Introduction This Compatibility list contains information for following Symantec NetBackup PureDisk versions: Symantec NetBackup PureDisk 6.6.1 Symantec NetBackup PureDisk Release History PureDisk Version Description Release date 6.6.1 NetBackup PureDisk 6.6.1 Release September, 2010 Page 4

PureDisk at a glance PureDisk exists out of 2 parts, a PureDisk Operating System and a PureDisk Application which will be installed on top of this OS. The Puredisk Application software contains different logical components. The 2 main components are the MetaBase Engine (MBE) and the Content Router (CR). The MBE is the repository database containing the meta information of the backed up data. The CR contains the actual data. The Logical components can be installed combined on 1 single server, but they can also be installed separately on different servers. Multiple Servers can be grouped together in what is being referred to as a Storage Pool, to grow the useable back end addressable storage using the same deduplication baseline. Page 5

PureDisk Server Nodes HW/Storage Support Hardware requirements table. Node Type OS All-in-one PDLinux 6.6.1 Dedicated Content Router node Dedicated MetaBase Engine node PDLinux 6.6.1 PDLinux 6.6.1 Min. number of Processors 2 x Dualcore 1 x Dualcore 1 x Dualcore Minimum number of Ethernet Interfaces HA Normal 3 1 3 1 3 1 Maximum CR Storage Capacity 4 TB 4 GB 8 TB 10 GB 16 TB 20 GB 4 TB 4 GB 8 TB 8 GB 16 TB 16 GB N/A 4 GB Minimum RAM requirements N/A 4 GB The maximum amount of addressable Content Router storage within 1 single Storage Pool is 100 TB for classic PureDisk Remote Office and 200 TB for the NetBackup PureDisk Deduplication Option (PDDO). N/A 4 GB Node type The node type column refers to the way PureDisk was installed on a specific hardware layout: - All-in-one: All the PureDisk logical components were stored on one single HW server. - Dedicated Content Router: the Content Router is the only installed component on a HW server. - Dedicated MetaBase engine: the MetaBase engine is the only installed component on a HW server. PureDisk Operating System. PureDisk is only supported on PureDisk Operating System (PDLINUX). PDLINUX is delivered as part of the DVD in the PureDisk media kit. PDLINUX is based on SUSE Linux Server 10/SP2 for x86-x64. No modifications to the kernel or drivers have been made to maintain full compatibility. PDLINUX only contains the SLES 10 components that are required to run the PureDisk application software. Page 6

Maintenance, patching and support of the PureDisk Operating System are done by Symantec. They are done on a regular basis and are provided through normal updates. Patches or updates provided by other parties are not supported. PureDisk is not supported on any other Operating system besides PDLINUX. The PureDisk application software is modular software. You can install all of the components on a single server, what is referred to as an all-in-one configuration. For larger configurations you will need to install multiple servers with PDLINUX and PureDisk component software to build a PureDisk storage pool. These servers are PureDisk nodes. The PureDisk getting started guide gives information regarding the scalability requirements of PureDisk nodes. Processors Each PureDisk node requires a processor that is compatible with x86-x64 specifications. For best performance, Symantec recommends Intel Xeon (64 bit) or AMD Opteron processors. PDLINUX is not compatible with Itanium processors. On an all-in-one node that runs all PureDisk components, two dual-core processors are required. On a dedicated content router or MetaBase engine node, a single dual-core processor is required. Higher-speed processors enhance system performance. Greater numbers of processors/cores per node do not enhance system performance. Network Interfaces (NIC) Symantec recommends that you use enterprise-class GB Ethernet network interface cards (NICs), such as an Intel PRO or equivalent. PureDisk requires that each server you configure contain at least one NIC. If you want to enable high availability PureDisk, each server that you want to include in a cluster requires (at least) three NICs. Two of the additional NICs are needed for the cluster s private network. Do not configure an IP address on the additional two NICs. These additional NICs are used exclusively by the Veritas Cluster Server software. Additional information concerning PureDisk HA and Clustering is provided in the PureDisk 6.6.1 Storage Pool Installation Guide. PureDisk supports only static IP addresses. PureDisk does not support DHCP. PureDisk 6.6.1 can utilize additional NICs available in the server nodes to create dedicated networks within the storage pool. With dedicated networks, you can increase the performance during backups, restores and replication. Additional information regarding dedicated networks for backups, restores and replication are provided in the PureDisk 6.6.1 Administrator s Guide. Page 7

