The Word 2010 Window Quick Access Toolbar Title Bar Ribbon Scroll Bar Document Area Status Bar Word 2010 New Features http://www.gcflearnfree.org/word2010 The Ribbon Territory File Tab A central location for file sharing, printing or sending Quick Access Toolbar A place to display commands you use the most. Contextual Tabs tabs that aren t on the ribbon all the time. They appear only for a specific task. It shows up only when you need it. For instance: if you re editing tables, will see a Table Tab. Otherwise it s hidden. Galleries sets of preformatted themes, styles, templates Live Preview view formatting changes by hovering over your choices before you apply them. Minimize and Maximize the Ribbon Click on the small arrow in the upper right hand corner of the window, or Right-click anywhere in the main menu. Select Minimize the Ribbon in the menu that appears. This will toggle the Ribbon on and off. Click on a tab to minimize or maximize. Keyboard shortcut: CRTL + F1 to minimize or expand.
Customize the Ribbon Right-click on the ribbon, and from the menu, select Customize Ribbon. If you rarely use a tab or a group, you can turn it off. You can create a custom tab. You can move a group from one tab to another. The Ribbon is dynamic When it s expanded you can see all the options, when it s contracted you see only groups. Groups Word functions are organized into groups. Some groups have a dialog box launcher, a small arrow in the lower right corner of the group. Click on the arrow and you ll see the dialog box belonging to that group. View your document You can open more than one Word document, and you can view more than one document at a time, but only one document can be active at a time. To see your view options, click on the View tab. You can choose additional viewing sizes by clicking on Zoom in the View tab. Display the ruler Click the View Ruler icon over the scrollbar The View Ruler icon works as a toggle to turn the ruler on and off.
Display Gridlines The Gridlines checkbox acts the same as the Ruler checkbox. Check it if you want to see gridlines. Uncheck it if you want them removed. Status Bar Located at the bottom of the screen. It shows the current page, word count, spelling and grammar check, zoom levels and more. Contents of the Main Tabs File Tab: New Open, Save, Save As, Print and Close. Home Tab: Document formatting, including fonts, paragraph formatting, styles. Insert Tab: New pages, pictures, tables, headers and footers Page Layout Tab: Themes, margins, orientation, columns, background. References Tab: Tables of content, footnotes, bibliographies, indexes. Mailings Tab: Envelopes, labels, mail merge. Review Tab: Proofing (including spell check), tracking changes. View Tab: Change view (bigger or smaller), show or hide paragraph marks. Working in a Word Document Type text at the insertion point. It s easy to move the insertion point by clicking in the text or pressing keys or key combinations. Move around in an open document without using a mouse: Use the arrow keys Left one character Left arrow Right one character Right arrow Down one line Down arrow Up one line Up arrow Grab the scroll bar on the side of the window to move up and down Grab the scroll bar on the bottom of the window to move from side to side. To open a new document Click the File Tab Click the New icon Name your document and select its location Save it. (Click the escape key to close the Office menu) Enter text at the blinking vertical line called an I-bar. When you click your mouse and begin to type, the text will appear on the computer screen. As you reach the end of the line of type, Word automatically wraps the text onto the next line.
To Open an Existing Document Click on the File tab and select Open. Compatibility If you have Word files created in previous versions of Word, you can open them and work in them, but not all the features of Word 2010 may be available. In your document s title bar, you ll see it s in compatibility mode. You can work in the older Word version or you can convert the document to a Word 2010 document by clicking the File Tab and clicking Convert. Hint: Word 2004 and earlier files end with.doc. Word 2007 and Word 2010 files end with.docx. The Word Help screen shows you how to use the Help viewer, lists an index you can scroll thorough, and even lets you search for a specific topic. Go to http://office.microsoft.com/engb/word-help/ Click the Word 2010 heading and select a topic. Hovering Hovering over any icon or button shows you its name and function.

Browse to the Word student files. 3. You ll see files with two kinds of file name extensions:.doc and.docx and.jpg. The.doc and.docx files are Word files. The.jpg files are picture files. 4. Open the Signal Hill 1 Word file by double-clicking it. Move the Cursor in the Document When you move the cursor with your mouse, you ll see an I-bar. When you click it on your document, it changes to a flashing line. This insertion point is where you would start typing. (Notice that when you move your cursor into the margins, the flashing line becomes an arrow.) Move Around in Word 1. Practice using the arrow keys to move throughout your document. 2. Click on the up or down arrow on the scroll bar to see different parts of the document. 3. Move the scroll bar up and down by grabbing the blue oval on the scroll bar. When you press on it, it will display the page number you are currently viewing. Redo Paragraphs Make any two adjoining paragraphs into one larger one by using the delete key. After you ve made one big paragraph, separate it into two again. Replace and Insert Text In the first three paragraphs of the Signal Hill 1 document, you ll see some words in bold face. Select and delete them. At any point on the first page, insert a few words into some sentences. Zoom In and Out Click on the View tab and click on the Zoom icon. Experiment with the different magnifications. Help Open the Help menu and look around. It s a good idea to become familiar with how it works. Save Save your document into your student folder.
