A1 Terminology Urichuck Resource:http://whatis.techtarget.com/ Term Definition Image Blog Short for Web log, a blog is a Web page that serves as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual. Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author. A blog is a website on which the author posts entries in a journal format. Cookies A text file created by the server computer when a user enters information into a website. The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and customize web pages for them.. CPU CPU (central processing unit) is an older term for processor and microprocessor, the central unit in a computer containing the logic circuitry that performs the instructions of a computer's programs. Digital Literacy Digital literacy is the ability to find, evaluate, utilize, share, and create content using information technologies and the Internet.

Directory A directory is, in general, an approach to organizing information, the most familiar example being a telephone directory. Encryption Encryption is the conversion of electronic data into another form, called ciphertext, which cannot be easily understood by anyone except authorized parties. Firewall A firewall is a network security system, either hardware or software based, that controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on a set of rules. Hyperlink On the Web or other hypertext systems, hyperlink is a synonym for both link and hypertext link.

Information and communication technology ICT (information and communications technology - or technologies) is an umbrella term that includes any communication device or application, encompassing: radio, television, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning. Internet The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers).

ISP An ISP (Internet service provider) is a company that provides individuals and other companies access to the Internet and other related services such as Web site building and virtual hosting. Intranet An intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise. It may consist of many interlinked local area networks and also use leased lines in the wide area network. LAN A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link. Network In information technology, a network is a series of points or nodes interconnected by communication paths.

Newsgroups A newsgroup is a discussion about a particular subject consisting of notes written to a central Internet site and redistributed through Usenet, a worldwide network of news discussion groups. Operating system The software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals. Peripheral devices Is any computer device that is not part of the essential computer (the processor, memory, and data paths) but is situated relatively close by.

Phishing Phishing is an e-mail fraud method in which the perpetrator sends out legitimate-looking email in an attempt to gather personal and financial information from recipients. RAM RAM (random access memory) is the place in a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor. Search Engine On the Internet, a search engine is a coordinated set of programs that includes: A spider that goes to every page or representative pages on every Website that wants to be searchable and reads it, using hypertext links on each page to discover and read a site's other pages

Spam Spam is unsolicited e-mail on the Internet. Spyware In general, spyware is any technology, such as tracking software, that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge. Stand Alone Environment Does not pull resources from outside networks or equipment. It is self reliant. URL A URL (Uniform Resource Locator, previously Universal Resource Locator) - usually pronounced by sounding out each letter but, in some quarters, pronounced "Earl" - is the unique address for a file that is accessible on the Internet.

USB USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a plug-andplay interface between a computer and add-on devices, such as media players, keyboards, telephones, digital cameras, scanners, flash drives, joysticks and printers. WAN A wide area network (WAN) is a geographically dispersed telecommunications network. The term distinguishes a broader telecommunication structure from a local area network (LAN). Web Browser A Web browser is an application program that provides a way to look at and interact with all the information on the World Wide Web.

Website A Web site is a related collection of World Wide Web (WWW) files that includes a beginning file called a home page. A company or an individual tells you how to get to their Web site by giving you the address of their home page. WWW A technical definition of the World Wide Web is: all the resources and users on the Internet that are using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