Memory PureDisk requires error-correcting code (ECC) random-access memory (RAM). The Hardware requirements table above provides the minimum required memory on a single server which is depending on the components it runs. Storage HW Requirements Each server must be connected to internal and/or external disk storage. The total maximum amount of storage supported in one single Storage Pool is 100TB, divided over all the Content Router Nodes within that Pool. The storage can consist of any of the following: Direct-attached storage (DAS) over SATA, serial-attached SCSI (SAS), or SCSI. A storage area network (SAN) or disk array over fibre channel. A SAN or disk array over iscsi is not supported with this release. PureDisk supports network-attached storage (NAS) over NFS only with NetApp Filers. No other NAS devices are supported. NFS v3 is the only supported NFS version. NFS mounts can only be used for the Content Router mount path i.e. /Storage/data with sync mount option: (Mount t nfs o rw,sync, <server> <mountpoint>) rw,bg,hard,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,vers=3,proto=tcp. HA is not supported with NFS Storage. DR procedures do not work with NFS Storage. File System support PureDisk 6.6.1 includes Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 MP2. By default, PureDisk installs the Storage Foundation file system, VxFS, and installs the Storage Foundation volume manager, VxVM. Symantec recommends that you use a storage array that is compatible with this version of Veritas Storage Foundation. For more information and a total list of arrays that VxVM/VxFS supports in the Storage Foundation 5.0 MP2 release, see the hardware compatibility list at the following Web site: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/289200.htm Storage Foundation 5.0 MP2 supports iscsi attached arrays, see the SF hardware compatibility list for supported hardware. OS Drivers Use a storage controller, RAID controller or host bus adaptor (HBA) that is compatible with SUSE Linux Server 10 for x86-x64. If you are using hardware components that SUSE Linux Server for x86-x64 does not support by default, obtain the necessary driver from your hardware vendor. Page 8

For information on SUSE Linux Server for x86-x64 compatibility, see the following Web site: http://www.novell.com/partnerguide/section/481.html Removable Media The PureDisk 6.6.1 release is an upgrade only, no media (DVD) kit is provided with this release. Power Supply Symantec recommends a redundant power supply in PureDisk nodes. In addition, use an Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect the PureDisk nodes. If you turn off a PureDisk storage node in any uncontrolled way, it can result in backup data corruption or data loss. If your UPS requires a USB, Ethernet, or serial port to connect to the PureDisk node, ensure that they are available on the node also. If you use an Ethernet port, Symantec recommends that you provide an additional port in the device. Page 9

PureDisk Storage Pool requirements in VMware environment PureDisk can be installed on a VMware ESX environment under the following conditions: It assumes that the ESX server is installed and running and that the ESX server administrator has operational knowledge on how to perform the following actions on the ESX server: Work with the Virtual Infrastructure Client Create and configure virtual machines Create and configure resource groups Create and configure virtual networks Apply patches and work in maintenance mode Advanced ESX functions like load balancing, clustering and high availability using vmotion are not supported. The customer itself will define the backup strategy of the ESX server and its storage. There are three use cases for running PureDisk Remote Office Edition on an VMware ESX server. Depending on whether the ESX server is dedicated or shared, we will take advantage of the virtualization capacities of the ESX environment to setup multi-node PureDisk environments on 1 physical ESX server. Remote Office Shared ESX Infrastructure ESX Infrastructure: shared between PureDisk and other VMware guests All-in-one PureDisk server with a storage capacity of 500 GB to 1 TB PureDisk VMware guest running in a VMDK file on top of a VMFS partition on the internal or direct attached storage Typical client agent count: up to 10 systems Remote Office Dedicated ESX Infrastructure ESX Infrastructure dedicated for PureDisk VMware guests Multi-node PureDisk server with a storage capacity up to 8 TB 3 to 4 PureDisk VMware guests using Raw Device Mapping to access the storage Dedicated ESX Infrastructure ESX Infrastructure dedicated for PureDisk VMware guests Multi-node PureDisk server with a storage capacity up to 24 TB 3 to 10 PureDisk VMware guests using Raw Device Mapping to access the storage General Hardware Requirements PureDisk supports ESX Server 3.x and 4.x and higher. Please refer to the ESX compatibility guides for ESX compatible hardware and software: Page 10

Hardware not on these lists will fall under VMware s Third Party Hardware and Software Support policy: Third Party Hardware and Software Support Policy Unless explicitly supported in VMware's Compatibility Guides or any other VMware interoperability guide, third party hardware and software will be treated as follows: VMware Global Support Services (GSS) will assist customers in problem analysis to determine whether or not the technical issue is related to the 3rd party hardware or software. In order to isolate the Error, we reserve the right to request that the 3rd party hardware or software be removed. This will only be done where we have reason to believe the issue is related to the 3rd party hardware or software. If VMware GSS cannot directly identify the root cause or it is reasonably suspected that the problem is related to the 3rd party hardware or software, we will direct the customer to open a support request with the 3rd party vendor's support organization. The minimum hardware requirements are specific to each use case and listed below. For each vcpu a physical CPU core should be available on the dedicated ESX servers. Hardware Requirements Shared Remote Office ESX Server The PureDisk all-in-one VMware guest requires the following ESX resources: 2 vcpu 4 GB RAM 500 MB to 1 TB on the VMFS storage partition Hardware Requirements Dedicated Remote Office ESX Server The PureDisk VMware guests require the following ESX resources: 4 to 6 vcpu 8 to 12 GB RAM up to 8 TB of internal or direct attached storage accessed using Raw Device Mapping Hardware Requirements ESX Server The PureDisk VMware guests require the following ESX resources: 4 to 16 vcpu 8 to 32 GB RAM up to 24 TB of FC SAN based storage accessed using Raw Device Mapping Contact your Symantec Sales Engineer to get full installation instructions for installing PureDisk on an ESX server.
