Chapter 1 Preface This is a Preliminary version of the manual intended to provide advance information on the Addonics Technologies external Slim DVD drive. The information is as complete and as accurate as possible as of the publication date, but will be superseded and updated periodically by revised manuals. The contents are subject to change without notice. General Information The Addonics Technologies Pocket DVD drive is a miniaturized DVD drive that is designed for both PC and Laptop with CARDBUS, USB or Firewire interface. Features Multiple power alternatives; External AC/DC universal input adapter or Keyboard port adapter. Ultra light weights and compacts. Connects to any PC via CARDBUS, USB or Firewire interface. 32-bit or 16-bit data transfers. Chapter 2 Getting Started This chapter will walk you through the installation of your external Pocket DVD. Before getting started, make sure that you have the following items: Pocket DVD CARDBUS, USB or Firewire cable with 36 pin connector Diskette of driver software AC/DC adapter or Keyboard port adapter This User Guide SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Pentium II 300 MHz or Greater for CardBus and Firewire connection Pentium III or Greater for USB connection CardBus/PCMCIA Type I or Type II Slot, USB or FireWire Port (depending on the type of interface cable) Minimum 64MB RAM minimum hard disk space: 50MB Video RAM: minimum 2MB One of the Following Operating Systems: Windows 95, 98, Me or 2000 Addonics Technologies PocketDVD Users guide v2.0-5 -

Chapter 3 Power Source Option When used as a CD ROM, the Pocket DVD can be powered by your notebook from either the PCMCIA connection or the keyboard port using the keyboard power cable. In either case, make sure your notebook battery is fully charged. Some notebook computers battery may not supply the required voltage to power the PocketCD98 drive. In this situation, the external AC/DC power adapter will be needed. A. Using PCMCIA cable to get power Make sure the power switch on the back of the drive is in the PCMCIA position (move the switch to the cable connection side). Make sure the side switch on the CardBus / PCMCIA cable is set to PCMCIA mode. Connect the cable to the drive and insert the CardBus / PCMCIA card into an open PCMCIA slot on the computer. The small LED light on the top of the drive should light up in green, indicating power and drive ready. B. Using Keyboard power cable to get power Make sure your computer power is off The power switch on the back of the drive should be in the AC/DC position (closest to the DC 5V jack) Connect the PS/II keyboard power cable between the PS/II keyboard port of the Notebook and the DC input on the drive. Power up the computer, the small LED light on the top of the drive should light up in green, indicating power to the drive. Chapter 4 Interface Installation CardBus / PCMCIA cable installation The Addonics CardBus PCMCIA card has an option switch can allow you to choose using either PCMCIA mode or CardBus mode. The switch position is as follows: CardBus PCMCIA Front view Factory default setting is CardBus mode Side View Cardbus and PCMCIA selection switch. CardBus mode move the switch to the side with the DOT indicator CardBus & Firewire mode currently supports WIN 95/98/Me & 2000 only. USB mode supports 98/Me & 2000 only For DOS, WIN 3.1x and WIN NT, the switch must be in PCMCIA mode. In CardBus mode, your DVD drive will need to draw power from the AC/DC adapter or from your notebook via the keyboard port using the PS/II power cable. A). WIN 95 and 98 Installation (DO NOT RUN SETUP FROM THE DRIVER DISK, SETUP IS FOR DOS OR WIN 3.1 USING PCMCIA MODE ONLY) 1. Power on your system and wait for the Desktop screen. 2. Connect the CardBus PCMCIA cable and external AC/DC adapter (or the PS/II power cable) into the back of your PocketDVD. 3. Plug the PCMCIA card end of the cable into the PCMCIA slot on the side of your computer. 4. The system will automatically identify the new card and ask to load the driver. 5. Insert the driver diskette in A drive and follow the instruction on the screen to load Addonics CardBus IDE Controller. All drivers and necessary files are located in the driver diskette under the sub-directory WINDOW95. 6. When finished installation, a PCMCIA card icon will appear in the lower right-hand of the Window s Task Bar. 7. Click on the My Computer icon. Your PocketDVD will appear as a CD drive icon. Installation for Sony and Sharp Notebook If you encountered system locked up using our standard installation procedures (most common with Window 98 SE, Sharp and Sony Notebook), please try to reinstall using the procedures outlined below: 1. Before installing the CardBus driver, make sure the CardBus is not inserted into the PC Card slot. 2. Boot up the system and insert the CardBus driver diskette into Floppy Drive A 3. Click on the START button, then SETTINGs and open the CONTROL PANEL 4. Click on the ADD NEW HARDWARE icon 5. Click NEXT and NEXT again, the screen will say WINDOWS WILL NOW SEARCH FOR PNP DEVICES, DO YOU WANT WINDOWS TO SEARCH FOR YOUR NEW HARDWARE. 6. Choose NO, I WANT TO SELECT THE HARDWARE FROM A LIST 7. Click NEXT 8. Select HARD DISK CONTROLLERS from the hardware list 9. Click NEXT, then click HAVE DISK 10. Type A:\Window95, then click OK 11. Highlight ADDONICS CARDBUS IDE CONTROLLER, then click NEXT,NEXT and FINISH. 12. Shut down the system. Reboot the system with the CardBus inserted inside the PC CARD slot. Make sure the DVD drive is connected to the other end of the CardBUS cable and the Drive is powered on. 13. The initialization of the DVD drive may take up to 40 seconds. During this time, mouse moving may be sluggish. After completing the initialization, a new CD ROM drive icon should appear in the My Computer. You are now ready to use the DVD drive to install the Power DVD MPEG II decoding software. Addonics Technologies PocketDVD Users guide v2.0-9 -

