ENGLISH VDV Distance Meter The Klein Tools Distance Meter determines the length of a particular cable by measuring the total capacitance of the cable attached to the unit and comparing that to a preset or user defined capacitance per foot variable. The Klein Tools Distance Meter has two alligator clip leads, an RJ-style twisted pair plug and a coaxial F-connector jack for input into the meter. The unit comes pre-programmed with nominal length constants for the following cables: User mode allows the user to adjust the capacitance per foot constant, based on the cable that needs to be tested. The Klein Tools Distance Meter is powered by a standard 9V battery. 4.9" x 2.7" x 1.4" (12.3 x 6.9 x 3.5 cm) 7.5 oz. The device will turn itself off after fi ve minutes of non-use. The Battery Icon will flash if voltage drops below 6V, and turn unit off after voltage drops below 5V. 2
To ensure safe operation and service of the tester, follow these instructions. Failure to observe these warnings can result in severe injury or death. The VDV Distance Meter is not designed to work on live electrical circuits. Do not under any cirumstances connect this device to live circuits. If a voltage is detected, the device will be disabled until the voltage is removed. SYMBOLS: Warning: Potential for personal injury. Caution: Potential for damage or destruction to equipment. Always wear approved eye protection. Do NOT use on energized circuits. Conformité Européenne. Conforms with European Economic Area directives. Do not place equipment and its accessories in the trash. Items must be properly disposed of in accordance with local regulations. The button turns the unit on and off with a short press. To change cable presets, press the button, and scroll with the and arrows. All preconfi gured Cable Modes and User Mode are scrolled through by pressing or buttons. Pressing the button selects a mode and the Ready icon will display on the screen to take a measurement automatically, no other action is required. To switch between imperial and metric units, hold the and arrow keys together for one second. Attach the cable to be tested to the product using the appropriate jack or connector. If necessary, change to the appropriate Cable Mode as detailed above. The Ready icon will appear and a measurement will be taken of the cable length automatically. This measurement is updated every five seconds. If the cable is shorted, the Short icon is displayed. If User Mode is selected the Ready icon will display along with readings for pf (capacitance per foot) and a length measurement. The and buttons will change the pf constant upwards or downwards. Holding the or buttons will allow the constant to be changed more quickly. With a cable sample of known length, a user can adjust the pf constant until the indicated length measurement matches the actual cable length. Then this setting can be used to measure other cables of the same type. This pf value is saved until changed again in User Mode or battery replacement resets the unit. The distance for this mode is updated every second. TIP: Using a longer calibration cable will reduce the error in subsequent tests.
ENGLISH Short User RG-6 Cat3 RG-11 Cat5e RG-59 Cat6 ft m Voltage! pf/ READY E G H Displays length of cable being measured. Blinking dashes mean the cable length or total capacitance has exceeded the maximum limits of the unit. When using a preset value, this will update every 5 seconds. When in User Mode, this will update every 1 second. Displays the selected preset cable value or User Mode. When lit, indicates that the unit is ready to take a length measurement. Indicates whether the cable being tested has a short. Indicates the unit of measurement (feet or meters) currently being used to display the measurement. To switch between metric and imperial units, hold the and arrow keys for one second. When lit, indicates that a voltage is present in the cable being tested. The unit is disabled when this icon is lit. Immediately disconnect the unit from the cable and disconnect the cable from the voltage source. NOTE: The absence of the Voltage! symbol DOES NOT necessarily mean that there are 0 volts on the line. In User Mode, the pf constant will be displayed. Use the or arrow keys to adjust this value. This will fl ash when the battery drops below 6V. Replace the battery at this point. Use these buttons to cycle through cable presets and User Mode. In User Mode, use these buttons to adjust the capacitance per unit length constant In a testing mode (preset or user) press this to exit and select a new mode. When a new mode is chosen, press again to re-enter testing mode. Short press to turn the unit on or off. 4
