Getting Started Movie Maker System Requirements Movie Maker has the following system requirements: Operating system: o Movie Maker 2011: Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (32-bit or 64-bit versions) or Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit versions) o Movie Maker 2012: Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit versions), Windows 8 (32-bit or 64-bit versions), or Windows 8.1 (32-bit or 64-bit versions) To burn a movie directly to a DVD using Movie Maker, Windows DVD Maker must be installed on your PC. Windows DVD Maker is included in the following operating systems: Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 7 Ultimate To record video from a webcam, Movie Maker must be running on Windows 7. The types of video and audio files you can use in Movie Maker depend on which version and edition of Windows that your PC is running. For more information, see the next section of this handout, What kind of files can I use in Movie Maker? Memory: 1 GB of RAM (2 GB of RAM or higher is recommended when editing HD (highdefinition) video) Processor: 2.4 GHz (single processor) or higher (a dual-core processor or higher is recommended when editing HD video) Internet browser: Internet Explorer 7 (or later), Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 (or later), or Safari 3.1 (or later) Internet connection: Internet functionality requires dial-up or broadband Internet access (provided separately). Local or long-distance charges might apply. Graphics or video card: Video card or video driver that supports Microsoft DirectX 9.0c (or later) and Pixel Shader 2.0 (or later). For DirectX 9 hardware on Windows 7, go to Windows Update at: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/install-windows-updates To open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool in Windows 7, click the Start button, type dxdiag in the search box, and then, in the list of results, click dxdiag. Click the Display tab, and then look at the value for DDI Version. To open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, tap or click Start in the lower-left corner of the screen, start typing dxdiag, and then click dxdiag in the list of results. Click the System tab, and then look at the value for DirectX Version. 3

Additional required programs: Photo Gallery and Windows Media Player, or equivalent 3 rd party programs. Notes: To install or uninstall Movie Maker, you must use an administrator account on the PC. In some cases, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool might not report the Device Driver Interface (DDI) version correctly. You can add the following types of video, photo, and audio files to Movie Maker. Notes: Video files that use digital rights management (DRM) can't be used in Movie Maker. Support for using MPEG-2 and Microsoft Recorded TV Show video files in your movie is available only if your computer is running one of the following editions of Windows: Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, or Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows Vista Home Premium, or Windows Vista Ultimate. AVCHD video files that contain Dolby Digital audio can be used in Movie Maker if your computer is running one of the following editions of Windows: Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, or Windows 7 Ultimate. MPEG-4 video files that contain AAC audio can be used if you're using Movie Maker on a computer running Windows 7. 3GPP and 3GPP2 video files that are often recorded on a mobile phone can be used in Movie Maker if the file contains MPEG-4 video, AAC audio, and if Movie Maker is installed on a computer running Windows 7. 3GPP video files might contain AMR audio and 3GPP2 files might contain AMR or QCELP audio instead. In these cases, the video will often play, but the audio won't. Files that contain H.263 video might not play in Movie Maker without installing additional codecs. Some MPEG-4 video files can be used when you're using Movie Maker on a computer running Windows Vista if the necessary audio and video codecs are installed. For more information about video and audio codecs, as well as determining which codecs are installed on your computer and used in a particular video file, see Codecs: frequently asked questions on the Windows website. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/codecs-frequently-asked-questions Add Videos and Photos in Movie Maker The first step to making a movie in Movie Maker is to add videos and photos. There are a few different ways to add them. Here's how: Add Videos and Photos into Movie Maker 1. In Movie Maker, on the Home tab, in the Add group, click Add videos and photos. 2. In the Add Videos and Photos dialog box, open the folder that contains the photos or videos that you want to add, select the video files and photos, and then click Open. To select multiple photos and videos, press and hold the Ctrl key, and then click each photo and video you want. 5

