) 65 75 65 10 5 2 2 2 Remember the division symbol here is grouping everything on top, so work everything up there first.multiplication Subtraction Division because all the work is done above and below the line

5.OA.1 Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols Let s read a word problem together and turn it into a numerical expression. Let s work together to draw a model to represent this problem.

Let s Do Some WORK Let s Try a Few Together: (29 18) + 14 2 + 6 64 8 x 2 25 + 18 6 1 [8 + (14 2)] x 3 20 Add parenthesis to make each expression true. 30 4 x 2 + 5 = 2 30 4 x 2 + 5 = 57

Your Turn Work with your tablemates to solve the following equations (simplify). Add parenthesis to make each expression true. 17 8 5 = 14 17 8 5 = 4 10 2 3 + 1 = 3 10 2 3 + 1 = 1
