Soutions for Broadcast and Production Loudness Measurement

Loudness Anaysis Loudness Anaysis and Handing in TV and Radio Broadcast A reiabe and standardized method for evauating program oudness today is essentia in radio and TV production and broadcast in order to avoid abrupt voume eve changes between different program types and channes. The need to compensate for this by permanenty adapting istening eves is sti one of the major compaints that broadcasters receive from their audience. These days, broadcasting and practicay the entire goba mutimedia industry have the opportunity to eiminate the notorious probem of inconsistent oudness. To achieve this, the need for oudness anaysis in a steps of the production and distribution chain is very obvious. The current recommendations of ITU (BS.1770-2 and BS.1771), ATSC (A/5), ARIB, and EBU (R12) provide binding standards for comparing oudness measurements and enabing a goba exchange of programs on the basis of unified evauation criteria. As an exampe, a ive broadcast from a sports event in surround sound wi need short time anaysis of oudness in rea time to be abe to react fast whereas a ong term ogging of oudness history is needed for distribution at the broadcasting centre. In ong term measurements, specia care shoud be taken to detect moduation breaks so that they don t ater the resuts unintentionay. An important part of these recommendations is the consideration that it is essentia to adapt the time constant of the oudness measurement to the appication. The evauation of frequency, measuring of individua channes with short integration time period (production), signa summation with average integration time period (production and broadcast) and ong time measuring (broadcast and monitoring) are a few of the requirements for oudness monitoring. To cater for this, EBU has estabished momentary (M), short-term (S) and integrated (I) integration times in R12, based on ITU-R BS.17702/1771. These and other parameters are part of the EBU Mode to provide comparabe oudness measurements. Today, the RTW instruments featured in this brochure wi provide efficient oudness measurement toos fuy compying to the EBU, ITU, ATSC and ARIB recommendations. On top of this, a products feature a specia Custom mode for users who want to set up their oudness measurement parameters individuay.
