Overview The HP StorageWorks Medical Archive Solution (MAS) is an HP Healthcare solution for archiving medical images. It integrates leading industry standard HP servers and StorageWorks cost effective storage arrays with specialized HP software and support and an ILM rules engine. It provides high-performance access to diagnostic images archived from/at imaging centers, clinics and hospitals, as well as within multi-site integrated delivery networks. HP MAS is a solution designed specifically to handle fixed content, large size, large volume diagnostic imagery archival studies. What differentiates MAS is its ability to manage those images over the life of the images -- providing easy accessibility, the ability to find the images as needed by medical practitioners, and the capability to use automated, rules-based management that enables Information Lifecycle Management of the image (creating and expiring images across storage tiers and locations and movement to lower-cost media), as well-as compliance-based retention and shredding of the images. HP MAS also addresses the challenges of long-term archival, access and protection of rapidly growing volumes of reference medical images that often compromise existing production, backup and WAN environments in a hospital. HP MAS components can be configured together using tested blueprints and tailored to a customer's deployment requirements for a Single Site, Single Site plus Disaster recovery, Multi-site, or Multi-site hub and spoke topologies. The HP Medical Archive system is composed of multiple nodes, which form a unified archive based on a grid architecture. Each node consists of software services operating on a server that manages a limited capacity storage resource. The nodes are Gateway Node, Control Node, Admin Node, and various types/capacities of Storage Nodes. In addition, combined Control/Storage Nodes can be used at smaller sites. Within a given facility, all nodes are interconnected using standard TCP/IP networking, and communicate with local imaging modalities, PACS, and workstations. Wide Area Network (WAN) links extend the grid, enabling off-site replication of content for disaster recovery. The HP Medical Archive deployment relies on open standards for interoperability with external hospital systems. Exchange of clinical data with external clinical systems, including PACS, viewing workstations, and modalities, takes place over standardized network file system protocols (NFS/CIFS) or (optionally) via established imaging protocols, including DICOM. HP Medical Archive Solution Nodes The HP Medical Archive solution models described in this document are constructed according to the architecture described above, with a Gateway Node, two Control Nodes and two or more Storage nodes and an Admin Node. The various component nodes are described below. MAS Storage Node Provides secure data storage and transmission Replicates data across Grid Consists of a server with SAS hard drives for Linux OS, Storage Node SW, and MSA20 (SATA) or MSA30 (SCSI) disk array(s) for object storage. Capacity: A single storage node supports from 2.5 TB of effective capacity up to 7.2 TB DA - 12179 Worldwide Version 7 May 14, 2007 Page 2
Overview Multiple storage nodes can be added to the grid depending on capacity requirements, the need for redundancy, and performance/configurations guidelines for best practice. MAS Control Node Provides object management (an object is a single medical study, comprised of many images) Indexes and manages object metadata Replicates and synchronizes object metadata Manages storage policies "Brains" behind object replication Manages Internal Grid communications Provides policing and authentication Consists of server with SAS drives for Linux OS, Control Node SW and SQL Server DB operation Best Practice: Minimum deployment is 2 control nodes to provide DB redundancy. Additional Control Nodes can be added for GRID resiliency in a distributed environment to control local access and storage with limited or unreliable WAN, or to extend the number of objects supported on the grid for larger systems. MAS Gateway Node Acts as interface to Grid for client systems Presents Grid to client systems as a near-limitless network mounted drive Can be utilized as fast file-cache for Remote Sites (OPTIONAL) It is the node that provides the DICOM interface to PACS, modalities and other medical imaging devices Consists of a server with SAS hard drives for Linux OS and Gateway Node SW. CIFS and NFS mounts provided by Linux OS services, managed by HP MAS software. Best Practice: Minimum deployment is 2 Gateway nodes to provide interface redundancy to the PACS application. Additional Gateway nodes can be added for resiliency. In a distributed environment Gateway nodes can provide the interface to the local PACS (or archiving application) and cache the inbound data and then communicate to the storage node for archival. The archiving application only has to deposit the file in the CIFS/NFS interface with immediate response from the GRID MAS Admin Node Provides centralized management and administrative interface Provides user-access security Collects real-time and historical data for alerts, reporting, troubleshooting, and analysis Consists of a server with SAS hard drives for Linux OS and Admin Node SW Best Practice: Only one Admin Node is needed for the GRID. MAS Encryption Option SW Increases security by encrypting stored data Must be purchased at time of initial installation MAS DICOM option SW Adds DICOM interface connectivity pre-pacs environments where modalities and DICOM workstations connect to archive Multi-PACS environments Can be purchased initially or added at a later date Provides the following DICOM functionality for medical imaging exams and associated objects Storage Class Provider (SCP) - Storage of imaging exams by external devices Storage Class User (SCU) - Retrieval of imaging exams Query Provider (QRP) - Allow external devices to query for specific exams Complete details of the DICOM specification are available in the HP MAS DICOM Conformance statement MAS WAN Connectivity Kit DA - 12179 Worldwide Version 7 May 14, 2007 Page 3
Overview Required to interconnect 2 MAS systems in a disaster recovery or enterprise configuration Functions and Configuration details Required for linking the primary and DR sites together. The WCK is installed in the Base Cabinet at both sites. The WCK requires installation of the Cabinet Connectivity Kit Consists of 2 routers that are installed in the base cabinet and are connected to the routers in the Cabinet Connectivity kit. MAS Cabinet Connectivity Kit Required to interconnect 2 Cabinets (whether remote or local) Only one Cabinet Connectivity Kit needed per site Functions and Configuration details A Cabinet Connectivity Kit is installed in the Base Cabinet at each site. Consists of 2 switch routers for redundancy MAS Infrastructure Cabinet Base cabinet or Expansion cabinet required for housing the Building Blocks Infrastructure Cabinets can host a variable number of Storage and Infrastructure Nodes depending on the specific configuration. The HP MAS Blueprints identify many of the configuration options Functions and Configuration details Includes the physical rack, all power, communication and management infrastructure that may be used in an installation. The cabinet is 42 U and has predefined locations for each building block. Refer to the Blueprint document for specific rack elevations. MAS Storage / Control Node Provides the functionality both of Storage Nodes and Control Nodes Consists of a server with SAS hard drives for Linux OS, Storage Node SW, and MSA20 (SATA) or MSA30 (SCSI) disk array(s) for object storage. Capacity: A single Storage / Control node supports from 2.5 TB of effective capacity (SATA) or 3.6 TB (SCSI) Multiple storage nodes can be added to the grid depending on capacity requirements and the need for redundancy MAS Prefetch Option SW Preload additional images in a study when a first image is retrieved to speed up viewing exams for some PACS applications. This is advantageous for PACS which do not containerize all images in a study prior to archiving them. MAS WORM Option SW Write Once Read Many (WORM) protection for all storage nodes Mimics behavior of CD-R or DVD-R media for regulatory compliance as applicable DA - 12179 Worldwide Version 7 May 14, 2007 Page 4
