INTRODUCTION Every business today has important data they can t afford to operate without, from simple spreadsheets to entire physical servers. That data has strategic business value, and by keeping it protected, MSPs allow their clients to focus on what matters most: growing a thriving business. The Intronis ECHOplatform is the first data protection platform built exclusively for IT services providers. It puts the full power of Intronis automatic, encrypted cloud backup technologies in one easy-to-use platform. With the Intronis ECHOplatform, you can easily deploy data protection strategies to all of your customers, meeting each of your SMBs unique risk, cost, and recovery needs and profiting along the way. In this white paper, you will learn about the many features of this solution and how it can help protect your clients important data. EASE-OF-USE You already know how crucial it is to back up your clients data, but did you know that online backup is also effortless? Intronis aims to make your life easier by providing several user-friendly features including simple installation, automatic backup, off-site storage, scalability, and 24/7 file restoration. Simple Installation Forget installing drives and changing tapes! Those methods are labor-intensive and can take hours or even days to complete depending upon the size of the business. With the Intronis ECHOplatform, setting up the solution involves the simple process of signing up online and installing the software on the computer or server. Within minutes, you are backing up files automatically on a schedule of your choice. After the initial backup, subsequent backups take mere minutes to complete because only new or modified files are uploaded. Automatic Backup With the Intronis ECHOplatform, data backups are completely automatic and you can also manually initiate a backup at any time. Once the software is installed, you will create a backup set. The backup set is the list of files that you want to back up along with the schedule of when you want the backups to occur. You do not have to select each and every file that you wish to protect because the software includes wizards that make it effortless to choose the files for your backup set. The Intronis ECHOplatform allows you to select multiple folders, exclude certain folders, and choose individual files to backup. Once you finish selecting what to back up, our software can calculate how much data you have chosen. 3
Scheduling backups is also easy. The Intronis ECHOplatform gives you the option of setting a different start time for each day of the week. You also can choose not to run backups on certain days. Or, you may want to keep the default schedule, which is to backup each night Monday through Friday. In addition to being able to edit or change a backup set, you can also set up multiple backup sets. Multiple backup sets are useful, for example, if you want to back up the same files more than once a day or back up certain files daily and other files weekly. Backup Status Dashboard The Intronis ECHOplatform is equipped with a backup status dashboard that offers partners immediate, real-time visibility into the status of their clients backups. From this view, you receive a capsule look at all of your clients statuses and are notified of backup failures or warnings as they occur. You can then click through to each account to resolve errors or review additional details. An icon on the dashboard also notifies you if the Intronis backup agent is disconnected, immediately providing visibility into a common root of a failed backup. Off-Site Storage With the Intronis ECHOplatform, all backed up data is automatically transmitted to multiple off-site data centers via a secure Internet channel. If your clients are currently storing backups on portable media, such as tapes or disks, at their home or business, this online method would prevent the loss of data in the event of a natural or man-made disaster such as fire or theft. If clients do bring portable media backups off-site, the Intronis solution eliminates the hassle of having to physically transport backup media to a facility. Scalability Now you will never need to worry about purchasing more hardware to support the growth of your managed services business. With the Intronis ECHOplatform, which is available for a flat-rate with unlimited local and cloud storage, you can never run out of storage space. We make it possible for your account to grow with your needs. File Restoration 24/7 Let s face it you could have the most powerful and most secure backup method around, but it is useless if you can t easily recover your files when you need them. That is why we have made restoring files simple and reliable. In fact, you can start restoring your files in seconds with just a few clicks of your mouse. Restore files when you want, as often as you want. You have the ability to retrieve individual files, revisions of files, entire folders, or backup sets. Or you can recover all of your data files in the event you experience a complete system failure or data loss. 4
