She jumped up, turned down the volume on the TV, and listened. "We need order," Adam told Byron. "We need order," Byron told Jordan. "We need order," Jordan told Vanessa. "We need order," Vanessa told Nicky. "We need order," Nicky told Margo. "We need order," Margo told Claire. "Right." Well, I nominate Kristy for president. "Right." We need order, Kristy,

Methods in Scholarship
I glanced out my window. (They are all framed in pink.) I checked my watch. I ate breakfast with my father. I ran upstairs to my room, pulled the rubber bands off the ends of my braids, shook my hair out, and brushed it carefully. My room/ My gaze We clattered down the midget staircase. Suddenly, I drifted from my walls to the window. They are all framed in pink! In the den, we stood before a bookcase with a row of heavy old yearbooks in it. I wondered if the people who had composed them would know what they meant twenty-five years later. We can't all be scholars.

Yellowing Friends
Peace was still reigning there-it had almost reached the top of the stairs. But I want you to remember this incident! Our clients wouldn't have to go through what Mom had just gone through. Then they can make one call and write it up in the notebook and the others should read about it and accept jobs and glasses and monogrammed handkerchiefs. Jenny smiled at me. She wore no jewelry and no makeup, and her face was wrinkled and creased. I thought she was beautiful. Although I had vowed to find a way to get our competent hands back together, things kept coming up to take my mind off of it. So I took the job. Not one face was familiar. They were yellowed with age. (What's an ascot?) Humiliated, I let myself inside, I tried not to look as angry as I felt, and I could tell they were probably going to play it themselves for a long time. The bell rang my thoughts began to wander I watched my last friend I could make my own friends.

Bees
Bees flew into the classroom and droned around our heads, opened every single window and door, and turned off all the lights.

Trevor Sandbourne
My stomach dropped. The Friday lunch at Stoneybrook Middle School is joes red Jell-O with canned fruit in it a dinky cup of cole slaw milk and a Fudgesicle. always the same: sloppy The next morning was Saturday, but I woke up early anyway. I didn't know what to do. I was lost in a whirl of fur and claws, and playful woofs. I almost didn't care. people were scrambling around getting out plates /forks /spoons, and /glasses, and pulling food out of the refrigerator. They're nine. Ten Stacey used the shortcut: she's a bit on the eccentric side and Karen is convinced she's a witch. How often do you get calls trying to design a plan of attack on Trevor Sandbourne? We gathered in Claudia's room. New clients are always interesting. We'd learned a lot over the past couple of weeks, but by then, even Mary Anne wasn't so sure.in hushed voices we began sitting up in silent houses-dolls can tan, you know.

Accessories
I'd give anything to be Stacey. Sometimes she wears it in lots of skinny braids, sometimes she twists it on top of her head. This is important because then the rest of us learn. [Twice I caught Kristy's eye.] [I turned around.] [Claudia disappeared.] I looked at her. She was sitting in an armchair in the living room, her legs sticking out in front of her, her head leaning back listlessly. She appeared to be listening to us. Sometimes she has very little patience with me. Her tights were white. Her shoes were white. Her hair ribbon was white. On the other hand, there are never any surprises. I disappeared into mine.
