Green Growth Knowledge Partnership: Promoting collaboration and coordinated research A presentation to the International G7 Workshop on Industrial Symbiosis Professor Paul Ekins OBE Professor of Resources and Environmental Policy Director, UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources University College London Member, Advisory Board, Green Growth Knowledge Partnership Birmingham City Council House October 29 th, 2015

UCL Public Policy The nature and purpose of a green economy Climate stability: the challenge of limiting global temperature increases Resource security: 9 billion people, 3 billion new middle class consumers, the nexus of food, water, energy (and biodiversity), plus critical raw materials Environmental quality: air, water, landscape, ecosystems Green economy requires greening of the whole economy, not focusing only on core green sectors Economic growth resulting from this process green growth will be sustainable, unlike brown growth, which will be increasingly undermined by climate and resource disruptions and instabilities

Projections from the 2011 UNEP Green Economy Report

Generating, Managing and Sharing Green Growth Knowledge www.greengrowthknowledge.org

Knowledge is Impact In order to mobilize the transition to a green economy, it is crucial that policymakers and practitioners have cutting-edge knowledge at their disposal. The Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) was established with the belief that knowledge leads to lasting impact and that investing in its generation and dissemination produces concrete results.

Mission The GGKP s mission is to: Identify major knowledge gaps in green growth theory and practice, then address those gaps by promoting collaboration and coordinated research; and Use world class knowledge management and communications tools to give practitioners and policymakers the policy analysis, guidance, information and data necessary to support a green economy transition.

A Global Partnership The Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) was founded by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Bank. The GGKP has since expanded to a global partnership of over 35 leading international organizations, research institutes, and think tanks, working to identify and address major knowledge gasp in green growth theory and practice through collaboration and coordinated research.

GGKP Strategy

Generating Knowledge The GGKP engages in a comprehensive collaborative process involving policymakers, practitioners and researchers in order to identify and address gaps in green growth knowledge that directly contribute to policy changes. Through the establishment of research committees on priority topics, the GGKP draws together experts to assess the state of knowledge and prioritise gaps.

Research Committees Trade and Competitiveness - Co-chairs: Ron Steenblik (OECD) and Marianne Fay (World Bank) Indicators and Metrics - Co-chairs: Ulf Narloch (World Bank) and Tomasz Kozluk (OECD) Technology and Innovation - Co-chairs: James Seong- Cheol Kang (GGGI) and Nick Johnstone (OECD) Fiscal Instruments - Co-chairs: Joy Kim (UNEP) and Ian Parry (IMF) Inclusiveness (new) - Co-chairs: tbc Participation includes: 28 experts from developing countries 65 experts from over 40 organisations

Managing Knowledge Through its web platform, www.greengrowthknowledge.org, the GGKP works to ensure that new learning and best practices can be easily exchanged across borders and disciplines. Key web platform features 1000 green growth publications available through a searchable database 193 country pages pulling together information on data, policies and projects 28 sector and theme pages

Sharing Knowledge Through digital and in-person activities, the GGKP facilitates the growth and engagement of a dynamic green growth community of practice, including practitioners, policy makers, researchers and the private sector. Key features Main knowledge sharing event is the GGKP s Annual Conference (last conference hosted by UNEP in January 2015) The Insights blog features weekly posts from leading experts The Knowledge Update newsletter provides monthly updates on newly launched green growth research Active social media presence (2000 Twitter followers, 500 LinkedIn group members)

G7 Alliance can both draw from and contribute to this important network and resource Email: contact@ggkp.org For more information: Web: greengrowthknowledge.org Twitter: @GGKPlatform
