vi Sun Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 Product Notes December 2000

Sun Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 Product Notes The following product notes contain information about changes to the Sun Ultra 5 and Sun Ultra 10 system hardware, software, and product documentation. These product notes are a summary of the changes that became known after the product documentation set was published. This product note contains information on the following topics: Preinstalled Software Restoring the Preinstalled Software New Power Supply New 20 Gigabyte Hard Disk Drive New 48x CD-ROM Drive Preinstalled Software Your Sun Ultra 5 or Ultra 10 system has two versions of the Solaris operating environment software already installed on its new hard disk: Solaris 7 11/99 (instead of Solaris 7 3/99) and Solaris 8 software. In the Sun Ultra 5 With Preinstalled Software Getting Started Guide, 806-0162, or the Sun Ultra 10 With Preinstalled Software Getting Started Guide, 806-0163, the information pertaining to the operating environment is also true of the current preinstalled software, including the information about initial configuration in the sections Using the System as a Desktop Workstation and Using the System as a Server. 1

Summary of Preinstalled Software Suites The Solaris 8 preinstalled software suite has the latest versions of the software. However, the Solaris 7 11/99 preinstalled software suite is also supplied for the convenience of those using the older software versions on existing systems. Table 1 summarizes the software suites. This table replaces Table 2 in the Sun Ultra 5 With Preinstalled Software Getting Started Guide, 806-0162, and in the Sun Ultra 10 With Preinstalled Software Getting Started Guide, 806-0163. Note the new version numbers. TABLE 1 Summary of Preinstalled Software Suites Solaris 7 11/99 Preinstalled Software Solaris 8 Preinstalled Software Solaris 7 11/99 operating environment Solaris 7 11/99 AnswerBook 2 documentation Java Development Kit 1.1.7 and Java 2 Software Development Kit 1.2.1 Solaris 8 operating environment Java Plug-In 1.1.1 Java Plug-In 1.2.1 Java 3D 1.1.1 Java 3D 1.1.2 Solaris 8 AnswerBook2 documentation Java 2 Software Development Kit 1.2.2 Java Media Framework 2.1 Java Media Framework 2.1 Netscape Communicator 4.5 Netscape Communicator 4.7 OpenGL 1.2 OpenGL 1.2.1 PC launcher 1.0.1 PC launcher 1.0.1 ShowMe TV 1.3 ShowMe TV 1.3 SunForum 3.1 SunForum 3.1 ODBC Driver Manager 2.11 medialib 1.2 StarOffice 5.2 StarOffice 5.2 Apache Server 1.3.9 Perl 5 Java Communications API 2.0 Note To start Netscape Communicator, click on the globe/clock icon on the CDE desktop task bar. Netscape Communicator has built-in help files for more information. 2 Sun Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 Product Notes December 2000

Restoring the Preinstalled Software You might want to make and keep a full backup of the operating system, which can be used to restore your system. Instructions for backing up your operating system are included in the preinstalled Solaris System Administration Guide AnswerBook2. The following table summarizes the default disk configurations and partitioning for both the Solaris 7 11/99 and the Solaris 8 preinstalled software, after the user has completed initial configuration. The table replaces Table 4 in the Sun Ultra 5 With Preinstalled Software Getting Started Guide, 806-0162, and in the Sun Ultra 10 With Preinstalled Software Getting Started Guide, 806-0163. TABLE 2 Default Preinstalled Disk Configurations Solaris 7 11/99 and Solaris 8 Preinstalled Disk Configurations Slice Name Size (MBytes) Mounted as 0 root 6144 / 1 swap 512 NA 3 space remainder /space New Power Supply The new power supply complies with the latest European Community regulatory requirements. The Declarations of Compliance printed in the document replace the declarations in the front matter of the Sun Ultra 5 Service Manual, 805-7763, and in the Sun Ultra 10 Service Manual, 805-7764. The new power supply automatically detects and adjusts for the AC line voltage. Therefore, the voltage select switch has been eliminated. 3

This information updates the following documentation: Section 6.1.2, Replacing the Power Supply in the Sun Ultra 5 Service Manual, 805-7763, and in the Sun Ultra 10 Service Manual, 805-7764. The section Cabling the System and Peripherals in the Sun Ultra 5 With Preinstalled Software Getting Started Guide, 806-0162, and in the Sun Ultra 10 With Preinstalled Software Getting Started Guide, 806-0163. Note If your system contains the new power supply, the label bearing the serial number is marked with the letter D. This label, also known as the E-Z label, is on the back bezel. The information on the E-Z label helps service support identify the original system configuration when users call for assistance, support, and parts. New 20 Gigabyte Hard Disk Drive The Sun Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 systems are equipped with a 20 Gigabyte hard drive. The hard drive operates at 7,200 RPM. The procedures in the Sun Ultra 5 and Sun Ultra 10 Getting Started Guides and Service Manuals describe how to remove and replace the hard drive. Note Prior to installing a hard disk drive, verify that the back panel mode-select jumper is set to CS. New 48x CD-ROM Drive The new CD-ROM drive runs at 48x speed. The procedures in the Sun Ultra 5 and Sun Ultra 10 Getting Started Guides and Service Manuals describe how to remove and replace the CD-ROM drive. Note Prior to installing a CD-ROM drive, verify that the back panel mode-select jumper is set to MA. 4 Sun Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 Product Notes December 2000