To restore individual items, you can log in to the Intronis ECHOplatform, navigate to your customer s computer, and choose the data you would like to retrieve by clicking on the file name. The data will then be downloaded directly to the customer s computer, decrypted, and then restored to the original location or another specified location on the system. In the event of a complete system failure, a full data recovery can be initiated in just minutes. The recovery procedure can be performed on any Windows-based computer not just the computer where the data was originally backed up. Simply log in to the Intronis ECHOplatform and access the file catalog (the list of all of the files backed up), which will allow the user full control to restore his or her data. SECURITY The Intronis ECHOplatform offers several features that provide maximum security when backing up and archiving data. Files are first packaged to ensure that bandwidth is minimized during transmission. The data is then encrypted (transformed from plain text into nonsensical cipher text) using a unique 256-bit encryption key to ensure that files cannot be accessed by others. For added security, each encrypted file is sent over the Internet via a secure channel, and then stored in SSAE-16 certified secure data centers located in the U.S. or in Canada. The Intronis ECHOplatform includes multiple safeguards to prevent denial of service attacks or portal hacking, and our cloud architecture is built to protect against outside threats. Data in our cloud is stored as generic objects that can only be decrypted and reassembled by our customers agent, preventing our data centers from being exploited. Reliability The Intronis ECHOplatform leverages technology designed to ensure our partners enjoy a high level of data availability. Locally, our Safe Catalog process verifies the integrity of the file list before any backups or restores run to make sure that we are always uploading a valid, reliable copy of your catalog. Separate scans are also performed at each of our remote data centers to again ensure that your data is completely intact. If we detect even the slightest irregularity in data at rest within a particular data center, we will immediately replace this data with the verified copy stored in our other location. This is just one of the benefits of working with a cloud backup provider that offers access to multiple data centers, and it is part of the reason why the Intronis ECHOplatform enjoys an availability rating of 99.999 percent. 5
Encryption The Intronis ECHOplatform encrypts each file using 256-bit AES encryption technology. When you first configure the software, you will choose a 48-character string that will then be converted into a 256-bit encryption key. Only you will have access to this encryption key. It will never be transmitted over the Internet and it is never stored on our servers. This means that only you can access your files. Each file that you back up is encrypted using this key and remains encrypted until you restore it and it returns to your computer. How strong is 256-bit AES encryption? Well, let s put it this way. In June 2003, 256-AES was approved by the United States National Security Agency (NSA) for use encrypting the U.S. government s documents classified TOP SECRET. Transmission In addition, the software communicates with the Intronis servers using SSL (Secure Socket Layers) technology. This is the same encryption technology used by Internet browsers when a user enters a secured site such as an online bank. As a result, the data is encrypted twice. It is encrypted at all times using the 256-bit AES encryption, and it is encrypted again while it s being sent over the Internet. Storage Your clients data is stored (in encrypted form) in secure SSAE-16 certified data backup centers, located thousands of miles apart from each other. Each data center has 24/7 monitoring and advanced security measures such as biometric controlled access as well as backup generators and redundant connections to the Internet. Canadian Data Center Intronis recently added a data center in Montreal to ensure that channel partners in Canada are able to comply with that country s federal and provincial regulations, which restrict how and where data is managed. Data stored in the Canadian Data Center will never leave that country s borders and complies with the same strict security requirements as our U.S. data centers. ADVANCED TECHNICAL FEATURES Intronis has spent a great deal of time and research to bring our customers advanced features that provide optimum functionality for backing up and restoring data. These features include bare metal restore, virtual machine backup, Exchange and SQL data protection, multiple file revisions, and logs and reports. 6
Bare Metal Restore Image backups from Intronis enables partners to safeguard all of their clients physical machines from business continuity threats, such as accidental file deletion, hardware failure, or natural disaster. The Intronis ECHOplatform allows you to back up entire servers, desktops, or laptops as images and restore data to the same or a different physical machine. You can also recover to dissimilar hardware (a replacement machine with a different hardware configuration than the original machine) in the event of total system failure. Our Point-in-Time Restore feature allows you to recover to a point in time at the volume level of the restore, allowing for a large degree of flexibility in the event your systems were impacted by data corruption or viruses. For example, you can choose to recover your Boot Volume from the most recent backup while recovering your data volume from a backup a week ago. Physical-to-Virtual Image Recovery The Intronis ECHOplatform also includes a physical to virtual recovery (P2V) option. Images are restored as dynamic virtual hard disks (VHD or VHDX) and in a manner compatible with Microsoft Hyper-V, allowing partners to create virtual machines from restored images. You can also mount backup images as a drive letter or folder. This enables quick and easy file exploration and extraction. Supported on Server 2008 R2, SBS 2011, Server 2012/R2, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1, our imaging solution lets you back up any number of volumes locally or on a network share. The value of the Intronis physical imaging solution is in its speed. You can back up millions of files in hours, compared to the days it would take to