SOLUTION GUIDE Pushing the Frontiers of Wireless Communications Innovative Wireless Solutions broadcom.com 1

Innovative Solutions for Heterogeneous Wireless Ecosystem 2 60GHz Wireless connectivity has become an integral part of modern day life as mobile devices have made it easier for people to remain connected, whether at home, in a car, at work or at a public venue. Modern mobile devices connect to an extensive ecosystem of wireless networks and connected devices, enabling everyday wireless applications like voice/ text communications, locationbased applications, wireless audio, video streaming and internet connectivity. Wireless data consumption is on the rise, and the number of devices consuming wireless data is ever increasing. By 2020, an estimate of 30 exabytes (10 18 bytes) of data will cross the mobile network per month of which a majority of the data traffic will be generated by mobile video (See Figure 1). LTE & Wi-Fi form the basis for today s heterogeneous wireless ecosystem that supports this voracious appetite for data. The number of cellular bands used concurrently under the LTE Advanced continues to increase as multiple carrier frequency bands are being aggregated to provide higher data throughput. While cellular data traffic is important, more than two thirds of mobile wireless data still goes through Wi-Fi. For next generation mobile platforms and wireless infrastructure devices, the 802.11ax Wi-Fi provides faster data speed and facilitates high efficiency data transfer. Also, the wide spectral bandwidth in the 60GHz band enables a whole new generation of multi-gbps wireless connectivity solutions. Bluetooth and GNSS are other wireless technologies that are prevalent in mobile devices.

Bluetooth is the technology of choice for wireless audio and human interface devices. The latest generation of Bluetooth 5.0 improves data speed by 2 times and transmission range by 4 times over its previous generation. GNSS is the core enabler for locationbased applications. Recent GNSS developments with dualfrequency receivers target submeter accuracy to further enhance location-based services and create a more sophisticated end user experience. but also to ensure that a multitude of technologies coexist and operate well together in the highly miniaturized and sophisticated smart phone. Broadcom has been at the forefront of wireless revolution driving new standards and advancing wireless communications. Broadcom leads the industry in technical innovation across many wireless disciplines and offers a unique product portfolio addressing today s most challenging problems facing the wireless industry. The increase in the number of LTE bands and GNSS signals supported, the continual upgrade to higher throughput Wi-Fi and the ubiquity of Bluetooth mobile accessories pose many difficult technical challenges for mobile system designers. The miniaturized RF system that makes up the smart phone now has to deal with complex RF coexistence, signal integrity and power efficiency issues among other challenges. As a result, the chips that enable modern wireless applications need ingenious engineering design not only to function per specification, 35 30 25 Exabytes 20 per Month 15 10 5 0 Mobile File Sharing (1%, 2%) Mobile Audio (8%, 6%) Mobile Web/Data/VoIP (36%, 17%) Mobile Video (55%, 75%) 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 Figure 1.
