INTRODUCTION This Midspan Power Sourcing Equipment (Midspan PSE) is an Alternative B Type 12-port Midspan Power Sourcing Equipment which uses the IEEE 802.3af draft standard to supply Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities. This Midspan PSE detects IEEE 802.3af-compliant Alternative B type network devices connected on the front ports, such as IP phones, wireless access points, and video devices among other devices. The Midspan PSE automatically supplies the DC voltage required by each connected appliance at a unique current required for that particular device. Using the Midspan PSE, you can use any 802.3af-draft-compliant network device without connecting the device separately to a power source. The Midspan PSE allows data and power to be transmitted over a category-5 unshielded twisted-paired or twisted-paired cable. It provides continuous data and policy-enabled telephony services by providing 802.3af-draft-compliant PoE over each front-panel RJ-45 port. - 1 -

Sample Application - 2 -

Parts Names and Functions Front Panel The front panel of the Midspan PSE, displayed below, has 12 pairs of switching ports supported. 1 Power LEDs Glows when the Midspan PSE is powered on. 2 Reset Use a pin-shaped item to reset this device when it is malfunctioning. 3 Console port RS232 Serial Port Connects to the serial port on your PC with the RS- 232 cable. The console port allows you to access the GUI screens and customize your network using the supplied menus and screens. The console port is a DB-9 standard serial port connector. You can use a straight-through DB-9 serial cable (Male/Female) to connect this Midspan PSE with a management station via this port. 4 Port connectors The Midspan PSE uses 12 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX RJ-45 (8-pin modular) port connectors. - 3 -

5 Status LED Rear Panel Glows when this Midspan PSE discovers a PD (power device) plugged. Status LED will keep glowing when the PD is successfully powered by this Midspan PSE. Dims when there s no PD detected. Flashes when there is short circuit or over-current being detected. Table2. Parts in the front panel 1 AC Power Connector 2 System Fans/Vents Plug the female end of the provided power cord into this connector, and the male end into the wall outlet. Input voltages ranges from 100 to 120 V. The fans and the vents are used to help cool the Midspan PSE. Always leave two inches of space around the Midspan PSE so that air can circulate and cool the Midspan PSE. - 4 -

HARDWARE INSTALLATION The Midspan PSE can be placed directly on your desktop, or mounted in a rack. Desktop Installation To connect the external power source, take the following steps in exactly this order: 1. Plug the cord from the Midspan PSE into the wall outlet. 2. Using the 2-pin connector, plug the external power source into the DC connector receptacle on the back of the Midspan PSE. Rack-Mounting Installation The Midspan PSE may stand alone, or may be mounted in a standard size, 19-inch rack. Rack mounting produces an orderly installation when you have a number of related network devices. The Midspan PSE is supplied with two mounting brackets and screws. These are used for rack mounting the unit. Follow these steps to install the Midspan PSE on a rack: 1. Disconnect all cables from the Midspan PSE before continuing the installation. 2. Attach a mounting bracket to each side of the Midspan PSE with the screws provided. 3. Slide the Midspan PSE into the rack and use the screws provided to secure the Midspan PSE to the rack. 4. Connect the power cord and verify that if the Midspan PSE is receiving adequate power. 5. Reconnect all cables. Connecting Other Power Devices Connect other power devices (PD) to the Midspan PSE with CAT 5 Ethernet cable. Plug one end of the CAT5 cable into one of the Power/Data Connector ports, and the other end into the PD s PoE compatible RJ-45 port. - 5 -

HOW TO MANAGE THE MIDSPAN PSE You can configure or monitor this Midspan PSE through the provided GUI utility saved in the included CD. Run the GUI Utility Run the GUI utility provided in the included CD. (Double-click setup.) The installation program will proceed to copy files automatically. Click OK to continue. - 6 -

Click the setup button as shown below to start the installation. Click OK to complete the setup. You may now run the utility program to setup your PSE. Go to Start Programs P6012S 1.1.10. - 7 -

The GUI Utility will appear the management screen. At the upper left corner of the GUI screen, click the Serial Link Setup tab to set port. Select the COM port of your computer in which you have the device plugged. - 8 -

The GUI utility will detect the connection and then the GUI screen will appear. You can have the system always auto refresh by pressing down the Enable Auto Refresh button. A B C D - 9 -

Basic GUI Utility Operation The GUI operating page shown in the above figure can be broken down into three major functional operating regions (A to C) and one informational region (D) as described below: A. System Setup & Control Main system level parameters are established in this section. Parameters in this region will be updated after clicking on the Update System Control button. B. System Info The hardware revision code and the version of firmware being run are shown in this region. The state of the Internal sequencer is shown in the Current Port Serviced field. The summation of the total system 48-V power consumption is also shown. C. Port Specific Control Each tab of this section corresponds to each group of 12 ports in the system. A tab can be activated once the Ports in System parameter is set and updated with Update System Control. Parameters that are set for specific ports are updated once the Send Port Control is pressed down. Parametric updates in the parametric region of each port column will auto-refresh if Enable Auto Refresh is pressed down. D. Port Parametric Info - 10 -

Real time and calculated port parameters are displayed in this region. The region to the left allows custom modification of these engineering units through the introduction of alternate gain and offset values. Details as how to set the respective fields shown in the above three functional operating regions (A-C) are separately described in the following sections. A. System Setup & Control Item Ports in System Fault Cycles/Power Cycles Master Enable Line Frequency Rejection Accept Legacy Types (Type 1~4) SW POR MSP 1 Description Number of ports in the system. Reserved component of the power management function in a future firmware release. This enable is AND d with the Port Enable and acts as a global system port on/off control. Sets the PD A/d converter for optimal AD hum rejection. Set the value to the AC power line frequency. Select the Legacy detection type used. Type 1= Accept port capacitance 6o uf < Cp <470uf) Software initiates a reset of the MSP device. 1 MSP: The Micro Controller of the Midspan PSE. - 11 -

SW POR TPS 2 Pause P6012S Port LED Direct Write Software initiates a reset of the TPS device. Pause P6012S halts the device. When not selected, the firmware will write port indicator status information directly to the port status LEDs. When selected, the port status LEDs can be controlled directly from the corresponding port LED control of the GUI. PD Discovery R (ohms): PD Discovery resistance limits (Upper/Lower Limit) If the default 802.3af PD discover resistance value limits need to be customized, they can be entered into the upper and lower limit fields. Startup Overload Delay (ms) Enables the current limited overload condition at startup to be extended past 50ms. Enter a value from 1 to 255 msec. P6012S 12C Address (dec) Update System Control Reserved Host 12C port address setting. It is necessary to press this button to enter the values of this frame into the system RAM. The system will then respond to the stored RAM values. 2 TPS: The Midspan PSE Power Manager - 12 -