Add Photos and Videos to Movie Maker through Photo Gallery Notes: 1. In Photo Gallery, select the videos and photos that you want to use in your movie. To select multiple photos and videos, select the check box in the upper-left corner for each photo and video you want. 2. On the Create tab, in the Share group, click Movie. Movie Maker opens automatically, and the selected photos and videos are added to the storyboard. Quickly add photos and videos files to Movie Maker drag them from the folder on your PC to Movie Maker. You can use Photo Gallery to get photos and videos off your camera and onto your PC so you can use them in Movie Maker. If you have video on a videotape in a digital video (DV) camera, you'll need to import the video from the tape onto your PC before you can use that footage in Movie Maker. When you import photos and videos, they are copied from the camera or device to your PC. After that, you can use them in your movies in Movie Maker, and they'll appear in Photo Gallery too. Here are some devices that you might import photos or videos from: A digital camera or phone that's connected to your PC with a USB cable A Secure Digital (SD), mini SD or CompactFlash storage card that's in a card reader A data CD or DVD A video camera that records to an internal hard drive or flash storage card A videotape that's in a digital video (DV) camera or High-Definition Video (HDV) camera If you have a webcam built into your PC or connected to your PC with a USB cable, you can record live video from a webcam and add it to Movie Maker. 6

To Import Photos and Videos from a Digital Camera, Hard Drive or Flash Storage-based Video Camera, CompactFlash or other Storage Card That's in a Card Reader, or Data CD or DVD 1. Open Movie Maker. 2. Do one of the following, depending on the type of device that you're importing from: o Connect your digital camera or phone to your PC with a USB cable, and then turn it on. o Connect a video camera that records to an internal hard drive or flash storage card to your PC using a USB connection. o Insert the storage card into a card reader (if you have one). o Insert the data CD or DVD into the disc drive on your PC. 3. Click the Movie Maker button, and then click Import from device. 4. If the Photos and videos will be imported into Photo Gallery message appears, click OK. 5. In the Import Photos and Videos window, click the device that you want to import photos and videos from, and then click Import. 6. (Optional) Click More options, make the changes you want, and then click OK. Options can include where to save the files and what format to use for the folder and file names. If your camera can detect whether you take photos vertically or horizontally, your PC can automatically rotate JPEG photos to the correct orientation when they're imported. To turn off automatic rotation, clear the Rotate photos during import check box. 7. On the New photos and videos were found page, do one of the following: o To review, organize, and select photos and videos to import, click Review, organize, and group items to import, click Next, and then go to step 8. o To import all the photos and videos at once, click Import all new items now, type a name for all the photos and videos, and then click Import. All the photos and videos will be imported. Go to step 9 to continue. 8. On the Select the groups you want to import page, do one or more of the following, and then click Import: o The photos and videos are grouped by the date they were taken. To change the time interval for the photo and videos groupings, move the Adjust groups slider. o To import a group of photos and video, select the check box next to the group. Clear the check boxes for groups of photos and videos that you don't want to import. o To view all of the photos and videos in a group, next to the group, click View all items. o For each group of photos and videos that you want to import, click Enter a name, and then type a name for the group. o To assign tags to a group, click Add tags, and then type a new tag name for that group of photos and videos or click an existing tag. If you want to enter more than one tag, type a semicolon between each tag to separate them. 9. In Photo Gallery, select the check box in the upper-left corner for each photo or video you want to use in your movie. 10. On the Create tab, in the Share group, click Movie. The selected photos and videos are added to the storyboard in Movie Maker. 7