USB Cable installation Attach the USB-IDE cable s MC 36 Connector (Picture 1) to your Addonics Pocket Drive firm and securely you should not be able to disconnect the cable without pressing the release notch. Picture 1 (USB Cables may vary from the picture) USB drivers Installation (For Win98 and Win98SE) 1. Make sure your computer is up and running 2. Verify that all cables are connected and there is power to the drive. 3. Insert the USB cable to the USB Port. A "New Hardware Found" message shall pops up. 4. Follow the ON SCREEN wizard and point to the location of A:\USBWIN98 for the driver. 5. Let Windows finish the installation and that s it. 6. Double click My Computer icon and see if you have an extra drive letter for the drive. 7. You may now access the drive. For Windows ME and Windows 2000 There are NO additional drivers required Addonics Technologies PocketDVD Users guide v2.0-10 -

Fire wire Cable Installation * Note Before you start Since some notebook computers comes only with Four Pin Firewire port on the computer, they can use the BUILT-IN hub on Addonics Firewire cable to connect their Four to Six pin Male firewire cable. Your computer should be up and running. Always turn on the device (i.e. Hard Drive, ZIP, LS-120, and CD- ROM) power before you attach the FIREWIRE-IDE, USB or PCMCIA cable to your computer. For Desktop Computer, No power is needed for DVD with Firewire Cable Attach the FIREWIRE-IDE cable s MC 36 Connector (Picture 1) to your Addonics Pocket Drive firm and securely you should not be able to disconnect the cable without pressing the release notch. Firewire DVD Installation For Win98SE and Win2000 (Note for Windows98 SE only: After plugging in the cable some system might prompt you for Win98SE CD, in case you don t have the Win98SE CD and the wizard prompt you for a. NTMAP.SYS please type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS b. NTMAPHLP.PDR please type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS If the system did not prompt you for anything just follow the steps below) 1. Make sure the Firewire cable is securely attach from the back of the drive. 2. When External power is attach to the drive make sure that the switch on the Back of the drive is set to AC/DC. 3. Power on the system, on the Window Desktop, double click on the MY COMPUTER icon. 4. Plug the FIREWIRE-IDE cable s FIREWIRE Connector into your computer s FIREWIRE port. 5. Wait for a few seconds, your computer may blink for a moment as well. 6. If all is well you should see a CD-ROM icon under my computer. Addonics Technologies PocketDVD Users guide v2.0-12 -

7. You may now access your DVD drive. MPEG II Software installation: 1. Place the MPEG II software CD in the DVD-ROM. 2. In My Computer double click the CD-ROM icon. Chapter 5 Playing Audio CDs You can use the Addonics Pocket CD or Pocket DVD drive to play regular music CDs. To listen to the music from regular music CDs, you will need to attach a headset or an amplifying speaker to the Audio Line Out at the back of the drive. To play the audio music through the computer, you will need to attach an audio cable (commonly available from any electronic store) between the Audio Line Out of the drive and the Audio Line In on the computer.
