Outline What is SEIS? Implementation Content Cooperation Infrastructure Next steps

What is SEIS? A Europe wide initiative that aims to improve sharing and re-use of information related to the environment* *Towards a Shared Environmental Information System (COM (2008)46)

Principles Environmental information should be: Managed as close as possible to its source Collected once, and shared with others for many purposes Readily available to easily fulfil reporting obligations Easily accessible to all users Accessible to enable comparisons at the appropriate geographical scale, and citizen participation Fully available to the general public, and at the national level in the relevant national language(s) Supported through common, free open software standards

SEIS Cookbook

SEIS implementation SEIS key streams for action: 1. Removing inconsistencies between EU data and Sharing policies 2. Streamlining the demand and supply of environmental data 3. Developing information and data infrastructures 4. Providing fit-for-purpose data for improved environmental monitoring and assessments.

EC Communication 7 March 2012 COM(2012)95 Improving the delivery of benefits from EU environment measures: Building confidence through better knowledge and responsiveness Objectives Engaging with MS to put in place more effective information systems on implementation Improve EU-level information Help ensure confidence in the information generated at national, regional and local levels Close important information gaps on land-cover monitoring [ ] => 7 th Environmental Action Programme should ensure a proper follow up

SEIS implementation EEA/Eionet focus 2012+ 1. Sharing European and National State of the Environment (SENSE* SOER2015) 2. Exploring use of Linked data for Reportnet 3. Capacity building within the EU and its Neighbourhood 4. Strengthening links and synergies between SEIS, INSPIRE, GMES, GEOSS, EU Digital Agenda and other emerging initiatives 5.