Notes: Before you remove your photos or videos from your phone, camera or storage card, you might want to copy them to recordable DVDs or CDs, an external hard disk, or to a web-based storage service so that you have a backup copy. Video and music files that use digital rights management (DRM) can't be used in Movie Maker. To Import Video from a Videotape in a DV Camera 1. Open Movie Maker. 2. Connect your digital video (DV) camera to your PC by using an IEEE 1394 cable, and then switch your digital video camera to Playback/VCR mode. 3. Click the Movie Maker button, and then click Import from device. 4. If the Photos and videos will be imported into Photo Gallery message appears, click OK. 5. In the Import Photos and Videos window, select the DV camera, and then click Import. 6. (Optional) On the Import video page, click More options, do one or more of the following, and then click OK: o Select the options that you want to use, such as where to save the files and what format to use for the folder and file names. o If your videotape contains several different scenes, each scene can be imported as a different file. To do this, select the Import videos as multiple files (unavailable for HD video) check box. If less than 30 seconds elapsed between the end of one scene and the beginning of the next, they're imported as a single file. 7. On the Import video page, type a name for the video you want to import, do one of the following, and then click Next: o Click Import the entire video to import all the video on the videotape to your PC. Go to step 10 after the video is imported. The videotape will be imported to your PC and rewound automatically. o Click Choose parts of the video to import, and then continue with step 8. o Click Burn the entire video to DVD and enter a DVD menu title. The video will be imported to your PC and burned to a DVD. After it's burned to DVD, on the Your DVD is ready page, click Close. To use this option and burn the video directly to a DVD, Windows DVD Maker must be installed on your PC. You also need to have a DVD burner installed with a blank recordable DVD in it. In Windows Vista, Windows DVD Maker is included in Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate editions. In Windows 7, Windows DVD Maker is included in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, and Windows 7 Ultimate editions. 8

Note: Windows DVD Maker isn't included in Windows 8.1. If you're running Windows 8.1 and you want to burn a DVD that you can play on a DVD player, you'll need to use a thirdparty DVD burning program. 8. In the Import video window, use your camera to find the part of video that you want to import first, and then click Import. If you want to stop importing video after a certain amount of time, select the Stop importing after (min) check box, and then select a time period. 9. Click Stop to stop importing video, and then do one of the following: o Use the camera to go to another part of the video that you want to import, and then import that part of video too. Click Finish when you're done importing all the video you want from the videotape. o If you've imported all the video that you want, click Finish. The video is imported and saved as a DV-AVI file. 10. In Photo Gallery, select the check box in the upper-left corner for the video you want to use in your movie. 11. On the Create tab, in the Share group, click Movie. The selected photos and videos are added to the storyboard in Movie Maker. If you're importing video from a High-Definition Video (HDV) camera, you can only import the entire videotape. Edit Movies in Movie Maker Make your movie look the way you want it to with the editing tools in Movie Maker. Trim Your Video You can trim the beginning and end of a video so your movie shows only the part of the video you want. For example, if you have a video with a few black frames at the beginning, you could trim the beginning of the video so the black frames don't appear in your final saved movie. When you trim a video file in Movie Maker, the original video file isn't affected. All the video footage remains in the original video file. To Trim a Video in Movie Maker 1. On the Home tab, in the Add group, click Add videos and photos. 2. In the Add Videos and Photos dialog box, open the folder that contains the photos or videos that you want to add, select the video files and photos, and then click Open. 9

3. Click the video that you want to trim. To select multiple photos and videos, press and hold the Ctrl key, and then click each photo and video you want. 4. Under Video Tools, on the Edit tab, in the Editing group, do one or more of the following: o To set a new start point for the video, drag the slider underneath the preview monitor to the point that you want the video to start, and then click Set start point. o To set a new end point for the video, drag the slider underneath the preview monitor to the point that you want the video to stop playing, and then click Set end point. To Clear Any New Start and End Points in Movie Maker so the Whole Video Plays 1. Click a trimmed video in your project. 2. Under Video Tools, on the Edit tab, in the Editing group, click Trim tool. 3. Do one or more of the following: o To make the trimmed video play from the beginning again, click the start trim handle Notes: o underneath the preview monitor, and drag it to the beginning of the video. To make the trimmed video play to the end again, click the end trim handle underneath the preview monitor, and drag it to the end of the video. 4. On the Trim tab, in the Trim group, click Save trim to save the changes you made and to close the trim tool. To quickly trim a video in Movie Maker, play the video you want to trim, and then press the I key to make the current point the start point, or press the O key to make it the end point. If you trim part of a video that has a caption, the caption is trimmed too. Split a Video You can split a video into two smaller items and then continue editing. For example, after splitting a video, you can move one video in front of the other to change the order in which the videos play in your movie. To Split a Video into Two Items 1. Click your movie, and then drag the playback indicator to the point where you want to split the video. 2. Under Video Tools, on the Edit tab, in the Editing group, click Split. 10