run a similar backup via traditional file and folder solutions. Backups can be run on a recurring-interval or calendar-based schedule and are stored as reverse incrementals, which means that the most recent backups will be the fastest to restore. Business Availability with VMware and QuickSpin The combination of VMware integration and rapid recovery with the QuickSpin disaster recovery feature enables Intronis partners to confidently provide their customers with complete business availability for VMware virtual machines where and when needed. As a leading virtualization platform, VMware provides businesses with the opportunity to conserve computing resources while saving physical space and money through the creation of virtual machines (VMs). The Intronis VMware backup plugin allows you to back up and restore multiple VMs to the cloud, local vault, or both, using a single agent. Intronis VM backups are able to take full system images of 7
your business critical VMs without requiring an agent or software installation on each VM or even on each host. Features include the use of Change Block Tracking (CBT) for speedier incremental backups, flexible data retention and archiving settings, 256-bit AES encryption for maximum data protection, and support for clustered environments. The QuickSpin data recovery tool allows MSPs to recover VMware virtual machines on-site in the event of a primary server failure. With QuickSpin, MSPs can perform production or test recoveries with an RPO of 15 minutes. By utilizing our innovative reverse incremental backup to store historical versions of your VMs, we not only ensure failover in case of a disaster is almost instantaneous, but we can also roll your QuickSpin VMs back to a previous backup with little impact on recovery time. And because QuickSpin is priced on a fixed per-host cost, you don t have to worry about the number of VMs you have or the number of CPU sockets in your host affecting your bottom line. See the detailed Technical Specifications on our website for more information. Virtual Data Protection with Hyper-V Backup Support The Intronis Hyper-V backup solution is a native plugin that allows you to back up any number of Hyper-V VMs on a single host to the cloud, local vault, or both, using a single agent. You can store an unlimited number of historical versions of each VM with the same level of granularity you can expect from other backup types. VMs are stored encrypted and compressed, and protected VMs are quiesced to guarantee a consistent backup. You can also customize automated backup scheduling and define long-term archiving rules. Recovering protected VMs is simple and flexible. You can select any number of VMs to restore as well as any revision. When recovered, each VM is contained in its own folder in the chosen directory, and the files within each folder maintain the file structure established prior to backup. Restoring the VM as files lets you recover your clients data the way you want. You can import the protected VM directly into Hyper-V by using that platform s Import tool and selecting the desired VM folder. You can also attach the Hyper-V VHDs to an existing virtual machine, or mount a restored VHD file as a drive for simple file exploration and extraction. Plus, you can choose to delete entire VMs or individual revisions if desired. See the detailed Technical Specifications on our website for more information. 8
Microsoft Exchange Plugin The Intronis ECHOplatform gives you the power to back up your clients Microsoft Exchange 2000, Exchange 2003, Exchange 2007, Exchange 2010, and Exchange 2013 data. With Exchange, you can perform both full and incremental backups. Plus, you can customize your backup schedule. Microsoft SQL Server Plugin With the Intronis SQL Server Plugin, your clients server will never experience any downtime during a backup. You can perform full and differential SQL backups. The plugin runs seamlessly in the background as a service, never interrupting or shutting down the SQL databases. It takes minutes to configure the SQL plugin and, once completed, backups will run automatically. You can even run multiple SQL backups per day without interrupting your clients normal workflow. See detailed Technical Specifications on our website for more information. Multiple Revisions With the Intronis ECHOplatform, you can store an unlimited number of versions of the same file (by default, it stores the last 10 versions of each file). So, if you have certain files or databases that are updated every day or every week, you can always go back to a previous version if you need to. Go back to yesterday. Go back to last year. Plus, you never again have to worry about accidentally deleting the information in a file or overwriting a file by mistake. Intronis also offers a powerful revision rule wizard that lets you manage how old versions of files are stored. You can set the number of revisions for each file, folder, program, or wildcard. So now you can keep an unlimited number of copies of your clients contact database, while only keeping a few copies of their Outlook PST file. Logs and Reports How do you know your backups actually worked? The Intronis ECHOplatform logs and reports show you what was backed up and when. With detailed statistics and information about each file that is backed up or restored, you never have to wonder if your backups really worked. Did a specific file get backed up? Just check the log. Receive Email Notifications If you want even more assurance that your backups are functioning, you have the option of receiving automatic email notifications following every successful backup. You can turn this option on and off whenever you want from either the local software or by managing your account from the platform. 9
