Providing emergency telecommunications services to the humanitarian community ETC Situation Report #12 Mali Crisis Reporting period 06/07/2012 to 12/07/2012 Author: Caroline Teyssier Highlights: ETC continues supporting Radio Operators in Bamako with procedures and reference documentation. Common security and data communications services provision is being deployed in Mopti. Activities/Achievements: The Radio Operators in Bamako are following all Standard Operating Procedures for radio tracking provided by the International Radio Trainer (IRT). In Mopti, the / compound is now equipped with basic VHF/HF installation providing common security communications services to relief workers. 12 candidates have been pre-selected by the IRT and UNDP for the Radio Operator positions in Mopti. After completion of the selection process, 5 of them will be recruited and trained on the Radio room Standard Operating Procedures. The emergency.lu and WIDER solutions equipment is now in Mopti ready for installation. Challenges and Gaps: Should the ETC operation in Mali not receive additional funding, the ETC will have to reprioritize the response and potentially limited the deployment of common security and data communications services. Planned Activities: The ETC will start setting up the emergency.lu and WIDER solution in Mopti on Monday 16 July. The equipment will provide data connectivity services to the Humanitarian Community in Mopti. The ETC is planning to provide ICT services to humanitarian organizations in 3 more common operational areas: Kayes, Gao and Timbuktu subject to funding and security authorisation. More detailed information is available in the Concept of Operations posted on the ICT HEP Mali forum: http://ictemergency.wfp.org/web/ictepr/countries/mali.