Speed Up or Slow Down a Video You can change the speed of your video in Movie Maker to make the it play faster or slower. Click the video, and under Video Tools, on the Edit tab, in the Adjust group, click the Speed list, and then click a speed (depending on how much you want to speed the video up or slow it down). Choose a Theme A Movie Maker AutoMovie theme will automatically add titles, credits, transitions, and effects to your movie. Preview the AutoMovie themes by pointing to each one with your cursor. Once you've added the photos, videos, and music you want to use to MovieMaker, on the Home tab, in the AutoMovie themes group, click the theme that works best for your movie. You can continue editing, or just save your movie. Note: AutoMovie creates credits for your movie based on your tags. If your tags aren't correct, you can correct them by typing in new ones. Add and Edit Audio in Movie Maker Make your finished movie feel polished and professional by adding a soundtrack and using the editing tools in Movie Maker to adjust the volume, fade music in or out, and more. To Add Music 1. On the Home tab, in the Add group, click Add music. 2. Click the music file you want to use, and then click Open. To Fade Music In or Out 1. Click the music you want to fade in and/or out. 2. Under Music Tools, in the Options tab, in the Audio group, do one or both of the following: o To make the music fade in, click the Fade in list, and then click the speed for the music to fade in. o To make the music fade out, click the Fade out list, and then click the speed for the music to fade out. To Change the Start or End Point of the Music 1. Click the music. 2. Drag the playback indicator on the storyboard to the point in the music where you want it to start or stop playing in your movie. Then do one of the following: 11

o o To set a new start point for the music to start playing at the current point, under Music Tools, on the Options tab, in the Editing group, click Set start point. To set a new end point so the music stops playing at the current point, under Music Tools, on the Options tab, in the Editing group, click Set end point. To Change the Audio Volume of a Music Item 1. Click the music. 2. Under Music Tools, on the Options tab, in the Audio group, click Music volume, and then move the slider left to lower the volume or right to increase it. To Change the Volume of the Audio in a Video 1. Click the video. 2. Under Video Tools, on the Edit tab, in the Audio group, click Video volume, and then move the slider left to lower the volume or right to increase it. How do I Use Custom Settings to Save Videos? Movie Maker already has many built-in settings that you can choose from when you're ready to save your movie. But you can also save your movie with a custom setting you create. This lets you save your movie at a quality level and size that meets your specific needs. To Create a Custom Setting in Movie Maker 1. Open Movie Maker by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Movie Maker, and then, in the list of results, click Movie Maker. 2. On the Home tab, in the Add group, click Add videos and photos. 3. In the Add Videos and Photos dialog box, open the folder that contains the photos or videos that you want to add, select the video files and photos, and then click Open. To select multiple photos and videos, press and hold the Ctrl key, and then click each photo and video you want. 4. After you're done editing, on the Home tab, in the Sharing group, click Save movie, and then click Create custom setting. 5. To create a new custom setting that's based on an existing setting, click the Setting list, and then choose an existing setting. 6. In the Name box, type a name for the new custom setting. This is the custom setting name that will appear in Movie Maker. 7. In the Video settings area, do the following: o In the Width and Height boxes, enter the video display size you want (in pixels). o In the Bit rate box, enter the bit rate (in kbps) for your setting. o In the Frame rate box, enter the number of frames per second for your setting. 8. In the Audio format list, click the audio settings you want to use. 12

9. Click Save. 10. In the Save Custom Setting dialog box, type a file name for the new setting in the File name box, and then click Save. 11. In the Create Custom Setting dialog box, click Close. To Save a Movie Using a Custom Setting 1. Open Movie Maker by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Movie Maker, and then, in the list of results, click Movie Maker. 2. On the Home tab, in the Add group, click Add videos and photos. 3. In the Add Videos and Photos dialog box, open the folder that contains the photos or videos that you want to add, select the video files and photos, and then click Open. To select multiple photos and videos, press and hold the Ctrl key, and then click each photo and video you want. 4. After you're done editing, on the Home tab, in the Sharing group, click Save movie, and then click a custom setting in the Custom settings category. 5. In the File name box, type a file name for your movie, and then click Save. 6. Click Play to play your saved movie in your default media player. Publish a Movie Maker Movie on the Web After you're done editing your project in Movie Maker, you can share your movie with family and friends by publishing it on the web. You can also install additional publishing plug-ins that let you publish your movie on many other popular websites while you're in Movie Maker. To Publish a Movie on the Web from Movie Maker 1. On the Home tab, in the Sharing group, click the website where you want to publish your movie. 2. Enter your user name and password, and then follow the steps to publish your movie. To Add a Plug-in in Movie Maker 1. On the Home tab, in the Sharing group, click the More button, and then click Add a Plug-in. 2. Follow the instructions to download and install the publishing plug-in. To Publish a Movie on a Website by Using a Plug-in 1. On the Home tab, in the Sharing group, click the plug-in for the website where you want to publish your movie. 2. Follow the instructions to publish your movie on that website. 13

Share a Movie Maker Movie in Email After your Movie Maker movie is complete, you can share it in a variety of ways, including as a lowerresolution file in an email message. To Share a Movie in Email Note: 1. Open Movie Maker. 2. Open the movie that you want to share in Movie Maker, and on the Home tab, in the Share group, click the dropdown arrow next to Save Movie, and then click For Email. 3. Name the movie that you re saving to share in email with a unique name, and then click Save. 4. Open your email program, compose a new message, and then attach the movie you just saved before sending it. Some email providers restrict the size of files you can send in email. This limit varies by email provider. How do I Fix Common Movie Maker Errors? Sometimes errors occur in Movie Maker. Here are some common errors and steps to help fix them. How to Fix Error c9450032 No Audio Device Found 1. Click the Start button. In the search box, type Control Panel, and in the list of results, click Control Panel, and then click Sound. 2. On the Recording tab, click the recording device that you d like to use, and then click Properties. Go to Device usage, select Use this device (enable), and click OK. 3. Open Movie Maker by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Movie Maker, and then, in the list of results, click Movie Maker. 4. Click the Movie Maker button, and then click Options. In the left pane, select Webcam, and then check to see that Available audio device is set to the device you enabled in the Control Panel in Step 2. How to Fix Error c9450027 Can t Record Audio or Video From the Selected Device 1. Make sure that the webcam you're trying to use is properly connected to your PC and not currently in use by another program. 2. Try reconnecting the webcam and restarting your PC. 14

How to Fix Error c9450031 or c9450028 No Webcam Found 1. Make sure a compatible device is properly connected to your PC. If it is, check that the device is connected in Movie Maker. 2. Open Movie Maker by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Movie Maker, and then, in the list of results, click Movie Maker. 3. Click the Movie Maker button and then click Options. In the left pane, select Webcam, and then check to see that your webcam is selected in the Available webcams list. How to Fix Error 80df0009 Movie Maker Won t Start If you get this error message make sure you ve installed the latest version or Movie Maker and that your PC meets the minimum system requirements listed at the beginning of this document. If you're using the latest version of Movie Maker and your PC meets the system requirements but you still get this error, check that your PC has the latest video driver installed. 1. To check the video card manufacturer and driver installed on your PC, click the Start button. In the search box, type dxdiag, and then, in the list of results, click dxdiag to open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If you get a message asking to check if your drivers are digitally signed, click Yes. 2. In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, on the Display tab, in the Device group is the name of the your video card and manufacturer. In the Drivers group is the driver version you have installed. Compare these with the info provided by the manufacturer s website. If a newer driver is available, follow the manufacturer s instructions to install it. How to Fix Error 80004003 - Movie Maker Project Files Won t Open Microsoft is currently working to fix error 80004003 in Movie Maker. In the meantime, the Microsoft support team can fix Movie Maker project files so that you can open them. To get help from Microsoft s team, you will need to upload your file to OneDrive, set the file s permission to Public, and then send a request to Microsoft s team for support. 15
